I say that the Red Sox will finish 99-63 to the Yanks 90-72 which is a 9 more wins difference.

That is too much.

2007 Sox won the division by 2 games.
2006, Yanks by 11 games.
2005, tied.
2004, Yanks by three
2003, Yanks by 6.
2002, Yanks by 10.5
2001, Yanks by 13.5

The Yankees were less talented than the Sox last year. But they nearly took the division away late in the season. I am not a Yankee fan but with they didn't really lose a whole lot this offseason. A whole season of Joba and Hughs makes them stronger.

The Red Sox should have run away with the division last year and yet just couldn't. It will be another close year. The last time the Red Sox won the division(tied with the Yanks), they totally fell apart the next year(2006). It is very likely that the Red Sox will NOT win 9 more games than the Yanks. I say less than 9 games. And maybe, the Yanks will win the division.

Joba will be in the bullpen once again and can't gain them too many wins there and Hughes had a 4.35 ERA last year so he doesn't either. The Red Sox will get full years of Lester, Clay, Ellsbury, and a confident Dustin. Last year the Red Sox won it even though Ortiz had 17 less Hr then he did in 06 and Manny had his worst year ever. Do you really expect Ortiz not to get 40 HR again, Manny getting only 20 in a contact year, Drew batting .267 with 8HR, and Lugo batting .237 this year.

The Red Sox will be good, i am not saying that they won't.

But the Yanks are going to win a lot of games too. It's hard to repeat great years.
The Tigers went to the series and didn't make the playoffs the next year. The Red Sox beat the cardinals in the Series and didn't make the playoffs the next year. Not because they didn't have talent, but they just didn't play as well. You can't guarentee that just because the Red Sox won the series they will win 99 games the next year. It just doesn't happen very often.

Hughs is going to be good. Wang had an off year. The Yanks other young pitchers are going to contribute. The Red Sox WILL NOT run away with the division. Shill and Wakefield are old. Matsusaka is not very dominating. That leaves only Beckett as the Sox great starter. The Sox have pieces, but not a real powerful rotation. Their hitters are good, but so are the Yanks. I say, close race.

if you hate the Yankees so much why are you giving them 90 wins? They have NO PITCHING at all. I really don't see this team breaking 80-85 wins, remember the A-Rod Rangers, all hitters, didn't work then won't work now.

February 25, 2008  10:43 AM ET

WAng, Hughs, Pettite, Kennedy, Mussina. That is better pitching than the Rangers ever had.

February 25, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Negative 17

February 25, 2008  10:51 AM ET

The Red Sox are unlikely to approach 100 wins. 100 wins has becomes an exceptional feat in recent years.

February 25, 2008  10:59 AM ET

BS, you're crazy if you see no pitching whatsoever. The bullpen is "eh" but the rotation has the potential to be unbelievable.

February 25, 2008  10:59 AM ET

i LOVE the know-nothings that continually claim the Yankees have no pitching. Fact, the Yankees have noone on Josh Beckett's level. Fact, Pettitte, Wang, Hughes are all better than anything the Sox put out on Day 2, including dice-K. You wanna play a numbers game? Look at dice-k's last year. You say Hughes wont get better and Joba being in the bullpen wont get them wins? Joba in the bullpen will win them more games than you can even comprehend. His record might not have double digit wins, but take a look at the sox when they had mike timlin closing games a few years ago. They blew about 20 games because of that bullpen, probably more. Get a clue, Yankee haters. Your not baseball fans your just crybaby haters.

February 25, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Wang- 19-7 with a 3.70
Hughs- 5-3 with a 4.46
Kennedy- Pitched in 3 games EVER
Pettite- 15-9 with a 4.05
Mussina- 11-10 5.15

Hardly a super star cast here Willis. Add to that the Offense of the Yankees is getting a little old as well and you have a solid 2nd place finish.

yankee haters are so ugly. your not baseball fans you just find joy in bashing a good team. jump off the badwagon

February 25, 2008  11:14 AM ET

We bash a team that is only as good as they are because they spend 20 million per on guys like Jason Giambi. If there was a salary cap in baseball, the Yankees would not have 26 World Series titles.

February 25, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Yankee Haters? CP3 #2 (there already is a CP3MVP on this site), get over yourself and your team. Just b/c someone doesn't think the Yankees have the best team in the world every year doesn't make them a "Yankee Hater", the truth is your team went out and took every team in the MLB's sluggers a few years back. They gave up almost all of thier young talent to get those guys and now they are getting older and worse every year.

February 25, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Hughes was injuried last year and Kennedy showed big potential. Wang will give you wins and Pettitte is Pettitte. A good 2nd half guy usually who is good in big games. Mussina is the weakest link. That is a solid group. It could be better but we'll see about that.

"Coletrain, see above, and stop drinking in the middle of the day."

Never! It helps.... :)

February 25, 2008  11:16 AM ET

But there isnt, the Yankees pay a luxury tax just like the Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, Angels and Cubs. What do the small market teams do with the money? Spend it on OTHER THINGS. Not the Yankees fault.

February 25, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Pettite has lost it, ERA have been above 4 the past 2 years.

Mussina is well Pettite in about 2 years, a round of BP for the other team.

Wang is a solid #2 or #3 starter, NOT AN ACE

Kennedy pitched in 3 GAMES! and no way he showed the potential of Buchholtz.

February 25, 2008  11:29 AM ET

I didn't bring up Buchholtz nor did I say Wang was an ace.

Kennedy showed he has good stuff and Hughes has alot of potential. I'm not saying this is the best rotation in baseball, not even in the AL. But I think they will be a solid group.

I see them winning the WC, not division.

February 25, 2008  11:32 AM ET

And Pettitte had a 4.05 ERA last year. Not an ERA of a pitcher that lost it.

February 25, 2008  11:33 AM ET

see now that I won't really argue. But to say that they have the potential to be amazing, eh, not so much.

What I honestly see is the Red Sox jumping out to a HUGE lead in the AL East just like last year, and by the All Star break making a move for an Ace on a team that is having a firesale.

That guy brings new life to the team, Jaba moves to the starting rotation (then back to the pen) and the Yankees battle out for a wild card spot for the rest of the season. (And if you ask me, the Wild Card will come from the Central)

February 25, 2008  11:34 AM ET

And Pettitte had a 4.05 ERA last year. Not an ERA of a pitcher that lost it.

Not an ERA of a pitcher that has it either.

February 25, 2008  11:34 AM ET
