As it stands Moss and the Patriots are nowhere close on a contract. Also, they just watched Stallworth walk off today to the Browns.
Moss, Brown, and Gaffney are all free agents right now. Both Brown and Gaffney will probably not be resigned. So if Moss is not resigned, the Patriots are left with:
1. Wes Welker
2. Chad Jackson
3. Kelley Washington
Welker has never been a #1 WR, and isn't suited to be one at all. Jackson hasn't really shown anything, and is still recovering from a torn achilles. Washington is worthless outside of Special Teams. Hell, Jackson and Washington didn't even see an offensive snap this year.
Yes, Brady has won Super Bowls with below-average/average receiving corps, but this one takes the cake. You can't get much worse than having your #2 and #3 WRs both injury prone and having a career total of 85 catches between the two of them.
Even if Gaffney is resigned the Pats' WR corp would still be the worst Brady has ever worked with.

First of all, no team really ever NEEDS to sign anyone.
Even if Moss does in fact leave, the Patriots will still be ok. A team that finishes 18-1 and loses a few good recievers and Samuel is still in good shape. They're still going to be a top contender team.
Plus, the Pats would still have a chance to secure free agents, or pick someone up in the draft. Did that ever occur to you? There are still a lotta good players on the market (ie Bernard Berrian, Bryant Johnson, Andre Davis, etc) that would love to play for the Pats. Who wouldn't wanna play for them right now?
Besides, chances are that Moss will stay, anyways. He's expressed desire to stay, and if they give him a decent number he will.
Bio1590 said 03/01, 09:11 PM
What? The only reason they went 18-1 last year was because Moss completely opened up that offense. It was the addition of Moss that let the Pats put up an NFL record in points. Moss was the reason Brady threw 50 TD passes. Without Moss that offense goes back to what it was. I'm not touching "Top Contender" because that is not what this TD is about.
Also, Berrian and Davis have been signed already, and apparently no one has even offered Johnson a contract. Besides, he's not a #1 WR.
The draft? No WR is worth the 7th Overall pick and the Pats need to address their defense with that (GHOLSTON! >_>). Then their next pick is the 31st in Round 2. Most of the "good" WRs will probably be gone.
Right now the two sides aren't even close on a contract. And you know the Pats - they won't budge. They freely let one of the best CBs in the league go without even trying.
If Moss goes the Patriots take a step back - and we all know they aren't repeating 16-0 so that step back could be big (given their defensive worries too). If NE wants a damn good shot at being the preseason favorite again they would do best to resign Moss.

"The only reason they went 18-1 last year was because Moss completely opened up that offense." Key Word there is ONLY
So Moss is the only reason that the Pat's went 18-1??? Really???
"Without Moss that offense goes back to what it was."
Sorry, but seriously? The NE Patriots Offense has been one of the most feared Offenses in the NFL since 2001, well before Randy Moss arrived.
Actually, this draft has several really good WR's available that could fall to the Patriots: Malcolm Kelly, Mario Manningham, Desean Jackson, Limas Sweed and Devin Thomas are all really talented pickups that the Patriots could pick up and could make an impact next season. True none of them will be as good as Randy Moss next season, but they'll still help out the team.
And whether they sign Moss or they don't, the Pats are still going to be considered one of the top teams in the NFL. You're making it sound like Moss is the only reason the Patriots were good last year.
The Pats won 3 Super Bowl rings without Moss. Why is it so hard for you to believe that they can't win another without him?
He's a big asset to the team, but I guarentee you the Pats will still have a good season without him.

"So Moss is the only reason that the Pat's went 18-1??? Really???"
How can you say it isn't? They add Moss, which suddenly completely changes that offense, and they put up an NFL record in points scored, TDs scored, and PF-PA differential. Take away Moss' 23 TDs - which leaves Brady with his season average or so of 27, and that's 161 points gone. That's HUGE. Nothing really changed about that defense - it was the same as it usually is, it was just the offense that changed, and Moss is the reason it changed so much.
All those WRs you mentioned have a HUGE chance to be gone by the time the Pats pick in the second round. 55 selections between 7 and 62 is enough time for all the receivers you mentioned to be off the board - especially since there are quite a few teams who need another WR.
I don't REALLY want to get into it, but that team has done nothing but regress this offseason. They need to reverse that by resigning Moss, and as of right now it's looking like they won't.
What they have left for receiver isn't looking good at all, and is worse than what he's had. Welker isn't a #1 at all and Jackson and Washington are worthless (no offensive snaps last year at all)
Stauff Nation TB said 03/02, 05:20 PM
"How can you say it isn't?"
HOW CAN YOU SAY IT IS??? The Pats were a dynasty before Moss even got there. If you wanna TD that Randy Moss is the only reason the Pats almost went undefeated be my guest. I'd be happy to argue that. Randy Moss DID NOT make that team.
They've got the 7th pick in the draft. Why wouldn't they be able to pick a WR up then? None of those WR's will be gone by the time they get the clock. They would all be huge pickups and defidently have the quality of play to go early.
Plus, the Pats now have an incentive to keep Moss. Brady threatens to go with Moss if he signs with someone else. If Brady won't make them budge, nothing will. If the Pats let Moss, Samuel AND Brady go, their upper mangagement will be considered to be the dumbest in sports. Even dumber than Matt Millen.
Your right in saying that if they don't pick anybody up their WR corps won't look good. That's exactly why they will pick someone up, whether it be in free agency or in the draft.
And I guarentee you whoever they get will help the team so that NE fans will forget Randy Moss ever even existed.
Why?
Because the Pats will be good with or without him.

Report Offensive CommentI almost took this throwdown. IMO, the Patriots might be able to squeek by.
In FA, pick up Benard Berrian and possibly Javon Walker.
With their 7th overall draft choice, grab DeShaun Jackson.
Jackson would go #1 (although only in name...Welker works better in the slot)
Welker #2, but usually in the slot.
Berrian would go #3, but as I was saying, would probably line up on the outside.
Javon Walker, if they sign him, could be their #4 guy, or possibly be #3 if they can't get Berrian.

Funny you say that, because Deion Branch's per-game numbers have actually been higher in Seattle than they were in New England.

If that's to me, the reason they choked was because the O-line couldn't stop the Giants pass rush. Nothing to do with Moss.
