Even as bad as they were this year, the Miami Heat will be a good team next year and return to the playoffs.

I can never remember a team in the NBA falling from elite status as quickly as the Heat did. Just two years ago, they made an amazing run through the postseason and won their first title in franchise history. At 10-44 at this point, the Heat have the worst record in the league. Their defense has been a weak point this year, and losing Shaquille O'neal won't help the interior defense.

Having said this, they have the potential to very quickly return to the playoffs and become an above average team again. If you look at their projected 08 roster, they will start Dwyane Wade, Shawn Marion, and most likely if he comes out this year, Kansas State's Michael Beasley. The Heat have a great chance of winning the lottery this year and getting the #1pick. Beasley is playing out of this world for K-State this year, and will win player of the year as a freshman. With two all-stars and a number one pick that is going to be "the real deal," the Heat will be the most improved team next year. Not to mention that they have a Hall-of-Fame coach and a very supportive fan base that fills the arena every night. I'm not predicting that the Heat will win the NBA Finals, but they will be a goo

You're right it was like enron's stock. It was up,up,up,and then straight down.

An NBA team just doesn't go from the worst record in the league to a playoff team unless the mack absolutely huge free agents pick ups or makes a major trade.Basically this can't be done in a year. And how coul they afford it with Shawn Marion and D-Wade's contracts?

Michael Beasly is a great player in college but he won't be what it takes to make a 10-44 team a playoff team.He isn't a miracle man.You can expect him to become a good or great player but don't think he would lead them to the playoffs in his first year. That is too much to ask of souch a young and inexperienced player. And it's still a "chance" of winning the lottery. The Celtics had the worst record and ended up sliding down in the lottery.

Marion just won't gell with D-Wade enough for those to stars to lead them to the playoffs right away.

This team is made up of very brittle bones and muscles. They are way to old and an influx of young talent seems to be inevidable. But of course you can't expect the youngsters to be able to lead the heat to become a great team for a few years.

Miami will not make the playoffs next year.

Remember, in order to be a playoff team in the EAST, you don't have to be an amazing team. This team will be good next year, a lot better than they were this year. And your argument saying that a young player cannot lead a team to the playoffs is flawed. This is proven by the exact team that we are talking about. The Miami Heat won the playoffs last a couple years ago with one experienced player and a young superstar, Shaq and D-Wade. This time around, Wade can be the experienced veteran leader with guys like Beasely, Cook, and Ricky Davis playing the roles of talented youngsters.

Like I said, in the East, you don't need to be an amazing team to make it to the playoffs. You just simply have to be good enough, and the Heat will be just that next year. They even have a big man with raw talent in former Kansas star Wayne Simien. Simien simply hasn't had enough playing time for the heat due to Shaq being their dominant center. This team has potential to have a good season next year, and make it back to the playoffs.

But to be a playoff team in the east you must at least have somewhat of a good team, and Miami isn't that type a team right now. With all of the old, worn down players, they will be on the hunt for younger guys. But you can't expect them to sign a team of guys that will take them to the post-season,unity must occur within the team. How do you know they will be a lot better than this year?I mean, they aren't getting any younger, they don't have much talent, just old, travled vets who are on the downside of their career.

And once again,a lot of teams with the worst record don't win the lottery. It is only a slight chance.

I didn't really say that a young player couldn't lead his team to the playoffs. You said that Beasly would make a difference and would help send them to the playoffs, while one:We don't even know if he'll be on the team yet and two:He most likely won't make a huge impact and be the savior of the franchise next year.I know D-Wade was young but he wasn't a rookie.

Ricky Davis hasn't exactly blown teams away, and Cook and Simien are not nearly even close to their potential, give them 3-4 years and I'll listen. And Simien may have raw talent but he won't fill Shaq's shoes now

You need to have somewhat of a good team to be in the playoffs in the east? What do you consider to be "somewhat of a good team?" As I can see it right now, the 25-32 Sixers would be in the playoffs if it started today, and the 19-37 Bobcats are only 6 games back of them!!! For a team that is 19-37 to still be very much alive in the playoff hunt, that means that you do not have to be a great team to make it to the playoffs. All the Heat have to do next year is go .500, maybe even a little bit worse, and it would be a great improvement from last year, and they would make the playoffs.

