The annals of the NBA are filled with unfullfilled potential.. However I think Kwame Brown, The 6 ft 11 in 270 lb forward/center who was the 1st overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards, and first number one to be selected straight out of high school, is one of its biggest underachievers ever and the current worst offender. Based off his potential, he should have been a dominant player.
Brown's years with the Wizards was characterized by a lack of maturity, laziness, and well-deserved mental beatdowns from Jordan. In his rookie year, Brown averaged 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game and was already predicted to be a draft bust (Ya think?).
Kwame was subsequently traded to the Lakers in 2005 and continued his underachieving ways. Even though he averaged about 9 points and 7 rebounds a game, his game never developed anywhere near the way a number one draft pick should. Typical Kwame performances include fumbling away passes like his hands have Crisco on them, looking clueless in the offense and missing dunks/layups whenever possible.
Laker fans had taken to booing him and are generally estatic Mitch Kupchak duped Memphis into taking him off their hands

Kwame will be tough to beat. However,
In this corner, we have the master of underachievers...at 7' 0", weighing in at 245 lbs, give it up for Darko..."for the love of God don't put him in the game"...Milicic!!!
(crowd goes wild)
For starters Darko out-sucks Kwame in every category:
ppg: 5.3 to Kwame's 7.6
rpg: 3.7 to Kwame's 5.7
Assists? Blocks? you name it-Kwame beats Darko everywhere.
2001 was NOT a deep draft, only 5 players of that draft have EVER been All-stars. 5! Kwame was the Number 1 by default--Tyson Chandler, Pao Gasol, and Eddy Curry were the sext 3 picks....meh.
Darko was number 2, and the 3 guys picked after Darko??? Carmello Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade. OUCH!
Darko was picked ahead of them based solely on his "potential." Those guys are All-Stars, while he's known as "The Human Victory Cigar."
Kwame got dumped by the team that drafted him faster, and is on his third team faster.
Kwame is lost and fumbles away passes on offense, but at least he's on the floor. Darko's part in the offense? Wave towel, warm chairs, sip gatorade, get dunked on in practice, repeat.

While Darko is a hard dud to beat the fact remains the point guards on his team pass him with the assurance that it will not be fumbled out of bounds on a regular basis. Darko, whiles his skill level is highly suspect at least has a clue of what is going on in the offense.
Kwame on the other hand must have AD because he is always where he is not supposed to be...One day I was watching the Lakers and I swear Luke Walton looked like he wanted to punch him for being out of positon. ..again.
The real sad part is that Kwame doesn't even start for the Grizzlies now, but Darko is...If you are behind Darko on the depth chart, you know you suck really, really bad..I guess the Memphis coaches saw his worth ethic and realized he is now the worse option than Darko.
That being said, Kwame was the number one pick...Usually in the draft, the number one pick is the one that is supposedly head and shoulders above everyone else...I am not sure what happened in 2001, but Kwame was the man. Kwame has not even reached closed to the level of marginal #1 performers like Joe Smith...No, no, Kwame is the buiggest under-achiever in the NBA today.

The ONLY reason Darko is playing more than Kwame is because Memphis is trying to motivate Kwame. They're saying:
"We're going to play you behind Darko until you give us a little more effort...yes Darko!...Stop laughing....We're serious...Stop it!"
Memphis' last game Darko started and got 13 minutes, Kwame got 20. Kwame is better, but they're just trying to send him a message by playing him behind a guy that is even more laughable than he is.
Usually the number 1 pick is better than the rest, but 2001 was the exception, no one really stood out. Also, the reason Darko was picked number 2 was some guy named "Lebron James." Ever hear of him? Kwame would have been number 2 if he was in the same draft as LeBron.
No one gets angry at Darko for sucking, anymore. It's expected. He's a lovable loser. The kind of guy you root for to score 10 points because it will completely demoralize the other team.
Darko is worse. The numbers are worse. He's been dumped faster. Can you even give me a comical nickname for Kwame?
Matrix said 02/19, 05:20 PM
Well ther Laker fans had a lot of nicknames for Kwame, most of which cannot be repeated here...No the only reason that Memphis traded for him is beyond my comprehension. Can you honestly say Kwame is better?
Darko actually has a nice little jump shot...Kwame has well, a thing where he clangs it off the side of the rim...
Darko makes his layups...Kwame, even though he is the biggest thing on the court, pump-fakes like ten times and then misses it...
Darko catches passes and holds onto rebounds...Kwame, fumbles it around before lsoing it out of bounds
Darko runs the floor and sets up good post position...Kwame meanders down the floor and has to be phsyically pushed into position by either Kobe or Derek Fisher
Darko remembers the plays from the time-out..Kwame comes out of the huddle with a befuddled look and goes back to KObe for a reexplanation of the play
Darko gets groans when he comes in the game...Kwame gets full scale "boos" that have to be defended by his teammates for his play
Darko has some talent...Kwame has some talent, but has no clue what to do with it..
Tell me who is the bigger underachiever?

WHAT??? Riddle me this, Matrix. If these are true, how in the heck does Kwame outscore AND out-rebound Darko? You make it sound like Darko is the second coming of Jordan. Insane.
Darko remembers plays because he only ever has to run them in practice. He's on the bench when Kwame is getting lost on the court. Kwame makes a bone headed play, the coach wants to bench him, sees Darko take off his warmups, then leaves Kwame in.
"Darko gets groans when he comes in the game"
Oh, it's far worse than that. He gets cheered! He is such a joke of an NBA player that it's funny that they actually play him. They cheer him because whenever he enters a game, it's because they've got it won and there's not enough time left for Darko to screw it up.
People are mad at Kwame because they still think he has a chance to be respectable.
People cheer Darko because he's a full blown hopeless cause. Like a midget trying to dunk. Wouldn't you cheer for that??
