they will not win because they are in a terrible conference and they have been strugling of late. Even though they have 6 wins vs the top 50 doesnt mean there the best team. there 6 wins vs the top 50 were early in the season. There last few games not includiing tulsa were very close. just look at the uab game they were down by 7 with less than 90 seconds to go and they would of lost. They almost lost to Utep who is only 15 and 9 and they play in a bad conference. I think that Memphis might be the best team and will go undefeated in the regular season but will lose in the elite 8 the final four or the national championship game because they will be used to playing bad schools

I realize that most people do not think Memphis will go all the way for the simple reason you mentioned: they play in a weak conference. Possibly they do. However, the UAB team will probably make the NCAA tournament. I also think Houston has a shot at making it. That's three teams from C-USA right there.

Here's my take on the UAB game: it's only going to make Memphis tougher to beat come tournament time. They'll be used to facing adversity and will be able to come back in a game and take the win.

Now, you mentioned how they ALMOST lost to UAB. You also talked about how they ALMOST lost to UTEP. The simple fact of it is that they won.

Finally, you said they have struggled as of late. They had one very close game. That's it. Here are their last five games they've played:

Beat Southern Methodist 77-48
Beat UCF 85-64
Beat Houston 68-59
Beat UAB 79-78
Beat Tulane 97-71

Fact of the matter is, Memphis has the talent, coaching, and depth to win the NCAA tournament this year. Teams don't even know which defense to play against their high-powered DDM offense. That's what makes this team so tough. You don't know how to play them.

26-0. Much more to come.

First of all I dont think that UAB is a tournament team because they are 0 and 2 vs the top 50 and here are some of there loses...
@ Marshall who is 12-11, they lost by 9 against Whichita State who is 10 and 17, South Florida by 10 who is 11-16 those are some bad loses. Any team that loses those type of games is not a tournament team. Plus they are 6-7 on either a neutral court or on the road which the whole NCAA tournament is neutral. Houston might make the tournament but if they do they will probably be a 10 or 11 seed who will lose in the first round anyways. When was the last time a team went undefeated and won the national championship in the 1970s. Heres a couple that can remind you of memphis. The Patriots they went undefeated until the big game. UNLV of 1990 undefeated until the big game. I Just dont see memphis going undefeated

UAB making or not making the tournament is irrelevant. The point is, they have a very good chance at making it. That means that C-USA has some talent and isn't so weak as everyone is claiming.

Where Houston will be in the tournament is also irrelevant. Besides, a #10 seed has beaten the #7 seed 38%of the time since 1985; a #11 seed has beaten the #6 seed 32% of the time. I'm sure they have a pretty good chance at getting past the first round.

I honestly don't care whether or not you SEE Memphis going undefeated, but it is more than possible for this team. It doesn't matter what UNLV and the Patriots, who play an entirely different sport, did when they were going undefeated into the big game.

Let's say Tennessee beats Memphis tonight. I don't think it will happen but if it does then the Tigers can get the monkey off their back. It could, quite possibly, be a good thing for them. They will start to play to win, instead of playing not to lose. I'm not saying they do that now, but it may put them more at ease if they have a loss to their record.

Your second argument told me nothing about why Memphis won't win it. You told me why they won't go undefeated. That's all.

Forfeited Turn

I guess I will spend this time explaining the loss to Tennessee. If you would like to read my thoughts on the game, you can check out my blogspot:

http://balltillifallblog.blogspot.com/

Basically, Memphis didn't execute. They didn't rebound. They didn't hustle. They didn't shoot free throws as "well" as they normally do. Yet, remarkably, they were still in the game with Tennessee down the stretch.

Mark my words. If Memphis plays up to their full potential, there isn't a team in the country that can stop them. The Tigers completely shut down the opposing team's best scorer (Chris Lofton) and held him to only 7 points on 2-11 shooting. He didn't make even one three pointer in the game.

When Memphis plays THEIR game, and not the other team's, they CANNOT be beat. That is why Memphis will win the National Championship. They don't have to worry about the perfect season anymore. This will get them focused and ready to win headed into March.

This game is a reminder that they aren't untouchable and that the players need to keep focused. I think that the loss was good for them. Good for Tennessee, but if these two teams meet in the NCAA tournament, Memphis will win.

I see how this will end up...

February 22, 2008  11:05 PM ET

regardless of who they beat march madness turns the favorites into the under dogs....

February 22, 2008  11:26 PM ET

no it doesn't, its just where a lot of underdogs win. The favorites are still the favorites, hence the title

Yea, G.O.A.T., teach this newbie a lesson.

Okay, I give the Who's Side of the Argument I'm On to Prince4MVP, and I give the Best Argument Award to G.O.A.T. Unfortunately for Prince, throwdowns are supposed to be voted on for arguments.

February 24, 2008  09:01 PM ET

Did you read my last argument, bleedblue?

February 25, 2008  12:14 AM ET

Memphis isnt going to play up to thier full potential for 6 games of the tournament

February 25, 2008  07:55 AM ET

And what makes you say that, Prince? Is there any info you have to back up this statement of yours?

February 25, 2008  03:55 PM ET

Hmm, tough call. I think Memphis WILL lose, however it is clear that G.O.A.T. put up a better argument. I don't buy the argument that Memphis will lose because they don't play quality opponents in their conference. Ask teams like Butler or Drake is if they are less legitimate because of their conference. They have played USC, Georgetown, Arizona, and Tennessee, all good teams. And no matter what conference you are in, winning as many as they did in a row is impressive.

If Memphis loses it will be because they are not as disciplined fundamentally as they should be. They shoot poorly from the 3 point line, are a bad free throw shooting team, and sometimes tend to get lazy in fundamentals like rebounding, etc. If they can fully utilize their dribble drive motion offense then they have a chance to beat anyone. If not, then a more fundamentally sound team, like Tennessee for example, will take them down.