You can't tell me that a team with Dwayne Wade (one of the best players in the league), Shawn Marion (a proven all-star in the league), Beasely/Hansbrough/another star from college this year, and a Hall of Fame coach that is one of the best of all time can't make the playoffs in the East.

Have you forgotten that Wade is coming off of two serious injuries heading into this year? Also, a proven shut down interior man like Alonzo Mourning will be back next year, so if the Heat could just get someone to play the post on offense, they will be a strong team. Don't forget about Jason Williams too.

But what is different next year other than one young player drafted this year?So draft Beasly and he automatically leads the to the playoffs?I don't think so.And it would be a GREAT improvement. There is nothing that makes them a good team next year.Beasly, and Hansbrough(who excells by hustle and size difference)won't make much a splash in the NBA.

Yes,I can tell you that they WON'T make the playoffs in the east. They have players right now who are better than a rookie will be next year so how much of a difference will any of these rookies make. You know the Heat were in a 11 game losing streak, with Marion,D-Wade,and a hall of fame coach. One rookie will completly change their outlook?

And Zo is getting so old and worn down, the heat haven't been able to trust him to be healthy. He had a pretty severe injury and he may not be back PERIOD.Wooohooo,Jason Williams has really led the heat.

anyway, better arguments so far by Cincy.

Marion is a free agent and the team with the worst record has a 25% chance of getting the number 1 overall pick.

Next.

They'll be in the playoffs next year. Vote goes <-------

February 27, 2008  12:09 PM ET

If the Heat was able to move the contract of J. Will and Ricky Davis for another contributor then I would say the Heat would be in the playoffs next year. They messed up by not making a trade with those two expiring contracts.

and LOL at Frank

February 27, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Well it is a matter of Beasley deciding to go into the draft...which he probably will...and it is also a matter of "chance" like Cincy said.. So that part of the argument is kind of weak, but you bringing up the **** eastern conference makes your argument somewhat better. We need to see what happens in the off season to vote on this. The Heat can very well make the playoffs next year though. I need to see the rest of this debate.

Thanks to Stephen Clobert and Jon Stewart who can actually make politics interesting,(and by interesting I mean funny).

February 27, 2008  03:15 PM ET

Its very possible. If they get the first pick and it works out they could be like the Spurs when they drafted Duncan. Not saying its going to have the same results but this is basketball and it could happen.

February 27, 2008  03:50 PM ET

They play in the east they probably will be in the playoffs next year as 7 or 8 seed it won't take that much improving upon their team. Maybe just one more solid player to go with Marion and Wade than they have it made.

February 27, 2008  04:19 PM ET

minnesota made a killing trading blount and davis for miamis first round draft pick

February 27, 2008  04:24 PM ET

i agree the heat might make the playoffs, but i highly doubt they will be good. And just cause they have the worst record doesn't mean theyr'e going to get the #1 pick. In the nBA there is this stupid thing called a lottery pick where even a good team can get the first pick in the draft. Therefore I believe that in the end they won't end up with anyone near the calliber of a Michael Beasley but might get a tyler hansborough who is too short to play in the NBA in my opinion.

Good td Jaxlax.

February 27, 2008  08:58 PM ET

ice water in hell? not possible....

February 27, 2008  09:23 PM ET

its not hard to make the playoffs in the east,i mean half the teams that get in play under.500 ball,so the heat defiently have a great shot with wade whoever they draft, and maby even marion

February 27, 2008  10:37 PM ET

yeah you too, good TD, my argument is just that they will make the playoffs, not that hard to do in the EAST!

February 28, 2008  03:38 PM ET

Ok,well I don't think there will.I forgot to mention some of the rising teams in the east.
