David Garrard will stay one of the NFL's better quarterbacks, and his 2007 season was not a fluke.

Personally, I was getting sick and tired of the Jagaurs decision making at quarterback. Ever since the glory days of Mark Brunell ended with his departure to Washington, the Jags have had trouble at this position. BYRON LEFTWICH WAS NOT THE ANSWER. Byron was continually costing the Jags with his poor decision making and turtle-slow windup.

David Garrard, however, is the real deal. He makes great decisions, and never gets flustered. Thus is proven by his mere 2 interceptions during the entire 2007 season. That is incredible. Now that Garrard is finally the unquestioned leader and starting quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars, he has started to play like a champion. He will stay at the top of the second tier of quarterbacks in the NFL. The only QB's that I would take over him are P. Manning, Brady, and Favre.

Was Garrard's season a fluke? I honestly don't think that is the case here.

Is he a top 4 NFL QB going into next season? Far from it.

Look at where Garrard ranks in these categories-

18th-Passing yards
15th- Passing TD's
21st- Passes Completed
23rd- Passing Attempts/ Game

So what does this all mean?

Garrard is a system QB, he has not 1 but 2 great RB's on his team. His job is to go out and hand the ball off.

He throws the ball significantly less than other QB's in the NFL. And while they may not have the QB rating may be higher for Gerrard players like Palmer, Romo, Hasselbeck, McNabb, Cutler, Anderson, Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, and Brees mean more to their team.

Schwartz, if you read my statement, it says that Garrard is one of the better NFL quarterbacks, and that his 2007 season was not a fluke. This is the truth. I never said that he had to put up all-world numbers. Also, when I stated that he would be my 4th choice for quarterbacks, I was talking about to QB the Jaugars. As you said, the Jags don't need a guy to put up big numbers at the quarterback positiont. The Jags have one of the top 2 or 3 running games in the league, if not the best. Garrard does what he needs to do in order to be a good quarterback for his team: manage the game. If the Jags run the ball 45 times a game and only throw it 22-25, the quarterback's job description will read "do not turn the ball over." He doesn't do that. He protected the ball last year better than anyone in the league, and its proven by his 2 INT's all year long.

Also, you can't dog on Garrard for his performance in the playoff game against the Steelers. Although he did throw 2 INT's, it was his first playoff experience ever. Add to that the fact taht ti was in Pitt, in the cold, at night, he did a good job. He threw for a TD, ran for 60 yards, and had that cruical 4th down run.

Well,
I'm completely confused as to what you are trying to say here.

-You say the he is the 4th best QB in the NFL, but now you are saying that he is the 4th choice for the Jags? What?

-You keep bringing up that he only threw 2 picks, and while that is great and I'll work in sending him a cookie for that. A low amount of INT does not make you a great QB. As I stated earlier he threw the ball significantly less than most other QB's.

-Next you credit him for "managing" the game. Taking two steps and handing the ball off is hardly something to brag about.

-Then your other argument is that this season is no fluke, of course it isn't. He honestly hasn't done anything amazing, or anything that an above average QB can't do. By the time he throws the ball the defense is stacked in the box and he faces mostly man coverage. A QB's dream.

BOTTOM LINE, Garrard is an above average QB, that is about all. Don't group him with Manning, Brady, or Favre. And in that respect I don't think he is better than Palmer, Romo, Roethlisberger, Brees, Eli or McNabb for that matter.

What I am saying is that the Jags would obviously take Manning Brady or Favre ahead of anyone else. Every team in the NFL would take those guys over anyone else. Out of all the remaining QBs, the one that would work the best in the Jaguars system is Garrard. There is no arguing that. HE DOESNT TURN THE BALL OVER. You keep saying that he hasnt thrown the ball as much as other guys. while that is true, its not like hes only throwing it 3 times a game! he consistently throws the ball 18-25 times a game without throwing picks. what does the quarterback of the jacksonville jaguars need to do??? NOT THROW PICKS!!! that is my whole argument, that he is the best fit for the jaguars and that his 2007 season was not a fluke. he will lead this team to great things in the coming years, and it will be all because of his ability to take care of the football.

So you are saying that he would be your 4th choice if you could sign any player in the NFL to play for the Jags?

