What should the Dolphins do with the first overall pick?

I think the ideal thing would for them to trade out of the first round for a package of players/mutiple draft picks. Even getting the best player in this draft would not make the Dolphins that much of a better team. They have far to many holes all around which obviously can't be filled with one player.

By trading out of the first they would most likely recieve 2-4 more picks and maybe some players for positions needed to be filled. Sure it might be the "attractive thing" to use your first pick on what may be the best player from this draft but in this case, it sure isn't the intelligent thing to do.

Obviously they wouldn't be a better team but you got to take the #1 pick when you have it. I see where your going with this but you have to take the 1st pick in the draft. When Parcells cut whatever it was 6 guys I think, including T. Green it's obvious he's doing a complete makeover and starting from scratch. If im Wayne Huizenga and the Miami Dolphins, Im thinking to myself that I have to get a great 1st round pick #1 overall that I will hopefully be a player to build around and maybe put the franchise tag on. Yeah trading out of the 1st round might get you a few good players but Parcells wants to build around a GREAT player. Miami's not going to trade out of the first round. The Dolphins are either going to get Matt Ryan or Chris Long. Miami needs an immediate player to build around I don't think trading out of a #1 pick is the way to go.

This draft is pretty weak on QBs. And Matt Ryan is not worth the first overall pick, not even close. If they feel that they want Ryan then they should TRADE the first overall pick down, to say 7 or 8, where he is worth more. Then they can get a free third or forth rounder or maybe even a player to pick the same player they could have at the one.

If they end up using the first overall pick on a player, it will take 2 or 3 more seasons to build a solid team around him. If you trade for a bundle, then it will only speed up the grueling rebuilding process.

"I think the ideal thing would for them to trade out of the first round for a package of players/mutiple draft picks."

Regardless if you get a 7th or 8th pick in the 1st round or get a multiple draft picks for Miami it's still going to take them more than 2-3 seasons to get to where they want to be and that's competing with New England. This is a very weak year for QB's but I think you have to get an immediate impact player that you build around. Matt Ryan may not be worth the first overally pick but if your going to start somewhere you have to start at either QB or RB or DE or LB.

Im just wondering whats the point of quoting that? Obviously your saying they should draft. im saying they should trade. Isnt that a form of trading?

When rebuilding in the NFL the key is speed. By not trading it will only extend the process while trading out will make them better sooner. This will allow them to become a more appealing place for free agents. If they use the pick, we can all agree that the rebuilding process will take longer. And no free agent wants to come to a long rebuilding phase unless they severly overpay them.

Sure in your scenaro you might a get one great player that could end up being one of the best down the road, but in mine they get many good or above average players which will allow them to win sooner, which will make more free agents want to sign with them for cheaper, which will make them a contender more immeadiately.

You can't say that Miami would be a more appealing place for a Free Agent man come on. We live in a sports world now where money is the ONLY thing that matters, not the team??? If your going to buy into the fact that all players are TEAM oriented go right ahead. You'll see that maybe 10% of all pro players might be but the rest aren't even close. Miami has been through more coaches it seems like in the last few years than any other place in the NFL. How is that appealing for a free agent knowing that the coaching staff over the years hasn't done anything worthwhile?? Front Office was a mess until Bill came in but one man can't do it all. But if im a free agent Miami is the LAST place id go regardless of how you draft. As a FA you look at 3 things. 1. Money 2. Facilities 3. Talent, Where is Miami in all that. Last, last, and last. Drafting alot of good players doesn't help you in every perfect world. Getting one great player ALMOST always has a good effect in the end. In the situation that the Dolphins are in getting a few good players won't help them IMMEDIANTLY!!!! They need ONE impact player not a few good one's here and there. That's what the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds are for.

They will trade out of the pick if at all possible otherwise they will take Howies kid.

February 24, 2008  01:12 AM ET

They won't trade out. C. Long is a beast and Parcell's LOVES amazing DE's (e.g. DeMarcus Ware)

February 24, 2008  01:13 AM ET

I should have said this before i made my second arguement but good luck.

February 24, 2008  01:13 AM ET

Bill Parcells also loves building teams into contenders, and the best way to do that is trade out.

"Parcell's LOVES amazing DE's (e.g. DeMarcus Ware)"

Parcells converted Ware to a linebacker...

February 24, 2008  01:14 AM ET

Trading out would hurt them more than help I think. They HAVE to get an immediate impact player whether its a QB to build around or a solid defensive player to build around. Miami is going to be bad for awhile.

February 24, 2008  01:15 AM ET

Correctomundo. To fit in his 3-4.

February 24, 2008  01:15 AM ET

Regardless fool he's a player that you build a defense around.

February 24, 2008  01:18 AM ET

But instead of building around one player, how bout getting mutiple players to form an actually "solid" team.

February 24, 2008  01:21 AM ET

"Miami is going to be bad for awhile."

Dallas had been 5-11 for three consecutive years before Bill took over. His first year they went 9-7 and made the playoffs with Quincy freakin' Carter under center. He didn't manage that by overpaying a #1 overall pick, he did it by completely overhauling the roster.

I'll say again, if it's at all possible, Parcells will DEFINITELY trade out of the 1st pick. He can easily slide back several slots, still get an impact player, and pick up more draft picks to continue the process. You are correct that if he can't trade down, he'll take Long, but that's not his first choice nor should it be.

February 24, 2008  01:24 AM ET

"This is a very weak year for QB's"

So what? Miami isn't looking for a rookie QB, anyhow. And you NEVER build around a RB, that's insane.

February 24, 2008  01:25 AM ET

"Regardless fool he's a player that you build a defense around."

You build a defense around an OLB? Interesting.

It's the 1st pick in the draft brotha. He could make a deal to get multiple 2nd round picks in the 2nd round through a trade with a team for a player currently on the Dolphins or even make a trade like the Giants and Chargers did with the whole Manning Rivers deal a few years back for a player that say either the Chiefs, Rams, Falcons, or Jets get. Now I could see him taking the 1st pick and then making a trade with one of the other top 10 pick teams for a deal but there are so many options out there that neither one of them is going to change the outcome of the Dolphins regardless of whether you take the 1st pick or trade out. Regardless, the Dolphins are still going to be in the rebuilding process for a few years to come.

February 24, 2008  01:30 AM ET

That might of sounded like it was against my whole argument but it wasn't. I'll say again so no one gets confused.... Parcells and the Dolphins will not trade out of the 1st pick. Im throwing other scenarios out there.

February 24, 2008  01:31 AM ET

Matt Ryan..........?

No, not worth it..

February 24, 2008  01:32 AM ET

ditto

February 24, 2008  01:33 AM ET

I would normally think you built a defense around a Defensive Lineman...

February 24, 2008  01:33 AM ET

Guys they need help at every position. They were at the bottom in nearly every category if not all of them. They need help at EVERY position whether its WR, QB, RB, OL or defense as a whole. Im saying Matt Ryan is a starting point but obviously I agree that there are other players more worthy of taking as a 1st pick. That was just a possible route they could go.

February 24, 2008  01:34 AM ET

"Obviously they wouldn't be a better team but you got to take the #1 pick when you have it."

When you get rid of your 12 Year Vet, and have not a lot, there are too many holes to fill by getting one player...

"Guys they need help at every position. They were at the bottom in nearly every category if not all of them."

Their Secondary is ranked 4th, and when they have that many problems, they have to trade down for more young talent...
