Straight Up Busts (13 Total):
1. David Carr - QB
3. Joey Harrington - QB
4. Mike Williams - OT
6. Ryan Sims - DT
12. Wendell Bryant - DT
16. William Green - RB
17. Phillip Buchanon - DB
18. T.J. Duckett - RB
22. Bryan Thomas - DE
23. Napoleon Harris - LB
27. Mike Rumph - CB
31. Robert Thomas - LB
32. Patrick Ramsey - QB
Borderline Busts (4 Total):
5. Quentin Jammer - CB
13. Donte' Stallworth - WR
19. Ashley Lelie - WR
28. Jerramy Stevens - TE
Disappointing (4 Total):
8. Roy Williams - SS*
20. Javon Walker - WR
21. Daniel Graham - TE
29. Marc Columbo - OT
*It's well documented that Roy is horrible as a SS and needs to be replaced. Gets burned too much and can't cover to save his life, plus all he can do is horse collar tackle.
So out of 32 draftees in the first round there's 21 that never reached their potential. Only 7 guys became "big" names - Peppers, Henderson, Freeney, Shockey, Haynesworth, Reed, and Sheppard, and currently there's rumours that Peppers, Sheppard, and Shockey will not be on the team that drafted them next year.
StovePipe said 03/08, 03:26 AM
First, I don't think you should have any starters on your "busts" list. Duckett and Ramsey are not busts, they are solid backup players who were drafted a little to high.
Your list should be:
1. David Carr - QB
3. Joey Harrington - QB
4. Mike Williams - OT
6. Ryan Sims - DT
12. Wendell Bryant - DT
16. William Green - RB
27. Mike Rumph - CB
28. Jerramy Stevens - TE
I submit the class of 1997:
#9 Tommy Knight (DB) - Out of the league after 4 years, made a brief comeback attempt in '03.
#11 Michael Booker (DB) - Out of the league after 4 years.
#14 Reinard Wilson (DE) - Out of the league after 6 years, averaging 4 sacks per year.
#15 Yatil Green (WR) - Out of the league after 2 years.
#16 Reidel Anthony (WR) - Out of the league after 4 years.
#22 David LeFlour (TE) - Out of the league after 3 years.
#25 Jon Harris (DE) - Out of the league after 2 years, averaging 1 sack per year.
#26 Jim Druckenmiller (QB) - Out of the league after 2 years, threw a total of 57 passes in the NFL.
#27 Rae Carruth (WR) - Out of the league after 2 years because he tried to kill his girlfriend and unborn child.
That is a much worse first round.

"Duckett and Ramsey are not busts, they are solid backup players who were drafted a little to high."
No, that is the definition of a bust. Duckett and Ramsey were drafted to help out their franchise and it didn't work out. Ramsey is on his 3rd team already and Duckett is on his 4th. How are they NOT busts?
I don't see why you edited my list either. That wasn't the point.
Also, why did you not mention the big names from 1997? Once you throw in the fact that that first round produced
Orlando Pace
Darrell Russell
Shawn Springs
Peter Boulware (retired due to injuries)
Walter Jones
James Farrior
Warrick Dunn
TONY GONZALEZ (best TE of all-time)
Tarik Glenn
Trevor Pryce
There's a few HoFers in that first round.
2002 has yet to show a player that could possibly make the HoF, and has way more busts and questions than 1997.
StovePipe said 03/08, 02:11 PM
I edited your list because your definition of a draft bust is wrong. Just because a player is drafted in the first round, doesn't mean they should be a superstar. Players drafted in the top 10, generally, are expected to be one of the top 10 players in the league at that position within a few year. Every year you see guys picked in the first round who are expected to share time with an established starter on the team (i.e. Duckett), or guys who are considered project players by a coaching staff and then get released because that staff is no longer in place (i.e. Ramsey).
It's very popular to slap the "bust" tag on NFL players and analyze and grade draft classes. Smart NFL people realize that only a third of the players picked in the first round are going to make it to a Pro Bowl (10 PB players in '97 class, 9 in '02) and that you're looking for solid players who will be 10 year starters in the NFL or important role players. When you are out of the league within a few years, that is an absolute bust. Guys who are current starters are not busts. Guys like Carr and Harrington go into the "Disappointment" section and could be busts within a couple years.
Bio1590 said 03/09, 01:27 AM
How are Carr and Harrington NOT busts? Neither are on an NFL team anymore. Both were drafted to lead a franchise to greatness and both horribly failed.
The first round is used to draft players to play with your franchise and be great for 10 years or more. Anyone in the Top 10-15 is drafted to get a franchise back on top. Do you realize that out of the 21 players I mentioned only Roy Williams is still on the team that drafted him, and even then people are calling for his head?
A "bust" is anyone who is expected to do great things but fails. All of the players I mentioned have never done great things, or for the 4 "disappointments" they have had great years but never were GREAT.
As for Duckett, he's now on his 4th team, and what are you talking about? ATL drafted him because they had no one at RB. 2002 was the year they acquired Dunn and it was the year after Dunn put up 2.8 YPC.
Ramsey was drafted to replace Brad Banks - to be the starter, not a "project player". He failed, and has not started a game in like 3 years.
Some players still being in the league doesn't mean they're not busts.
StovePipe said 03/09, 06:54 PM
I've made my points about your list of "busts", submitted a 1st round draft class that had more.
All you want to do is argue about the players on your list. I show that you have a list of busts that has 8 players, and a few of those still have a slim chance to get their careers going if given the right opportunity. I gave you a bigger list of guys who didn't even make it this long in the NFL. You haven't even bothered to make an effort to debate my players.
I might add that your entire first statement is just a cut-and-paste job from a TD you've already done. Not a whole lot of effort from you in this TD, just smoke-and-mirrors debate where you try and get voters to look at the wrong things and recycling stuff you've already used.

Report Offensive CommentBio, way to put Roy on their. You are one of the few who sees the fraud he has become. One more year like last year and he is a borderline bust. Ever since Darren woodson left he has been a shell of what he was. Last year was by far his worst year. Not sure what happened to him but he better get his **** together.
Will wait to vote for more arguements.

This got out of hand though but I think it was unfair. StovePipe didn't mention the "big" names of his draft while I mentioned the "Big" names of mine. Hopefully people see this again and see he was a few HoFers
Bio1590 | 03/08/08, 11:53 AM
Report Offensive CommentI see what you're saying Bio, but your TD was about busts. Stove listed the busts. Why waste characters about the good draft picks? Both draft classes had their good and bad picks. The ones he has listed are by far horrible busts, but later in the 1st round.
Oso on Vacation | 03/08/08, 12:02 PM
Report Offensive CommentIt's not specifically about busts.
You just use them to show how bad a draft was.
If you have an even split of 16 names and 16 busts then a draft was decent.
A draft year CANNOT be the worst if there are definite HoFers in it, and one of those HoFers is the best all-time at his position.
