Over the past two years, Rod Marinelli has gotten rid of 2 of Detroit's "playmakers". Dre Bly and Shaun Rogers.
On a team that has VERY limited playmakers, let alone guys with actual talent, it is obvious that the overall talent has decreased. But have they actually gotten better for it? I argue YES!
I will start with Dre Bly. Dre Bly was a player that was only good at 'hanging around'. By this, I mean, he was able to be in the right place at the right time(half of the time). He was not an aggressive tackler and he did not play hard on every down. Look what happened to him on MNF last year in overtime against the Packers. He let a much slower receiver run right by him on the first play, and the 'King Cheese Head' himself hit him in full stride. In addition, we got two players in return to fill two spots that were greatly needed. 2 is better than 1, right?
Now to Shaun Rogers aka "Big Baby". Need I say more. Football is a game of men, not babies. Countless times did that man pull himself out of a game to sit on the bench to suck oxygen. It was easy for him to get sacks when he was in there, he only played 1/3 of the plays the others did.
Rod is building a team of men!

How could taking away two of the best players on your team be a good thing?
Dre Bly is considered to be one of the best CB's in the NFL. Not the best, but one of the best, and the Lions traded him for a running back who ran for 182 yards last season and a left tackle. Dre Bly was a huge loss. To show, look at these passing stats from 06 and 07
Passing D 06
Broncos (without Bly) 213.1 passing YPG, 19.1 PPG, 327 completions
Lions (with Bly) 220.0 YPG, 24.9 PPG, 398 completions
Passing D 07
Broncos (with Bly) 193.4 YPG, 25.6 PPG, 279 Completions
Lions (without Bly) 258 YPG (2nd highest in NFL) 27.8 PPG (most in NFL), 442 completions (most in NFL)
As you can see, with the absense of Bly the Lion's passing D suffered greatly. Why should it improve more in 08?
Shaun Rodgers led the Lions in sacks last year with 7. Why would they let go their main sack leader? Their D line is only going to suffer.
And with the worst defense in the NFL last season losing another big player, I don't see how Rod Marinelli is improving this team. They're going downhill defensively and their Offense is below average.

Here is some stats for you to ponder.
Lions Def in 07--tied for 3rd in the NFL in total takeaways (17 ints, 18 fum. rec) WITHOUT BLY
Broncow Def in 07--tied for 11 in takeaways (14 ints, 15 fum. rec) WITH BLY
I do admit that the Lions give up a lot of yards and points, but as said before, Marinelli PREACHES toughness and turnovers. They were able to create MORE in 07 than in 06 with Bly.
In a move to improve the secondary this year, Marinelli traded his so called "best D-lineman" for a cornerback. How good is Bodden? Check this out: 93 tackles, 6 ints, and 3 fum rec in 07. That was good enough to tie for 2nd in the entire NFL in total takeaways! He was the ONLY CB to have 3 picks and 3 fumbles; and the only player with at least 88 tack and 6 picks. Where is the coveted Bly on that list? Bly had 5 picks, fewer than Bodden. ADV: BODDEN
Now to address the D line. Rogers did have 7 sacks in 07 but played all 16 games. D. White had 6.5 in only 14 games as well as Devries. If they play in those 2 other games, I think they get 1/2 each. ADV: LIONS
Now the best stat: DET improved to 7 wins last year. Biggest blowout of the year for them: Denver! Where was Bly then?
Stauff Nation TB said 03/12, 09:19 AM
Ok first of all, who cares about how many takeaways your team has when your defense flat out sucks?
Oh well they had a lotta takeaways, so it's not that big of a deal if they lost Bly... YES IT IS. They still had the worst passing Defense in the NFL last year. Giving away their star CB the year before was plain idiotic! How did giving away Bly and Rogers IMPROVE this defense? IT DIDNT. How could it possibly?
Takeaways mean nothing when your passing defense in ranked last in the league. What do you think Marinelli is more worried about? Takeaways or the passing D? The Lions were also last in the league in Points with 444!!! To give you a clue of how much that really sucks, look at the Bears given points this season. The Bears were ranked 16th in the NFL for most points last year with 348 pts... 96 less than the Lions in just as many games.
And the Lions really got nothing in return. Bodden will help the situation. The guy played 16 games last year, but look at his career and outside last season the most games he's played in a season was 13 (2 seasons with a combined total of 17 games also). What does that say? The guy can't stay healthy. You expect him to stay healthy now?

face it, the Lions are one of the worst drafting teams and will never get good.
But I agree, he did need to clean house. I pick for the lions could be Brohm, they need a QB.

Here is the problem. They have been rebuilding since god knows when. They should have a decent team at this point. At this point, they have nothing, so why should they keep something that will remain useless to them? Shaun Rogers was a big, fat, slow pig that used Steroids, and he played well after them anyway, so that also makes him not the brightest bulb in the pack.
What is NOT helping them, is that Rod Marinelli is getting a bunch of 2nd and 3rd string defensive players from the Buccanneers. I know he knows them, but in football you have to let it go sometimes. It is his old team, and he should let them go and go somewhere where he can be good. However, they are keeping players on their roster than they do not need, and now they are cleaning house, leaving more cap space.
They are making the most idiotic mistakes in signing players, but the good thing is that they are cleaning out what doesn't need to be there.
My vote goes to the left for now, but arguments could change it.

How can they be improving by cleaning house when they have been rebuilding ever since Barry left. Maybe they need to hire a new maid, because the job the old has been doing cleaning hasn't worked out very well.

Nothing wrong with the trading of Rogers but losing Dre Bly was just a bad move. Bly was too solid of a corner to let go. I like where B Redii was going with this but my vote is to Stauff Nation.

Vote to B-Red because Stauff actually said "Who cares about how many takeaways your team has"
That's ridiculous. The ONLY reason the Lions were 6-2 to begin the season was because their defense was forcing tons of turnovers. You're right the defense wasn't good at all and yet they were winning some low-scoring games simply because they were taking the ball from the other team. When teams took care of the ball against Detroit they won...big.
Rogers was lazy...he might be a dominant DT for the Browns but he wasn't happy with Detroit and wasn't going to give effort. Good trade for the Lions there...got a starting CB and a 3rd Round pick that could turn into another starter.
As for Bly...what they got in return wasn't great but he wanted out. I'd rather have an average player who plays hard and wants to be there than an above average corner who wants out.

the simple fact is that they improved to 7 wins. I never said they were the best team in the league, but they are getting better. Anyways, good stuff and it was fun to try my first Throwdown.

did you read the rest of the sentence where I explained that?
"Ok first of all, who cares about how many takeaways your team has when your defense flat out sucks?"
The takeaways obviously didn't contribute much if they still had one of the worst defenses in the NFL. I'm not looking at one stats that the D didn't suck in, I'm looking at the big picture.

the only reason the Lions are still bad is b/c they change coaches every 2 yrs. This is te only coach under Millen that is still here for a 3rd yr. The state of this organization needs to placed on the shoulders of the GM. Getting rid of Rogers was good and bad depending how you look at it. MArinelli had to sedna message that that type of player was not going to be on his team, dispite the extreme talent. What we got for him was a big help to a sorry secondary that needed a #1 and 2 corner. Now Bly on the other hand is also extrememly talented but what we got for him hasnt really paned out. Foster false started himself to the bench and Bell only played in 3 games. Even if Bly hit like a girl (no offense ladies) he was still a good cover corner, but just didnt fit the scheme Marinelli is running. Marinelli is slowley but surely building a team that players are going to want to play for and wont just be lightning in a bottle but a long time contender.
