Cleveland showed huge signs of upgrade last year in finishing 10-6, tied for first with the Steelers, but lost the tiebreaker. They are an extremely young team with a ton of talent. On offense, they have one of the best lines in the NFL, anchored by Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach. They have an explosive weapon on the outside in Braylon Edwards, and 2 always reliable pass-catchers in the middle of the field in Joe Jurevicious and Kellen Winslow. Jamal Lewis showed he still has a lot left in the tank after rushing for over 1,300 yards last year. Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn will benefit from these weapons, and both have the ability to use them to put a lot of points up for the Browns. The Browns showed a lot of improvement as the year went on on Defense. Young Corners Brandon McDonald (24 Tackles, 10 Pass Deflections, 2 INT's, only starting 2 games) and Eric Wright (76 Tackles, 11 Pass Deflections, 1 INT, 1 Sack) and safeties Sean Jones (96 Tackles, 5 INT's, 1 FF) and Brodney Pool (58 Tackles, 2 INT's.) They also have a very good young LB core. Look for the Browns, who always make a splash in FA to acquire a big name DL. the Browns will continue to improve and win the AFC North.

Although the Browns are an up and coming team, I would say they are still a few more years off before they can claim themselves as the top dog of the AFC North. I believe that distinction still falls on a better team called the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Although the Browns have a prolific offense, they are atrocious on the defensive side of the ball and unless a major improvement is implemented they will most likely yield the division crown to Mike Tomlin's squad.

The Browns still have question marks on the O side as far as FA, where they hope to sign Derek Anderson and Jamal Lewis before the Feb.28 deadline, but it is not guaranteed that it'll happen.

The Browns were ranked 30th in overall defense last year. They were 27th against the run, and 24th vs. the pass. You can have all the O you want, but without a great D, you can't expect to overtake a Steeler's team whose outstanding D was ranked #1 overall last season.

The Browns were 3-3 against the AFC North last season, while the Steelers were 5-1. You're looking at 3 losses vs. your own division again if you can't improve on your D. Tab in games with Indy, Dallas, and the Giants, and you're looking at 6 losses.

Yes, the total D stats look bad. But, if you look further into it, in the first 8 games of the year, the Browns gave up 20 pass TD's and and 29.8 points a game. In the final 8 games the Browns gave up only 9 pass TD's and 18.6 points a game. The Defense improved a lot last season, and will continue next season. Some reasons for this are their youth at DB and LB. Their weakness was D Line last year, and you can bet Phil Savage will address this in FA. He makes at least one big signing every year (LeCharles Bentley, Eric Steinbach, Jamal Lewis) and look for his big signing this year to be a D-Lineman. On offense, they have weapons everywhere, and just about any decent QB could run it successfully, like DA. ( I don't consider Frye a decent QB.) Quinn or Anderson will use Edwards, Lewis, Winslow, and Jurevicious to lead the O to at least the 27 ppg they had last year, if not more. Lewis is in negotiations with the Browns right now and has said he wants to come back. The offense will continue to be potent, the defense will continue to improve, and the Browns will improve on their 10-6 record a year ago and beat out the Steelers for the AFC North.

You stated the Browns D improved during the last half of the season, but what makes you believe that it'll continue towards this upcoming season? For all we know, they could relegate back to the horrible D that manifested itself during the early part of the year.

The Browns really need a lot of help on their defense, and I cannot emphasize that enough because to win the AFC North entails a complete team, both O and D. The Steelers fit the bill and present a much better team because they have a better balance on both sides of the ball.

The Steeler D can turn a a game around by virtue of terrific playmakers who can create turnovers and havoc to opposing teams. They have one of the stingiest defense in the league, as they don't allow an abundance of points( 16.8 pts. a game) unlike that of the Browns(23.9 pts a game).
Do you really expect a team like the Browns, who CAN'T stop the run or negate the pass to actually win the AFC N? I mean how often do you see a team who has finished near the bottom end of every defensive statistical category go on to win their own division. I am guessing not very many, if any at all.

