The game of baseball is made for the skilled player and not a juiced up one. Are you going to think a player is good or just cheating when making a great play? The average person is going to have suspicions about if the player is true or not because of all these players being reported as cheaters in the Mitchell report. This means less fans and the rest is history!
BSchwartz07 said 03/03, 05:49 PM
Now I don't completely understand what you are even trying to say here. But I will say that since you alluded to the idea that "Mitchell Report will lead to less fans" you are saying that the Mitchell report was not necessary.
This couldn't be further from the truth. Since the big power surge of the mid-90's steroids have been the story behind baseball. With every record, with every 500 foot Home Run, with every 98 MPH fastball.
Sure brining out all of the people that used at once may make for a larger story, but it will put the story BEHIND YOU.
While the game may not ever be completely clean, at this point the MLB is not supporting the users.
As far as the fans go no one of any current major stature was listed. The fact that names like Ortiz, Beckett, Rodriguez, Jeter, Beltran, Pujols, Santana, Guerrero, Teixeira, Howard, Peavy, and well do you want me to go on?
The stars of the league are now clean, and the league will do what they can do keep it that way.
How is this a bad thing? If anything lets people know who was cheating and who was clean. Now we can all move on.
Tr3y said 03/03, 05:51 PM
Your player might be clean but what if Clemens or Yankee fans see this and figure they might as well watch the NFL or anything but MLB. Who really wants to try and find a new favorite player when the allready got one in the NBA.
The people out there trying to catch these Cheaters are not going to be always ontop of thier game of finding them, thus cheaters will always be about getting all the credit. So the chance for any body to think that a good player is true, will be small.
BSchwartz07 said 03/03, 05:58 PM
Ok, again I'm a little confused with what you are trying to say, but lets try.
-You say that people will stop watching baseball because Clemens cheated?
Well the guy was over the hill, he was throwing better at 43 than he was at 23, not a huge shock.
So what is your solution there? Call him up, "Hey, we know you cheated and all, but we may lose fans so yeah, just try and not do that again."
-As far as catching people, they will always catch up with the cheaters. Guys may find a way to get away with it for a while but as soon as people catch up with what you are doing it will ruin your entire career.
What I am getting here is that you would rather we just allow people to use illegal substances to get ahead? Am I wrong here?
By that logic we should go get Mike Vick out of jail, b/c the Falcons may lose some fans.
Athletes are NOT above the law, all the Mitchell report did was research who cheated and what the MLB needs to do to end this. Unless you are a guy that got caught, HOW CAN YOU BE AGAINST THAT?!?
Tr3y said 03/03, 06:09 PM
There will be a moment when a cheater will be loose and the plays he makes will have to be amazing in order for anyone to be suspicious. Well I guess we are supossed to check out the player online to see if he is clean, ask me?, thats just not worth it. Let baseball be dishonest and see what happens!
BSchwartz07 said 03/03, 06:15 PM
How you got a single vote really puzzles me here. If you actually read this but a 7 in front of your next comment (just to see if people are reading this)
Now on to this WONDERFUL argument.
You say that "cheaters will get on the lose" so I guess they will break out of Cheater Jail.
Now instead of testing and setting up a system that discourages cheating, you think that we should "Let baseball be dishonest and see what happens!"
WOW, the LACK of testing was the reason for all of the doubt with players. Now we know who was cheating. The players are even saying that they are willing to submit blood tests, and there is no way to cheat one of those.
Truth is guys like Bonds and Clemens have always been suspected of cheating. Now we know for sure. Would you rather not know?
You say that cheating hurts the game, yet you want to help the cheaters? Umm, sure. Good luck with that.

Report Offensive CommentNo, The mitchell report was the worst thing to happen to pro sports. Now because of this, no one can take any player seriously. If you hit 50 HR's, they will say "OH MY GOD HE MUST BE ON STEROIDS" It took all credibility away from the MLB and brought doubt to all its fans.
Plus the Mitchell report didnt do anything!!! I dont think people get this, but the Mitchell Report is an ACCUSATION, it has minor proof but no coverage of players ACTUALLY taking the steroids (except for clemens and Pettite). So whats the point of the mitchell report? It is a way for a senator and congress to get some face time and help them get reelected.
I hate Mitchell, and anyone who supported this false, and completley useless document.

Report Offensive CommentMitchell did not solve anything, but he brought MLB to the point where action must take place 5-10 years earlier, earlier than the fans would have had long term resentment against a game of cheaters.
Mitchell was important, not for regaining legitimacy for the game, for prepping MLB to regain legitimacy.

Report Offensive CommentNot necessarily, only when there's a major stat increase or decrease. My view though is that players are guilty until proven innocent. The Mitchell report definitely helped, but probably could've been done with much less publicity and money. Most of the information-excluding Clemens-was already pretty well known. And Clemens already had suspicions. I remember reading a few blogs on this website accusing him of cheating.

Report Offensive CommentThe Mitchell report was about 8 years too late and i know this seems picky, but it didn't do a good enough job.

No, keep testing, but did they need to write a report that was open to the public about players who did steroids in the PAST!!!!
The point is, it was in the past, HGH wasnt banned back then and we all need to forget it and go on with the game! How did this help anyone? It didnt, it didnt make any stricter testing policies, no universal testing. All it did was get Mitchell to be a house hold name, and probably got him re-elected!

Um, he's not a Senator, hasn't been for awhile...isn't running for office...
Some people actually knew who he was well before the Mitchell report...he's world reknowned...besides being a senator (and after being a senator)
He was offered a seat on the Supreme court in the 90s...
He was Involved heavily in the Northern Ireland peace process, heavily meaning he got the violence to stop, Belfast peace agreement? Yeah, that was him...
He co-charied a Congressionally mandated Task force on the UN...
This baseball investigation was done by him cause he's beyond reproach...and well respected around the world...
