Choose then argue in the 2nd and 3rd turns. My pick is Johan Santana.

How is Johan Santana overated.

My pick is Barry Zito

I say Johan is overrated. People talk about him like he's the best pitcher in baseball hands down. I mean last season the guy had a 15-13 record with 3.33 ERA and 235 k. That's not bad don't get me wrong but he doesn't deserve all this credit for that. I mean he's a good player but he did have a pretty bad season last year and all you people talk about him like he won the Cy Young award last year. Plus let's compare Zito and Santana.
Johan Santana
15-13
ERA:3.33
Barry Zito
16-10
ERA:3.83.
You can't say their not comparable. But meanwhile everyone talks about Johan like he's the best pitcher in the MLB while Zito is considered lousy. I would also like it if you people would let me state my arguement instead of voting within 2 seconds.

Johan Santana had an off year last year and still had the 13th best ERA in the leauge. Everyone says he is he best pitcher in the leauge because he is. I mean there is no one that has had the success he has had yearly. Look at his last four years, 04- 20-6 2.61 ERA, 05- 16-7 2.87 ERA, 06- 19-6 2.77 ERA, and 07 15-13 with 3.33 ERA. Those stats qualify him as the best pitcher in the game.

Zito is not considered lousy. He has the second biggest contract for a pitcher ever and doesn't have that good of stats. Before this year he was considered to be a top ten pitcher but never really lived up to that. His last four year stats 04- 11-11 4.48 ERA, 05- 14-13 3.86 ERA, 06- 16-10 3.83 ERA, and 07 11-13 with 4.53 ERA. He was considered to be a top ten pitcher before this year even with those stats and got the second biggest contract for a pitcher ever.

Okay. But you have to remember that this guy is coming of a season in which he had the most losses of his career (13) and the least amount of wins since 2003 (15). You can make the exuse that his team doesn't produce enough runs for him. But he does lead the major league in home runs allowed (33). So before you go blaming his team mabye you should look at some of his not so good stats. Plus he isn't even comfortable at his own field in Minnesota. His record at home is 5-9 with an ERA of 3.76. So all you people need to stop asuming he's going to win 20 games this year because the big city of NY might get to him. Think about it, if he puts up those kinds of numbers in Minnesota where he is loved a not a lot of pressure. Imagine in NY where if he has one bad game their's a riot. You have to question if he's mentally tough enough to play in a place like NY. You have to worry how he'll respond to all of this.

Forfeited Turn

So, he had one bad year last year, and everyone still says he's the best. Look at the other years, and PLEASE tell me he's overrated.

February 17, 2008  01:29 PM ET

Santana is billed as the top pitcher in the MLB right now, and he was just a smudge over .500 last year. he is quite overrated, and if he doesn't win the Cy Young 4 out of the next 5 years, and bring a world Series to the Mets he won't live up to this hype either.

February 17, 2008  01:30 PM ET

Johan had no run support last season with the Twins. He might not be spectacular this first year in the NL, but he's far from overrated.

February 17, 2008  01:31 PM ET

He was only a smudge over 500 because he got no run support. His ERA was still nasty and so was K's. In New York with offense like Mets expect multiple twenty win seasons

February 17, 2008  01:33 PM ET

15-13 with a 3.33 is far from "nasty"

February 17, 2008  01:37 PM ET

Willis

February 17, 2008  01:37 PM ET

I hope you joking about Santana "HAVING" to win 4 out of the next 5 Cy Youngs. Has that ever been done in baseball. I am quite positive that no pitcher has won 4 Cy Youngs in 5 seasons. So if I am right about this, you are saying Santana has to make history?

February 17, 2008  01:37 PM ET

He had the seventh lowest ERA and had more K's than all guys in front of him. Record is affected by poor offense not his talent

February 17, 2008  01:38 PM ET

The Braves Hudson matched Santana's 3.33, and Smoltz beat that with a 3.11.

Santana had the 13th lowest ERA, get your facts straight.

February 17, 2008  01:39 PM ET

To me it was between Zito and Willis but latey I've heard more people ssay Willis sucks than dominates. NY GIants, it has been done before

February 17, 2008  01:39 PM ET

I meant the AL which is harder

February 17, 2008  01:40 PM ET

Also RedSox,
Peavy had a 2.54 ERA and 240 K's
to
Santan's 3.33 ERA and 235 K's

So NO he didn't have more K's than everyone with a lower ERA than him.

STOP MAKING UP STATS!

February 17, 2008  01:42 PM ET

Since when is the AL harder?

Tell that to Zito, Pedro, and Mulder (all studs in the AL and expected to dominate the NL, NOT SO MUCH)

February 17, 2008  01:43 PM ET

Zito is a blip on the radar screen when compared to the dominance of Johan Santana. Santana will lead the New York Mets to the National League East title, and quite possibly further.

February 17, 2008  01:45 PM ET

Not to put in 6,000 comments but interesting Santana fact,

Santana's 33 HR's allowed was the most by any pitcher with an ERA under 4.90

This shows that Santana relied on his D quite a bit.

February 17, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Pedro did dominate the NL, and all the lowest ERA's came from NL last year. Three out of top 4 came from NL including Peavy who plays in worst hitting division, pitchers ballpark, and NL

Santana would have been the 3rd best Pitcher in Atlanta last season, so the Mets still don't have the best pitching.

now you say Zito and Santana aren't comparable?

Zito's final AL season
16-10 with a 3.83

Santana's final AL season
15-13 with a 3.33

They aren't that far apart.

February 17, 2008  01:48 PM ET

I've heard that before BS but he still had 3.33 ERA last year along with 2.61 in 04, 2.87 in 05, and 3.77 in 06.

February 17, 2008  01:48 PM ET

Make that a 2.77 ERA in 06
