First, let me say I say 7 years because I like 7.

Second, I see this happening for many reasons. UFC/MMA is on the rise, and rapidly. Not two years ago Chuck Liddell wasn't a household name. Now he's making appearances here in San Antonio at Brook Army Medical Center. Gyms are springing up everywhere to teach you MMA, and MMA products are being sold at an alarming pace. I can't walk down the street without seeing 3 different Affliction or Tapout shirts.

MMA has already surpassed hockey.

For 2007 the NHL finals had a 1.6 nielson, while the reg season had a 1.0 nielson

UFC Nations Collide on spike pulled in a 1.84 Nielson, UFC raked in 194.5 MILLION paper view dollars in 2007.

Hockey is already light years behind and it will get worse.

Alright, since you are helping me prove my point, I'll just act like you are arguing against me and proceed with the throwdown.

As my competitor already stated, the UFC has already surpassed the NHL at certain times. One being UFC Nations Collide when they pulled in a rating of 1.84 while the NHL's best was a 1.7 in 2007.

However, my opponent was wrong in the revenue part. In 2006 the UFC grossed over 190mil in PPV buys. In 2007 it grew a reported 220mil. That's about 15% growth in one year. And that's ONLY in PPV.

And, recently EliteXC inked a deal with CBS to broadcast several of their events. The events are scheduled to air on Saturday nights in a prime-time slot. CBS will broadcast four events per year. That's right in EVERYONE'S living room. With UFC on Spike, and EliteXC on CBS, there's not one person who won't know what MMA is.

The spike shows have already surpassed the hockey ratings. Im not going to do the legwork in a losing effort wtih ratings: Hockey is steadily going down in recent yrs and MMA is rising like my wang watching "yung as they **** 9".

MMA in general and UFC are lightyears ahead of Hockey already, therefore; your TD about 7 yrs is wrong.

In addition to all the TV exposure, Hollywood is jumping on the bandwagon. I hate to mention this movie, but Never Back Down is based on MMA. Sadly, I know. But still, acknowlegdement is acknowledgement. And if that movie hits with moviegoers (which it probably will because it's Save the Last Dance on HGH), then there will be more. Just hopefully better movies like Remember the Titans and etc.

Everything points in the direction of UFC/MMA growth. From merchandise sales, to PPV buys, corporate sponsonships, to primetime-in-your-face TV spots. While the NHL is having trouble keeping and attracting fans, UFC/MMA is gathering them by the boat-load.

All we need now is for Drew Rosenhaus to represent a fighter and hold press conferences. Then that's when MMA will know that it has arrived.

I guess I really have nothing else to say, because Frank wants to help me out with his arguments. I guess I'll let him do it one more time.

Thanks for voting. Umm...A mushroom walks into a bar. Bartender says, "Hey, we don't serve your kind in here!!" Mushroom says, "Why not? I'm a fungi." (get it fun guy, fungi) No, not funny?

I'm just trying to use up space.

This is your TD, copied and pasted:

UFC/MMA will surpass the NHL in America in 7 years.

UFC has already surpassed the NHL in popularity, ratings, and revenue. Therefore you are wrong:

Key word here being: SURPASS IN 7 YRS,

If I am Matt Kenseth and I am leading a race. Jeff Gordon is 2nd. I (Matt Kenseth) cannot surpass him because I am already ahead of him.

I meant to say as one of the 4 Major Sports.

March 13, 2008  01:58 PM ET

Okay, so you're helping me out? I don't get it. It really hasn't, YET. NHL revenue last year: 2.2 BILLION. But I'm not gonna sit here and argue against myself.

I like beets. Does that count?

I understand the interest in UFC & MMA in general. I do think its exciting. But the NHL has been successful in this country for decades. You have a history with the Stanley Cup and you still sell out big arenas. The sport is simply recovering from a doldrum exacerbated by the lockout, which crippled the sport. If you have a Ranger-Red Wing final this year (sorry, homerism), you will see some strong ratings.

American sports all have 1 thing in common, at least. And thats family attendance at the games. Families spend hundreds of dollars a pop to attend hockey/baseball/basketball/football. There is the wildcard.

Frank took the backdoor on this one. I'll gladly take this in a throwdown the legit way.

You guys are retarded. Hahaha! I laughed though, so I guess I am too.

That is from another TD's comments...it is about Little E being the awesomest driver.

March 13, 2008  03:00 PM ET

The Mets just traded Angel Pagan, Ambiorix Burgos, 12 signed Darryl Strawberry bats, and seaweed from the Jersey shore to Minnesota for Francisco Liriano and Joe Mauer.

Boredom. Apologies.

March 13, 2008  03:45 PM ET

This is an evil evil TD, I vote for pity for the NHL.

MMA might be at its peak now. It will be interesting if it can keeps its current status, grow or fade like kickboxing did in the late 80s early 90s. As these fighters get better you won't see people like Kimbo slice coming in and being able to compete. These fighters will become as trained as boxers are at their craft. The sport is really in its infant stages. Now as your athletes become better more rules will have to be applied because fighters will be killing each other in the ring (literally and this is no joke). MMA has been able to avoid these problems with their resurgence but their fighters are not done perfecting their craft, not by a long shot. Boxing goes through these issues every time there is a serious injury or death. Once MMA gets guys who can kill you with a punch than you will see the sport change once again. Glove sizes and shorter fights all have been implemented in boxing in recently to protect the fighter. Can the sport change and still remain popular? We won't know until it happens.

March 13, 2008  03:48 PM ET

you are comparing two shows in which one you pay for and the other is on cable...andi bet if you compare the rating to UFC'S basic cable shows and not the monthly or bi monthly actino packed big name events...hockey would pumple it...

coul dhave argued this instead of agreeing

March 13, 2008  03:51 PM ET

How about we arrange some fights between the NHL and MMA.......:-)

March 13, 2008  03:57 PM ET

I know what you are saying Steveo, but I said that too. The Spike show beat Hockey. And now that it's gonna be on CBS, that too will beat hockey.

March 13, 2008  03:59 PM ET

Hockey also fills arenas nation wide almost every night. MMA does it once a week.

"With UFC on Spike, and EliteXC on CBS, there's not one person who won't know what MMA is."

I can see people who don't care about it/are opposed to it and peple who don't watch TV not knowing about it (or at least not caring about it).
