I think Herring has a GREAT shot. He fought Noguero pretty impressivlely in July but couldn't finish him. Herring is a scraper and underdog in my opinion. He has the experience of fighting GREAT fighters. His pride days in my opinion have helped him out and made him into a VET. Herring beating Cheik Kongo tonight was also very impressive. Kongo was an up and comer and Herring smashed his hopes of the title in the near future. Herring is a fighter no doubt and with the heavyweight division wide open in the ufc i see Herring having a legitimate shot. Tim Sylvia and Pitbull are more likely to move on from ufc with their contracts up. Herring is 30 years old and gaining momentum. My answer is yes! Herring will be the UFC heavyweight champion in the next 2 years.

Since Couture's retirement, the best heavyweight in the UFC has been Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira - Herring doesn't have any business laying claim to being UFC's best heavyweight

Herring may be a good fighter - but he ain't great - and I find it ironic that you would hark back on his Pride days when talking about his growth as a fighter - you do realise that he lost to virtually every good fighter in Pride? He lost to Fedor (well ok, everyone loses to Fedor), Cro Cop, Belfort and not to mention Noguiera

And how many times has Herring lost to Noguiera? Three times - Once in Pride and twice in UFC - if Herring wants to be the top heavyweight in the UFC, he's still gotta go through Nogueira - and from their past few encounters, what makes you think the result would be any different?

If I were Big Nog, I wouldn't even bother with Herring - I'd be trying to coax Couture out of retirement or trying to get another shot at Fedor

Herring needs to make sure he doesn't lose fights to fighters such as O'Brien - if he's to be taken seriously, the fight against Kongo was a start - but seriously, he's nowhere near as polished a fighter as Noguiera - just look at their records

I understand Herring lost but you have to put into perspective he now is only 30 years old while in pride was very young and taking on some pretty impressive talents. Herring almost knocked out Noguiera in July so what are you talking about. IF ANYTHING THE LOSES HAVE MADE HERRING A BETTER OPPONENT AND NOT SCARED OF ANY COMPETITOR. SCrew records in the ufc. Herring is still young and i am not very impressed with the ufc's heavyweight champ. I think the heavyweight division in the ufc is worse then boxing right now. I can't really say they're is any dominating forces in the heavyweight division of the ufc. Herring's record should not be fooled with him being categorized as a scrub. the dude has fought the best and now has some years and stability. Herring has a shot to win the title. I'm saying this with the heavyweight division being less than honarble right now. Noguiera was very close to being knocked out by Herring so give the guy a break. I know he lost to him but who's to say Noguiera will reign in the heavyweight division.

Herring didn't just lose - he lost THREE times to Nog - each loss he suffered weren't just "losses" - if anything, they were crushing losses - all three of them confirming that Nog is in a different class - I don't see how Herring could've gained any confidence out of his three losses to Minotauro - Two of these losses were UNANIMOUS decisions and one was a submission - Unfortunately for Herring, "nearly" knocking out the Big Nog ain't good enough - in fact the Big Nog just doesn't get knocked out

Take a look at Nog's record - 4 total losses - 2 to Fedor, 1 to Henderson and 1 to Barnett - All good fighters - what stands out even more is that all his losses were decisions - Noguiera just doesn't get knocked out or submitted - more proof that he's a superior fighter when compared to Herring

Now take a look at Herring's record - his whole career, he's had 13 losses - he's lost to people he shouldn't have lost to and one of his losses was due to EXHAUSTION - how is Herring even in the same class as the Big Nog?

Also, Noguiera is only two years older than Herring - so age really isn't the determining factor in this - it's not like Big Nog is jurassic a la Couture....

HErring can win the title. ;Your case that nog is in a different class in irrelevant. Nog might not have the title too much longer. Sylvia gave up in my opinion. then again "the maniac" wasn't going to be a great champ either. HErring just beat cheik kongo. that's relevant. Kongo was being pushed to fight for the title. what do you say about that. Herring is a journeyman but with the hw division so boring right now it's up to anybody. Maybe he can't beat NOG but he about knocked him out. Herring is young and determined. His resume is growing. His pride days he was a mid carder at best but now with a little momentum (beating kongo). Just because he lost 13 fights doens't mean he isn't going to amount to ****. Herring has heart and heart can keep you in fights and give you w's. Herring's heart cannot be measured. Hearing will fight for the title. Will he win it? I think he has a GREAT shot.

If we put aside the fact that Nog is a better fighter than Herring, I will agree that Herring *can* win the heavyweight title - after all, upsets can and will happen - I just think if you consider all things when discussing UFC heavyweights, Herring is still faced with several obstacles and one of them is his past record against Nog - and the truth is, Herring may not get another shot at Nog since he's already been beaten 3 times by Nog

It all comes down to the economics of spectator sports such as MMA - no one wants to pay and see Nog defend his title against someone whom he's already defeated 3 times - had Herring defeated Nog one of the times they fought, their next fight would at least be anticipated by some

I liken this to Nog's fights with Fedor - He was beaten the first time and people wanted another rematch - After getting beaten by Fedor again, you could say that even Fedor thinks he is above fighting Nog in a rematch - unfortunately, this is how things are in the fight world

Another example - Nog lost to Barnett the first time round, got a rematch and won - if anything, people would rather give Barnett instead of Herring another chance to topple Nog

The 4 top HWs in the world, right now, are:

- Minotauro Nogueira
- Fedor
- Randy Couture
- Antonio Silva

(in no particular order)

While Herring is impressive, he's a step below the elite. And yes, he's lost to Nogueira THREE times.

Funny thing is that I actually lost a TD here on fannation for stating that Fedor is the world's best HW MMA fighter. The guy I lost against picked Kongo!!!!

Damn Hyped78 - Sorry I wasn't around for that TD - I would've voted for you - I don't know how anyone can say Fedor is anything but the best heavyweight MMArtist right now....

Correction on your statement ManningToHarrison:

Herring lost to Nog twice in PRIDE, and once in the UFC. But you're right, he has already lost to Nog 3 times, why should he get yet ANOTHER shot at Nog? How often to fighters get a 3rd crack at a guy who's already beaten then twice? How many fighters get a FORTH crack at someone who's beaten them THREE times? To answer my own questions: Very, very rarely, and never.

Only way Herring should get a shot at the belt is if Nog loses it, then assuming Herring is still at the top of the heap, he should get the next shot at whoever beat Nog, but he should absolutely not get another shot at Nog while Nog has the belt.

Herring is a fun fighter to watch. I think Herring has a little confidence since beating Kongo and that might be enough. Herring in Pride to now in the UFc is two different worlds. later folks

Thanks Str8 - got it mixed up

sorry for the mistypes. I spelled and wrote things wrong. was typing with fingers and mind. I don't usually check over these posts. good argument. I still think herring has a great shot no matter if nogueira is champ.

don't worry - No one is going to hold spelling mistakes etc against you unless you're obnoxious and can't articulate your views (both of which you're not)

I don't disagree with you that Herring 'can' win the heavyweight title in UFC - upsets can happen - but obviously, what I'm saying is that all things being equal, Big Nog should/will beat Herring again - and to be honest, like Str8 said, Herring may not get a shot at Big Nog since he's already lost so many times to him - this may be unfair to Herring - but hey - life ain't always fair ^_^

Mir has a good shot at beating Nog. But i dont know if i have ever seen anyone that can survive a beating like nog.