Even then I really don't think so. If you are using that angle, why on earth would you sign Favre? He would be retired in a couple of seasons and you will be without a QB. And at the same time you have Big Ben and Eli, whom are both VERY young QB's with Super Bowl rings. Or maybe Carson Palmer, who has maybe the best arm in the NFL, but is on a team that leans on him a little too much.

As I see it you did one of two things.

A- You picked Garrard as the 4th best QB and you are trying to cop out to this "best option for the Jags" thing.

B- You just like Garrard and want us to know that. I mean I am a HUGE Broncos fan (ask anyone on this site) and I LOVE Cutler as a QB, but he isn't a top QB in the NFL just yet.

As far as this TD goes, outside of saying "2 INT" about 20 times you really haven't sold me on Garrard as a top QB at all!

sweet some football talk, this should be fun

February 17, 2008  01:57 PM ET

I wanted this one! Oh well. No, Garrard is good but not top of the line good. You say 2 picks all season, well I say 2 picks in one game in the playoffs. Kinda shows how he does under pressure. Although I think Garrard is a good QB, he has only played ONE full season, we have no clue what this guy could do in the long run...

February 17, 2008  01:57 PM ET

By the way, doing your first TD on your favorite team = not a good idea...

February 17, 2008  02:08 PM ET

Not a fluke but he plays in a run first system. It's actually a run first, run second, and then pass system. He'll be good but not top 5 good.

Vote to BSchwartz

February 17, 2008  02:17 PM ET

Vote to Jags because while Garrad lacks in stats he still wins games and doesn't make stupid decesions in the pocket he can also move around while he isn't a top QB yet he has a lot of potential and he is in my top ten QBs.

February 17, 2008  02:19 PM ET

Tigers, did you read his argument at all? he said that only Favre, Peyton and Brady are better than Garrard. He says top 4, not top 10.

February 17, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Wow missed that part vote switched sorry Jags

February 17, 2008  02:28 PM ET

No vote yet. I'm going to wait and see how this one turns out.

February 17, 2008  02:29 PM ET

Garrard is a good solid QB but claiming him top 4 is insane top to would be more appropriate

February 17, 2008  02:29 PM ET

*ten instead of to

February 17, 2008  03:29 PM ET

i agree with Jag but BS has then better arguement so vote to him

David Garrard will stay one of the NFL's better quarterbacks--says hes good

He will stay at the top of the second tier of quarterbacks in the NFL---says hes second rate

contradicting ourselves abit are we

February 17, 2008  04:08 PM ET

I said that he is one of the NFL's BETTER QB's. BETTER, not best. This means that in no way am I comparing him to P. Manning, Brady, or Favre. Thus, he is at the top of the second teir.

So, no, I am not contradicting myself.

February 17, 2008  04:23 PM ET

You said the only QBs i'd take ahead of him are....Manning Brady and Favre which equals 4th best

He's at the top of second tier, but you'd only take Manning (Which one?), Brady and Favre over Garrard.

This is not necessarily a contradiction, but you're saying you'd bypass Palmer, Rothlisberger, Manning (whichever is the other one to you), McNabb, Brees, Romo, and a host of other players.

So in essence you're saying these players, many of whom have proven themselves in a much more convincing fashion than Garrard are still ranked below Garrard in the second tier?

Not likely. If Garrard can play 1 full season and prove he can repeat this past season's moderate success, then he could be considered upper second tier.

February 17, 2008  04:50 PM ET

vote to BS...gerrard is not a top 4 QB, and probably isn't top 10 QB

February 17, 2008  05:01 PM ET

JaxLax - you better watch yourself here. Ben Rothlisberger went 14-1 his first year, was incredible in three wins, on the road vs. AFC division winners on his way to the Superbowl in year two, and only after putting up big numbers in year 4 (after an injury plagued year 3) are people around here giving him any credit. He was always accused of being a "system QB" and a "game manager".

So, unless it's just a Steelers bashing thing, don't expect much support for a QB whose only put up decent numbers over 12 games.

PS - The above is ironic, as many of these same people were kissing the ground DA walked on for 2/3's of the season.

February 17, 2008  05:50 PM ET

who is DA

February 17, 2008  09:29 PM ET

HA! The guy passed like 5 times a game...
