The Best player would have to be wilt chamberlain. He set the record for the most points in a game.
The game of basketball actually adapted to him because of his dominance. See invention of the
three-second rule after he dropped 100. What other player can say that?

But they didn't outlaw the dunk because of Chamberlain, that destinction goes to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,birth name Lew Alcindor(for those who don't know changed name because of muslim faith).

Kareem has accomplished arguably more than any player in the history of the NBA,(info from wikipedia):

3rd all time in blocks
1st all time in points(38387)
6 NBA championships(Chamberlain played on losing or average teams through his career until he reached LA near the end of his career and played with Jerry West and Elgin Baylor)
Played from 1969 to 1989,(Bucks 69-75,Lakers 75-89)
stal line for his career,he averaged: 24.6 ppg,11.2 rpg,3.6 apg(excellent for a big man,and Wilt developed a passing game near the end of his career)and 2.6 bpg,all while playing consistent, strong ball, throught his career,he still was a force even when his career winded down.
He shot free throws excellent for a big man(72.1)
He has played more more minutes than anyone has ever played and has played more playoff games(237 than any other player)

So yes my pick is Kareem Abdul-Jabar

Ahhh i forgot about kareem.

Good luck blazer boy.

I could go with Kareem or Bill Russell.

February 27, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Bill is the way to go.

Kareem>Russell. Kareem was dominant on both ends of the floor and had incredible longevity.

February 27, 2008  11:56 AM ET

Arguments are better by Cincy so far. Kareem was a beast.

February 27, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Yinka Dare. Easy.

February 27, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Good choices both of you. But they played in a time with few, in any, other dominant players like themselves. They were ahead of their time, much like Jim Brown was to football.

I'll say Tim Duncan. Yes, I know he's still playing, and yes, I'm a Spurs fan. But if he played back then, he'd have more rings than Bill Russell. He's pretty much unstoppable now. Imagine back then with a whole bunch of little 6'2" people running around.

February 27, 2008  12:09 PM ET

Duncan?Really?Interesting.

February 27, 2008  12:14 PM ET

Better arguments by Cincy so far. Will change my vote if the remaining arguments warrant it.

February 27, 2008  12:15 PM ET

That's pretty ignorant, Robert. A lot of the players in the 60s were measured in barefoot unlike today. Alos, Kareem made all 10 NBA All-Star games in the 80s and was still a force well into his late 30's playing in what many consider the golden era of basketball. Duncan isn't even better then Hakeem or Shaq.

February 27, 2008  12:19 PM ET

I agree. So far, the best arguments are on the right. I voted right, will change my vote if something changes.

February 27, 2008  12:32 PM ET

Vote to Cincy. The argument is definitely in Cincy's favor.

February 27, 2008  12:33 PM ET

Better argument is ----> but that could change with rebuttals but thats where it stands right now.

February 27, 2008  12:36 PM ET

John Crotty is my vote.

February 27, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Blazer, i do like that opening stat though...that was good. I just don't agree. Jordan the best....no doubt. Did you see the uniforms they wore back then and the way they dribbled the ball back in Chamberlain days. You and I can steal the ball from these guys... Jordan

February 27, 2008  12:57 PM ET

I guess TradeAngelos. I guess. But when Duncan wins his fifth title, it won't be an argument between him and Shaq. And he is already leaps and bounds better than Hakeem. Please. Don't bring that weak stuff here.

February 27, 2008  01:00 PM ET

Kareem did it well, and he did it often, He kicked buttocks the entire time he played in the the NBA and that's enough.

February 27, 2008  01:15 PM ET

I'd have said Magic myself (rather than debating Wilt or Kareem). Sure, it would have been tougher based on public opinion but there are a slew of factors in favour of Magic Johnson too...
