Albert Pujols is a top 3 pick in every draft...Disagree Throwdown

Pujols, this season, should not be a top 3 pick in every draft. He's a gifted player, but I think his value on the real field will outweigh his value in fantasy baseball this year. A-Rod is a consensus #1 draft pick in fantasy baseball. For some reason, Hanley Ramirez is #2 (although I think he is overrated). I personally value David Wright as the #2 player in fantasy baseball, and think - based on potential - that Miguel Cabrera should be valued as the #3 draft pick in fantasy baseball. That a lot of 3B's, but they are all 5 category players and head and shoulders about the rest at their position. I think Pujols will put together a fine season, but with the exception of his batting average, is he really that much better than Ryan Howard or David Ortiz? I don't think so.

Pujols is a beast just look at his "down" year stats:

.327 AVG
.429 OBP
.568 SLG
185 Hits
99 Runs
32 Home Runs
103 RBIs
2 Steals

These are great numbers and if he even brings this production up a little bit he would be worth a number 1.

Better than Howard? Are you kidding?

Ortiz is a DH

AP= Albert Pujols RH= Ryan Howard

Hits:(43 more hits)

AP:185
RH:142

Runs:(not much difference)

AP:99
RH:94

OBP: (37 points higher)

AP: .429
RH: .392

AVG:(yes you pointed this one out but its alot(59 points))

AP: .327
RH: .268

Stolen Bases:(THATS DOUBLE!!!)

AP: 2
RH: 1

Strikeouts:(WOW what a difference there(141 LESS))

AP: 58
RH: 199
thats in 40 more ABs

You talk of Miguel Cabrera's Potential well pujols has tons of potential he could easily be a .330-130r-200h-50hr-130rbi guy.

As for A-Rod if you look at his stats since he's come to the yankees he has a good year, great year, good year pattern going and hes coming off a Great year which if the pattern holds he'll be having just a good year this time.

Your correct in saying that Hanley Ramirez is overrated so we are just going to disclude him

The biggest reason to avoid Pujols as a top-5 pick in fantasy baseball this season has nothing to do with career statistics. Those are great, but if we were going solely off career numbers, why wouldn't you draft Ken Griffey? Injury probability.

Albert Pujols' elbow is the biggest reason I am avoiding him in the early part of the first round in all 2008 fantasy drafts. The reason his stats were down last season was due to the elbow starting to act up, but no one talked about it. The fact that people are talking about it this spring leads me to believe it is going to be a more serious problem this season.

Sure, he'll play through the pain. But I think he might only last the first month or two before landing on the DL. If he does land on the DL, this elbow injury might cost him the rest of the season -- and part of 09.

If you're a fantasy manager, do you want to risk your top pick on a player that might miss most of the season? I don't.

Here's who I would suggest drafting ahead of Pujols in 2008 (in no particular order):
A-Rod
David Wright
Miguel Cabrera
Jose Reyes
Johan Santana
Matt Holliday
Hanley Ramirez

Pujols should still go in rd. 1, just not top 5.

I will keep this in mind in my MLB Fantasy on Saturday...

March 5, 2008  05:42 PM ET

A'rod, hanley ramirez, johan santana??? Halladay??? I see other options...but can call anyone an idiot for taking Pujols.

March 5, 2008  05:50 PM ET

Not if it's AL only.

March 5, 2008  05:51 PM ET

Dude Halladay is like a 4th or 5th rounder.

March 5, 2008  06:03 PM ET

A-Rod, Hanely, Reyes?, Wright?, Holliday?, but Pujos is definetly up there. He went 4th in my draft behind A-Rod(mine), Hanley, and Reyes.

March 5, 2008  06:07 PM ET

Halladay is a 4th or 5th rounder but is a steal there. Most leagues have a CG for a scoring tool well you get 5 plus of them out of Doc Halladay every year.

March 5, 2008  06:28 PM ET

Halladay is a lot later than 4th or 5th rounder he gets picked late in all the drafts I have done so far this year.

March 5, 2008  06:32 PM ET

Did nova really say Halladay?

I hope he meant Holliday, the Colorado OF.

halladay was in like 2003...

Crap im gone for the weekend in about 3 hours

Oh well if i lose i lose but looking at your track record My arguments will be more

March 10, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Pujols elbow should be enough to drop him. He should be like ARod last season - he dropped to 4th in my league.

March 10, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Pujols is still a top 8 pick but not top 3. Arod, Ramirez and then someone like Howard, Wright, Rollins depending on the scoring in your league.

March 10, 2008  11:41 AM ET

'Albert Pujols' elbow is the biggest reason I am avoiding him in the early part of the first round in all 2008 fantasy drafts. Did y'all see what he did in the 2nd half...after he learned to deal with his injury? .349, 16 HRs, 51 RBIs, .450 OBP, .631 Slg % for a grand total of 1.081 OPS!

Besides, it depends on the scoring system anyway...cause I'm pretty sure in my leagues he was still 1st in FPPG for 1Bs.

March 10, 2008  11:42 AM ET

He almost fell to me at #5 this weekend...I had to settle for Santana :-)

March 10, 2008  12:24 PM ET

pujols has been injured all preseason and will miss alot of time this year for a team that probably wont contend

March 10, 2008  01:32 PM ET

and yet he's still been hitting bombs...

March 10, 2008  01:33 PM ET

As much as I hate to admit it Pujols probably should not be a top three pick in fantasy leagues. He has the injury that is definitely a concern and I don't think the Cardinals will be any better this year than they were last year.