Also, the Browns are 0-2 vs. the Steelers last year

They could go back to that, but I don't think they're going to improve, then all of a sudden go back to where they were. If they were an old team, maybe, but they aren't. In their secondary, they started 2 rookies, and no one had more than 4 years of NFL exp. At LB, they started Kamerion Wimbley and D'Qwell Jackson (2nd year for both). McGinest was hurt most of the year, and Peak filled in (first year w/Browns, 5th in the league). Davis was the only vet who played the entire year. They started to gel as the year went on, and imprvoed, and I don't see that improvement stopping, and see no reason why it would. The Browns D's turnaround started around the time Shaun Smith began starting instead of Ted Washington at DT. Shaun and Robaire Smith both became comfortable in their roles as 3-4 Linemen as the year went on, and started getting penetration and stopping the run. The D's stats look bad because of the terrible start, but they turned it on as the season went on. The Browns went 0-2 last year against pit, but Frye started one of those games, and the other was a 3 point game that could've gone either way. The Browns are a young, hungry team that will dethrone the Steelers next year

Ok, so far this TD has only involved the Steelers and Browns. But let me briefly touch base with the other 2 teams in our division in hopes of illustrating futher as to why defense is essential.
The Bengals, much like the Browns, are ineffective defensively as they rank near the bottom. Their once prolific O that turned mediocre last season couldn't score enough to compensate the generous pts. their D gave up. Result: 3rd place in the AFC North.
The Ravens. Their defense has deteriorated considerably last season compared to high caliber it once was. Mix in a struggling O, and your result is a last place finish.
Do you see a common problem here? It's plain and simple: bad defense.

Even if the Browns select quality players to boost their D from the draft, don't expect overnight success. It takes a few years for most def. draftees to orient themselves before they can get comfortably situated with the league.

Offensively, the gap between the Browns and Steelers are not that far apart unlike that of their defenses. They match the Browns very well scoring wise(24.6 to 25.1 pts. a game). Parker and Ward expect to be back full strenght, which should enhance their chances

The browns are not young on D or at RB........

I agree with Bandit, maybe Cleveland will be the top in a couple of years but they are either too young or too old at key positions and they need a couple more years to revamp that sorry D.

I don't believe in Derek Anderson. And 82.5 rating is ok, but not great. He needs to cut down on the 19 picks. Looking at the AFC North schedules, I think Pitt is going to be the team to beat.

February 20, 2008  12:37 PM ET

Cleveland needs a lot of help on D. Defense gets you the AFC North title, as has been proven by the Steelers and Ravens for most, not all, of this decade.

February 20, 2008  12:59 PM ET

No....Anderson will revert back to the 3rd string QB he is...and Brady will be in 35 more commercials (and will do nothing else)...but they will end up 8-8.
The only advantage they have over the Steelers is that Pittsburgh has by far the toughest schedule in the NFL next year. How'd that happen???

I have faith in clevelands offence since there 1 of my favorite teams and they have great weapons on offence.. but Bandit's right about there defence. it had got to pick up b4 anything happens as for as being the best in the north.

I would love to see Cleveland win a SB but...

Romeo could have spygate problems.

Anderson looked like he was 12 in the pro Bowl.

They folded at year end.

2009? Isn't that a bit far to be projecting? A lot will change in two years.

Reached space limit for last argument. But another thing to keep in mind is Special Teams. Can be an x-factor in many games. The Browns have one of the best Special Teams units in the league. Dawson, Cribbs, and Zastudil are some of the best at what they do, and this unit can decide many games.

February 20, 2008  10:22 PM ET

Steelers win North for the next 5 years at least.

February 21, 2008  12:16 AM ET

Shake, the Browns do have a terrific Special teams unit but you cannot always rely on them to win games. Also, it still does not compensate for their lackluster defense that will always give up points and leads to opposing teams. On that note, the Steelers special teams unit isn't chopped liver. Last year, the only aspect the Browns have an advantage is in their return game with Cribbs. The Steelers are better in kickoff avg, punt avg, and overall FG%.

Browns should have a great year with PIttsburg having such a hard schedule this year.
