Future Franchise Cornerstone: Eddy Curry vs. Dwight Howard

I know this seems like an easy topic for me to win, but I figured Id throw it out there. Eddy Curry has to be picked over Dwight Howard.

Now, understandably, Howard beats out Curry in every single offensive and defensive category except for 2: career games played and free-throw percentage. Those are such important categories however when we are trying to put together a franchise of the future.

Free throws often win games. They are essentially free points. The word free, while misleading at first, indicates how easy these points are. If you can???t throw them down, you are hurting your team.

Games played are very important. If you play in many games, you have experience over your rivals. Curry has played in 500, as opposed to 309 for Howard. Experience is one of the most overlooked intangibles in any profession.

Stats are good. But stats dont win titles. Just ask Peyton Manning how long it took to win one. He is good with stats. He throws a lot of home runs.

Curry is big, blocks the lane, camouflages himself with tattoos so as to throw off his opponents, and he is ALWAYS HUNGRY.

Sorry, but I have to go with Dwight Howard on this one. Let me explain why...

Sure, stats are not everything. But when there is an incredible difference in terms of production, you have to give the edge to the guy who dominates the other guy.

Howard- 21.6 PPG, 14.5 RPG, 2.3 BPG
Curry- 13.1, PPG, 4.7 RPG, .5 BPG

Out of those three stats, I focus on the RPG and BPG. It is not like they are completely different types of players, both are centers who play in the Eastern Conference. Howard averages almost 10 more rebounds per game, and almost two more blocks per games. Can you really overlook those? Curry weighs 20 more pounds, yet Howard kills him in everything.

Games played is important, but when you have a team for the future, games aren't the most important stat. LeBron, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, etc. None of those guys have played a ton of games, but would you want them on a team for the future? I sure would, and I'd definitely take Howard.

Curry has played longer, but he hasn't performed better, even in all that time. Howard has almost 1000 more rebounds more than Curry, in far less time.

"and he is ALWAYS HUNGRY"

Have your tattoos and "hunger", I'll take Dwight Howard.

No need to apologize my friend. I should do the honors since you accepted a throwdown you simply can not win. You???re kind of like the Iraqi Foreign Minister in 2002.

Well, as you stated, stats are not everything. Incredible difference or not. Patrick Ewing sure looked good as opposed to Luc Longley. We all know how that panned out.

Weight has little to do with rebound ability. Curry is actually at a clear disadvantage because he has more gravity to fight. That???s like telling a baby not to slump over when you sit them upright. Not their fault they aren???t good with gravity.

None of the guys you have mentioned have played a ton of games. That is correct. But from my point of view, games played is a huge factor in all of this. You also didnt mention the free throws. Howard is like a homeless guy begging for change only to pay for free lunch. How could he screw free up?

Hunger in the battlezone we call the paint, camouflage to hide yourself in the lane ??? you want me to have those? No problem.

Awesomeness Points (somehow) will follow, along with Curry???s stat slide due to the absence of one ???Starbury??????.Ram beat me to the punch on my own famous throwdown clinchers.

Free throw shooting isn't everything. Shaq was an awful free throw shooter, yet he still managed to have a very successful career.

Howard may miss more free throws than Curry, but he makes up for the difference in scoring. Howard is great in the post and everything he scored down low can offset his shortcomings at the line.

Howard has far more double-doubles than. Howard averages more points. Howard averages more rebounds. Howard averages more blocks. Howard averages more assists.

Curry has more tattoos.

I would take Howard.

Shaq won because of Kobe and Wade. Lets just be serious here.

Howard is pretty good in the post, yes. But what was your argument about thereafter? Stats stats stats. Points, rebounds, blah blah blah. I already stated that I find statistics to be overrated.

You may take Howard. I would rather take a nap.

Anyway, Eddy Curry unfortunately fails to register Awesome Points. Which means a further explanation of the scale won't happen now. As stated by ramdrumaster, the Knicks were stripped of any awesome points that come from playing in NY, playing in the Garden, and wearing the color blue. Also - being named after some really stinky food.

The absence of Starbury has obviously taken its toll. He is a star. Curry was supposed to feed off that stardom. The guy has his own sneaker. Cmon now. But because of the Great Satan, Isiah Thomas, Marbury is an outcast. This has let to a monumental collapse in production for Curry this season. That hardly indicates it will go on forever.

Considering he has to work against gravity, play in the tough eastern conference, play without Starbury, and play for Isiah - he's pretty good and we can't let their failures blur his greatness.

Ok, our opinions vary. Its cool, though.

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.

March 7, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Busting out the Shakespeare in the first comment, Moon? Aren't you supposed to make everyone think you are a stoned homer before you pull back the curtain to reveal the wizard?

March 7, 2008  01:48 PM ET

Stoned homers often quote shakespeare. Sometimes it is better that I'm more earnest in my throwdownage...and keep the revelation secret until later.

March 7, 2008  01:53 PM ET

Curry is much better than Shaq in his prime.

March 7, 2008  01:57 PM ET

Dizz, that may be your funniest avatar yet....

March 7, 2008  02:00 PM ET

I hope 0x knows what Moon is all about before he gets upset.

How many manning points does Curry get?

March 7, 2008  02:01 PM ET

I don't think Curry qualifies for Manning Awesomeness points. Knicks lost the right to award those as part of the lawsuit Isiah Thomas lost.

March 7, 2008  02:02 PM ET

They lost all that money and the ability to get Manning awesomeness points? Wow, that's harsh.

March 7, 2008  02:08 PM ET

We'll see if Moon picks up on the inevitable coolness factor that Curry gets because he plays with a guy who has his own shoe and nickname--"Starbury"

March 7, 2008  02:10 PM ET

What are these Manning Awesomness points? And how do I acquire them? Are they as good as real money?

March 7, 2008  02:14 PM ET

You can use them at Disneyland seeing how that's where the Manning's last 2 seasons ended with a trip there!

March 7, 2008  02:15 PM ET

Numerous variations of the awesomeness scale exist. Only mine are really valid, being that I invented them. Its like Einstein being guilty of nuclear proliferation.

March 7, 2008  02:19 PM ET

This is such a no contest I can't believe it. Eddy Curry will be in the league for 5 more years only because he is huge. Howard will contend for MVP honors in the next two years.

March 7, 2008  02:23 PM ET

But if Curry picks up some Awesomeness points somewhere along the line doesn't his value go up.

March 7, 2008  02:25 PM ET

jake...you so crazy. Thats all I got to say.

March 7, 2008  02:26 PM ET

shaq proved that big men can dominate while being terrible at free throws

March 7, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Obviously I typed my argument in Word to give the impression that I was working. And of course the question marks popped up like chicken pox. My apologies.

March 7, 2008  02:31 PM ET

Use notepad.

March 7, 2008  02:32 PM ET

Can you believe I have no access to notepad on Windows at work? Thats like telling me I can't drink in a bar.

March 7, 2008  02:34 PM ET

That's impressive. Did they manage to get minesweeper and solitaire off the computer as well?
