The Chicago Bears will not have a better record next season.

They have an extremely old offensive line that can't protect the qb or support the run (Fred Miller 35, Garza 28, Kreutz 30, Brown 36 is a free agent but his backup Metcalf is 30, Tait 33) They allowed 43 sacks last year, good enough for 24th place in the league and averaged a league low 3.1 yards a carry.

They have already proven Griese can't be their long term starter and Grossman will be leaving in FA. This means they must draft a QB to build for the future.

They just released Muhammed and Berrian is most likely going to hit the market also. That leaves davis, who has 468 yrds over 2 seasons, and Bradley who has 583 yrds over 3 seasons as the starters.

This team has far too many offensive needs to compete in this league and with teams like the Packers, Vikings, and Lions improving, wins will be hard to come by in this division.

Your right.....They do have more needs then most teams on the offensive side. They need a QB, RB, a few WR's and a OC.

They do play in the NFC North though.....The eratic Vikes and Lions have yet to prove to be formatable opponents for most teams. The bears could Easily have 4 win right here....Probably not, but 3.

We dont know if Brett is comming back or not....If he is not, then Rodgers is the guy in GB. I dont think that strikes fear in the hearts of thier opponents. The bears can take 1 from GB, 1 from Minny, 2 from DET and they have 4 wins...... half way to a 8-8 .......Which is a improvement from 7-9

Your speculating if that they could. Like I said before their offense is worse than last year with basically no proven QB, a bunch nobodies at wr, an underachiever and rb, and a bunch of senior citizens on the line. A good defense can't carry a horrible offense. Ask the Ravens. But at least the Ravens have a good RB and recievers I've heard of.

You can't rely on free agency alone to be a contender, just ask any Broncos fan. (Hey thats me!)

I don't know when the Bears play these teams, but I do know who they are. Here's the list:

Home - New Orleans, Detroit, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Philadelphia, Green Bay

Away- Det, GB, Minn, Atl, Carolina, Houston, Indy, St. Louis

Phi, Tenn, Jax, TB, GB, and Indy all have top twelve Ds so you can expect W's against the supposed newly reformed offense the Bears fans are suggesting.

>And why do you suppose since they swept the packers they'll get one win from them, but the Viks and Lions swept the bears last year and your guessing the bears will manage three wins from them. I'm sorry but i dont follow your logic.

Lets do this team by team in the NFC North......

1) Vikes - Peterson is the only threat on Offense. If the "pesky" 49ers can keep him under 20 yds rushing. A HEALTHY Bears D can do the same. Jackson is a non-threat.....They have no WR's

2) Lions - They started hot last year, and then returned to familar form. The biggest questions in todays NFL should not be about Pats and spygate...They should not be Parcell's new Dolphins......The biggest question in the NFL is, "How the Hell does Matt Millen still have a job?"

3) Packers - Grant looks legit.....The WR core looks legit.....But what will Brett do?? Can Rodgers do the same with the Packers that Brett did? Will this be like when Young took over for Montona?? I doubt it

This division is up for grabs. If the Bears D can keep them in games close all season, Hester could win them quite a few of em....

The Vikes do have a fantastic defense that will make any team one dimensional by stopping the run. BTW this is the same Vikes team that swept the Bears.

The Lions also swept the Bears and have a far better offense but a worse D. I'd say they might be evenly matched and split at worst.

Your just speculating whether or not Brett will come back. Even with Rodgers, they are still A FAR BETTER TEAM.

Like I said before the Bears will lose to Tampa Bay, Tenn, GB twice, Lions once, Vikes at least once, Indy, Phi, Jax, and maybe even houston.

All the teams on paper are superior to the Bears. The Bears are in a rebuilding stage for their offense and it will at least be one more season before they even make it to .500.

Chicago is rebuilding thier offense, your are correct once agian. But thier D will be back in full force. If the Bears can keep the games CLOSE, Hester and thier D may pull out a few wins. I dont think they are some jugarnot who will march down the field and score at will.

The Bears D and Devin Hester will win them at least 5 games. If thier offense can muster somthing from somwhere, 3 more wins is NOT a reach.

All they have to do is finish .500 and they will be better then last season. They won 7 games last year with NO QB and NO RB.....What makes you think they cant win 7 games agian without a QB and RB?

Last season was a fluke. They lost two defensive starters in the first game against san Diego alone, and it was all downhill from there. The Bears' special teams were ranked first in the NFL for the second straight season, expect that to continue to be a strong point. The Bears defense had it shaky with so many guys in and out of the lineup, but in weeks 10-17, they were third in the league in takeaways, with 20 during those weeks. The defense will be back if they stay healthy. Losing Moose hurts, but Berrian isn't out of Chicago yet, he could be back. (And I hope he is, I have a sweet away jersey of his.) They also have the cap room to address a few needs these season, such as Michael Turner at running back, or somebody like McNabb or Anderson at QB. They also have plenty of extra draft picks to make noise with trades too. They're not dead in the water yet.

ya wat he said

Their defense was banged up almost all of last season, but that really doesn't change the fact that "Bears Rookie QB" is better right now than anyone they have on that roster.

Speaking of that position, when was the last time the Bears got someone to consistently produce at that position? At what point do we take some of the blame off Grossman and start to wonder about that staff's ability to raise a signal-caller?

As for the WR position, while the Bears are notoriously frugal, I can't imagine they would leave that gaping of a hole at yet another offensive position by letting BOTH Moose and BB go. I would think they would have cut Moose because they were trying to work something out long-term for Berrian.

I dunno, though...it's up in the air.

They will because they play in NFC North and they will get some players in off season

February 18, 2008  07:56 PM ET

Hester at receiver too. Orton can play QB.

February 18, 2008  08:38 PM ET

Miller is gone. With both him and Muhammad cut, we freed up even more money for FAs and Draft picks. I think Angelo is going to pursue Turner, which would significantly improve the running game. But we still need better OTs.

We swept Green Bay last season. That was with our banged up line, and no hopes of a postseason berth. So we can win against good teams. We just need to be more consistent. That should come with a better O line, especially at the tackle position.

Free agency cant fix teams alone, ask any broncos fan.

February 18, 2008  10:04 PM ET

It depends on two things: Favre and Grossman. If both are still in the NFC North next year, the Bears will suck. If both are gone, the Bears will do better.

February 18, 2008  10:06 PM ET

Free Agency and the Draft can change a team's fortunes. Now it remains to be seen as to whether Angelo can do that for the Bears.

February 18, 2008  10:09 PM ET

i think they had 3 games with a field goal difference and 5 with 7 or less points ...last season...they were close..they beat themselves...they didn't get beat...

February 18, 2008  10:13 PM ET

Well with that mentality the Lions should have made the playoffs as they lost to NY and Dallas by I think 3pts.

February 18, 2008  10:14 PM ET

the d will keep them in games, but the offense (except for hester) will lose them.

February 18, 2008  10:18 PM ET

anyways...if you have heard Jerry Angelo's name before.... than you know what the problem is....
