Im new to being a basketball fan. My Vols have recently got me into basketball (past 2 seasons). Im not complaining b/c the loss. Im not blaming the officials anymore for the loss to Vandy than I am the win over Memphis.
This game is completely dictated by the officials. The pace, scoring, and defense all three. The players dont determine the winner the officials do. Every play the ball is within 6 feet of the goal can be a foul and more often than not its called. I have heard people talk that in Jordans day he got away with murder, and when he drove it was more likely to be called. I can see that this was most likely completely true b/c thats the way the game is set up. I cant appreciate a game where 1 man, not on either team can dictate the outcome.
What is and is not a foul needs to be reviewed.
For example, the coaches box. Is it a foul or not? Both coaches the entire game, every game i watch are out of the box the entire time yelling up and down the floor. Then when the official decides its a Tech. Its unexplainable to have an official with that power of the game.
Give me the whistle. Give me the winner, and the spread (within 5) and I can make it happen.

Basketball is not stupid. I don't know everything about basketball but i do know that.
The refs really do try to make the right call. They have people checking them on their calls. If you say you are new to basketball, why are you so quick to comdemn that which you cannot understand?
Your td keeps getting deleted because it is not a td. It is not a place to have basketball explained to you. GO to the library, and get a book on basketball. Learn the rules. Actually try to understand it by reading words.

I understand every rule. I understand that everything that is a penalty is only a penalty when the official wants it to be.
By new I mean new as a fan. New as one who wants 1 team to win over the other. I have watched the NBA playoffs and March Madness for the last 4 years. Really gotten into it the last 2 years as a Vol fan.
Basketball is stupid because the players dont determine who wins. The official does. Who determines who the official has win? Could be ESPN, could be Vegas, could be the officials own gambling habits. Most officials are honest im sure, but you cant tell that MANY arent. The game is set up "stupidly" to allow for that compromised official to determine the outcome.
The proof is here: Tim Donagy: any official can do this
This isnt necessarily about then intentionally cheating either. However, on the floor they have to lean a certain way, like a certain player or coach, or not. This is what makes the game "stupid".
The outcome is compromised, and we have no way of ever knowing whether any given game was fair or not.
Checking on the calls? Every play is a foul. How can you "check" the calls.
Cain-Willis. In & Out... said 02/27, 10:28 AM
Frank, surely you could have come up with a better words than "stupid" for the title.
Pointless, meaningless, frustrating, annoying, exciting, arousing, cheating..... "stupid" doesn't exactly mean a whole lot to people outside the trailer park.
Basketball like any other sport, is impossible to have 100% perfection 100% of the time. But the refs do as good a job as is possible for humans. To err is human. To be perfect is to be god.
Usually, the players determine who wins. Don't tell me the Knicks just get the bad officials every time...

My point has been made. Every comment agrees with me (except Garet but thats a technicality). Of Course the voting goes to you. You have yet to make an argument against me. Everything I have said is true and undisputable.
Cain-Willis. In & Out... said 02/27, 10:39 AM
People agree with you in little bits. Some of what you say has a small degree of truth to it. But your entire opinion of basketball is wrong. Way wrong.
No sport is perfect in every aspect. There is always something that needs improved. There will always be people who don't understand things.
Everything you said is true? No. You said players don't determine a winner. So the spurs and lakers in years past were just the "chosen ones"? They didn't have any good players? No way dude, you're lost.....

Report Offensive CommentI didnt say he did get away wiht murder garet, i said people say he did, and i see how that could be completely true, its officials discretion, if its good for the leagues popularity for jordan to be the hero i can definately see the league making the officials aware of it

Report Offensive CommentOr just watch tapes of the finals between Miami and Dallas were D. Wade got every call and went to the free throw line @ least 30 times a game. Just ridiculous.
FaVre <3's Mr. Rodgers | 02/27/08, 10:28 AM
Report Offensive CommentEver since Dwyane Wade beat Dallas from the free throw line in the '06 Finals, I've really started to hate the officiating in the NBA. Then the whole Donaghy scandal really blew the doors off the whole thing for me. The main issue is that the refs have too much power to decide the outcome of games, but they have to enforce the rules. Two sides of the same b.s. coin really...
Rolo Tony Brown Town | 02/27/08, 10:28 AM
Report Offensive CommentHere are the stats on those finals (I pulled these from my comments on another TD about which sport has the worst officiating):
NBA... until they fix the Dwyane Wade rule (the one where if he touches the ball a foul goes against the other team to the tune of 97 Free throw attempts in the NBA Finals, including 73 in the final four games of those '06 NBA finals)
BTW he ONLY capitalized on 75 of those attempts, amounting to roughly 12.5 free points per game (the final four games average to 14.5 free points per game)
Rolo Tony Brown Town | 02/27/08, 10:30 AM
Report Offensive Commenti didnt say it was true either way garet, i said i can see how that could happen very easily with no proof, i said the game is set up to allow for that sort of thing, making it stupid
heres the idea behind it, if the nba decides its good for the league for kobe to be in the finals then they can put him there
Frank Pentangelli is READY | 02/27/08, 10:30 AM
Report Offensive CommentAnd I know everyone will cry homer here, but the Dallas Mavericks got robbed that year. Sure, Dallas did get outplayed in TWO of the games, but they got robbed in two of the others with Dwyane's charity shots. Damn Bennet Salvatore.
Rolo Tony Brown Town | 02/27/08, 10:33 AM
Report Offensive CommentThat was a boring finals in my eyes with D Wade and the Mavs, they just gave up. But yeah i can see the free throw thing. But i dont believe its inconsistent. There is not a problem with basketball, its just because there are only 10 people on the floor and fans think they understand the game better then the refs. Both teams get robbed on occasion. I could bring up the push MJ did on Bryon Russel in the 98 finals. But it doesnt change a thing.
Joe Dew | 02/27/08, 10:36 AM
Report Offensive Commentdo you think that the heat title had anything to do with the nba wanting shaq in there? look out this year, its probably coming again
Frank Pentangelli is READY | 02/27/08, 10:43 AM
Report Offensive CommentI think it also had something to do with trying to find a new MJ and they decided since D Wade made it before LeBron, that they would bestow him with that honor. He became Mr. Untouchable and in some instances just looking at him warranted a foul. I think after last year's ref scandal we will see less and less of this as the league tries to repair its image.
