All outfielders must play their natural position. Name your five starters (no order). Players in the first arguement, discussion in the 2nd and 3rd. You have to get a player from each team.

LF: Matt Holiday (COL)
CF: Aaron Rowand (SF)
RF: Matt Kemp (LAD)
1B: Todd Heltond (COL)
2B: Jeff Kent (LAD)
3B: Garrett Atkins (COL)
SS: Troy Tulowitzki(COL)
C: Russell Martin (LAD)

Pitchers:
B. Webb (ARI)
D. Haren (ARI)
B. Penny (LAD)
C. Young (SD)
J. Peavy (SD)

You have a pretty good starting team - i was hesitant to accept this td
i agree with all of your picks except RF, 1B, and SP
RF: Brian Giles
1B: Adrian Gonzalez
SP: Zito instead of Young

You'd really take Adrian Gonzalez over Todd Helton?!?!

Adrian Gonzalez:
.282 AVG, 30 HR, 100 RBI .347 OBP

Todd Helton:
.320 AVG, 17 HR, 91 RBI, .434 OBP

After reading Moneyball I find OBP to be the most important stat and he lead the NL in that category and also in walks.

I'm also wondering why you chose Giles over Kemp after comparing stats.

Brian Giles- .271 AVG, 13 HR, 51 RBIs, .361 OBP
Matt Kemp- .342 AVG, 10 HR, 42 RBIs, .373 OBP

I would sacrife 3 HRs and 9 RBIs for .07 more points in my batting average.

The only reason I chose Chris Young over Zito is that Young seems to be getting better, while Zito, pitching for the first time in the NL, had a huge set back. Chris Young's ERA has gone down each year while Zito's has been increasing. I would choose Oakland Zito but unfortunately Zito is now San Fransico Zito

While OBP is important, it doesnt guarantee runs. while it increases the chance that you will score, its not definite. However, HR and RBI guarantee run production. And the last time i checked, the more runs you score the more likely it is that you win. Gonzo had nearly twice as many HRs as helton, and 9 more RBI, Also, Helton is past his prime, and Gonzo is just hitting his. I think that Gonzo will have a much better season than Helton just because he is younger
Kemp had a better hitting season than Giles last year, but he is only in his second season. Its too early to declare him the best RF in the division after 150 games in his career which is why i didnt choose upton) While he most likely will be in the near future, its too early in his career to declare him the best in the division. Is Ryan Braun the best 3B in the central? He may turn out to be, but right now you cant give him that title, and the same applies to Kemp.
If you used stats for your arguments for the other two, i dont see how effective "he seems to be getting better" is. Zito is a CY YOUNG WINNER, while Young is still proving himself in the league. If "seems" is the basis of your argument, good luck.

Read a book once a while and you'll understand why OBP is better than HRs and RBIs. Right now im not going to give you a lesson on baseball theory...

It's so Ironic that you say Kemp can't start at right field because he has only two years experince but you don't realize ADRIAN GONZALEZ HAS ONLY PLAYED TWO COMPLETE SEASONS. Unless you wanna count that horrible season in 05 where he played 43 games and batted .227.

Let me take you to school, actually how bout math class.

Chris Young:
04- 4.71 era
05- 4.26 era
06- 3.46 era
07- 3.17 era

Notice how the numbers are getting smaller. ISNT MATH FUN?

Some pitchers just can't pitch in the NL, and after seeing Zito first year, he is most likely one of them.

Just because Gonzalez has only played two seasons doesnt mean he not the best in the division. Kemp has played only 150 games while Gonzalez has played almost 400. In the last 2 seasons, Gonzalez has 22 more HR, 10 more RBI, and 2 more 2B than Helton. This shows that Gonzalez not only "seems to be getting better" but actually is getting better. Helton's production is declining, while Gonzo's is increasing.

Let me teach you a little math lesson as well.
Zito = 1 Cy young
Young = 0 Cy young
1>0
Isnt math fun?

And if you want to say Young's stats are getting better and Zito's are worsening, the same could be said about Helton and Gonzalez.

Giles struck out 10% less of the time than Kemp did in 23 more games. Its hard to get on base if you strike out.

And Giles is more proven than Kemp is. Kemp and Young may be the best in a few years, but right now I have to go with the more proven players, Giles and Zito.

Is it ok if I only have one or two differences?

February 17, 2008  09:07 PM ET

i guess but thats kinda lame for everyone reading. why dont you just let someone else take it who will argue more of my picks.

February 17, 2008  09:17 PM ET

i was thinking that my competition would do like 3 or 4. If you chose one, we minds will be arguing which 2nd baseman is better or whatever. And two is basically the same thing and the first.

February 17, 2008  09:20 PM ET

What about if I do 3?

February 17, 2008  09:27 PM ET

Yes, do three...

You have my permission...

February 17, 2008  09:29 PM ET

lol He seemed annoyed that I wasn't doing enough so I asked.

February 17, 2008  09:56 PM ET

I'm not annoyed. Three would have been fine. I guess I never said that from the beginning so you could have done however but it isn't much fun unless you do a few more than one or two. Sorry.

February 17, 2008  09:59 PM ET

BRAD HAWPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

February 17, 2008  10:16 PM ET

that's who i was thinking too.

February 17, 2008  10:18 PM ET

WOW! Zito over Young?

February 17, 2008  10:18 PM ET

Maybe in overpaid salaries

February 17, 2008  10:24 PM ET

Orlando Hudson, I'd take his defense any day.

February 17, 2008  10:26 PM ET

Yeah I'm a d-back fan so it was hard for me to not include him. But I knew if i put him in there, Kent would be brought up, and I would lose from it.

February 17, 2008  10:29 PM ET

Yeah. I haven't been on here for very long, but sometimes people vote for some ridiculous picks.

February 17, 2008  10:32 PM ET

I had to learn that fast.

February 18, 2008  01:49 AM ET

KEMP!!!!!!!!!

February 18, 2008  01:51 AM ET

im diehard dodger blue, and i was shocked that jeff kent made it. is 2b really that shallow in the west?

February 18, 2008  02:21 AM ET

Justin Upton in Center.... on pure talent alone

February 18, 2008  02:23 AM ET

NVM, he played RF last year... Chris Young would have been a better pick than an aging rowand

February 18, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Maybe if CY could up his average. I think after this year, when his stats improve, I'll have starting. Ditto Upton on right.
