Roiders didn't invent better baseball through chemistry and to ignore what the predecessors of the era did to enhance their performance is silly.
Lilwound said 03/15, 11:49 AM
Your previous TD on the topic obviously took a downward turn. I'd like a shot.
The big difference between steroids and the previous "PEDs" is that steroids is actually a proven enhancer. Steroids have been shown to increase an athlete's ability to gain muscle and to sharpen reaction time. Other things like anphetamines may give more energy, like drinking caffiene, but it does not completely change the bodies physical capabilities.
As you mentioned in your previous argument, chewing tobacco was used to get an "edge", which unless I've missed some study, is not true. Then you hear stories of Babe Ruth drinking eye-drops, because he believed they helped him hit HRs. Athletes would indeed eat a sweaty sock if they believed it gave them an edge. But the main difference between those methods and steroids is that, with the exception of anphetamines, these are all placebo's. The idea that they have a lucky bat, perhaps a lucky jock, or they're chewing skoal, it all just gives them the confidence that they have something more than their competitor.
In contrast, steroids literally gives you something more than a clean player. Roids physically enhance a players capabilities.
Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox said 03/15, 07:50 PM
You say the difference between steroids and previous PEDs is that 'roids alone are proven to enhance. This is simply not true. Comparing amphetamines to drinking coffee is dangerous naivete.
While many of the things you mention are indeed a placebo effect and/or superstition or old wives tales, not all are.
Amphetamines are also a proven performance enhancer, can only be obtained legally by prescription, and have been used by baseball players since their inception in the 50's. They aren't just some caffeine pills from the corner convenience store. In fact, MLB has put them on their performance enhancing drugs list and banned them.
Would you be ok with your High School child popping greenies to gain an edge on the field? After all it's just like drinking a couple of cups of coffee, right?
While the effects of Amphetamines are not a pronounced or long lasting as anabolic steroids, they are still a very effective short term performance enhancer and have been used by ball players to great effect for more than half a century
If Bonds loses the HR crown to steroids, then Aaron loses it to Greenies. I guess Babe Ruth and his eyedrops should be recognized as the true Home Run King
Lilwound said 03/15, 08:15 PM
Carbohydrates have been proven to boost energy levels when consumed a day before. Many athletes will eat pasta, potatoes, and other foods high in starches the day before competition in order to have more energy. Is it time to put an asterisk next to anyone who ate potatoes?
I understand there is a a large difference between "greenies", caffiene, and starches, but in the end, the effects that these are all taken for are to boost a players energy. I am not condoning or saying that anphetamines should be legal, I am merely saying the affect that these drugs had on a players career would be miniscual in comparison to what steroids can do.
Barry Bonds- HR/BA/SLG By age:
32: 42/.291/.585
33: 37/.303/.609
34: 34/.262/.617 (only 102 games)
35: 49/.309/.688
36: 73/.328/.863
37: 46/.370/.799
These stats have been shown before. Bonds hit more than 40 HR's once, before the age of 31, when most others are in their prime. When all other players are decreasing with age, he gets stronger.
I don't have enough characters to put Clemens' stats there too, but you now how they look. You show me evidence that greenies have impacted stats this heavily and I will forfit.
Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox said 03/15, 08:32 PM
It's not a matter of if they impacted stats in an equal way. I never claimed they did. At the same time, you can't be a little bit pregnant.
You don't absolve a car thief for stealing a Honda just because other guys stole Mercedes.
The Mickey Mantles, Willie Mays, and Hank Aarons of the world used greenies because it was the performance enhancer that was available to them.
The entire purpose of the TD was to point out that 'roids, while getting a lot of attention in this day and age, were simply the latest method of enhancing performance to gain an unfair advantage on the field.
Nobody was searching Mickey Mantles locker for little green pills in those days largely because there wasn't the animosity between players and the media, nor was there near the amount of media around. Generally one or two beat writers to cover a team, and those writers depended on cooperation of the players to put food on the table. You don't bite the hand that feeds you so the use of PEDs were an open secret.
Today we have incredible competition among the media to come up with a "gotcha" story to feed the publics unquenchable thirst for dirt. Today Mantle would be seen as a womanizing cheater.
Lilwound said 03/15, 08:56 PM
I agree with you that the media is a whole different animal than it once was. But the "gotcha" story is almost as old as baseball; recall the muckrakers of the early 1900s? Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle"?
However, the topic being "Roids didn't invent a better form of baseball through chemistry" I have argued that yes, they have. They have impacted the game, the stats and everything sorrounding the world of professional sports in a way that no other form of "cheating" has, and that's not JUST the media's spin.
I also will not disagree that previous HOFers were clean as a whistle. A players personal life, i.e. Mantle's womanizing, has nothing to do with the game of baseball. Baseball fans joke about Jeter and Mariah Carrey, but we aren't going to shun him because Glitter sucked. No people dislike Jeter because he's an overrated player who can't field.
Popping pep pills alone will not turn a good player into a great one. Players who cork their bat or scuff a ball, face a suspension and a fine. Players who intentionally through a ball game are banned. Different levels of crime have different levels of punishment. It's true in the world, the MLB, and the "Moral" Court.
Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox said 03/15, 09:14 PM
"However, the topic being "Roids didn't invent a better form of baseball through chemistry""
Ah...but that's NOT the topic. Read it again:
Roiders didn't invent better baseball through chemistry.
Not Roids...Roiders. There is a significant difference.
I never said steroids weren't an improved method of using chemicals to enhance performance, only that those using 'roids didn't invent the idea of using chems for that purpose. And, in fact, ball players have been using chemicals for precisely that reason for over a half century.
Again, this isn't about steroids being more effective...everything is more effective as technology has advanced. Bats, balls, gloves, face masks, and performance enhancers have all evolved over time.
Just because Mantle used inferior equipment doesn't mean he wasn't playing the same game. And just because the PEDs available to him weren't as potent as some of the designer stuff around today doesn't mean his performance wasn't enhanced as a result if it's use.
Anabolic steroids were just an improvement on the age old concept of using whatever you can to gain a competitive advantage regardless of the consequences.

Same to you Lilwound, and thanks again for challenging me. I was starting to get frustrated with some of the folks taking my TD's. ;-)

Very impressive both of you. Seriously- a lot of thought went into this, and it's a great argument. I changed my mind after almost every argument. It's a very tough vote because I agree with many points on both sides, but overall I agree that previous drug use should not be ignored. I also that steroids may be proven enhancers, but the point of taking them is the same as it was for those who took greenies- to try to get an edge. Just because steorids work better doesn't make them more evil.
Nice, nice job.

Wow, this was a really well argued TD. Have to vote left however. Keep having images of Favre and smelling salts, which some could say give an "edge", but it won't keep him out of the HOF. I realize that's an NFL reference in a baseball TD, but same concept.

The comparison here is out - of -whack. Steroids and tobacco?? The impact that roids (all of them) have on the game is light years beyond greenies. I do think cheating is cheating, but these kinds of comparison are not valid. Unless I mis-understood something. It is like saying shooting someone w/ a bb gun is the same as shooting them w/ a shotgun.

That's the truth. Lilwound has been leaving intelligent comments in TD's for some time now. The comments were so well thought out and well written that it was only a matter of time before he/she jumped into the fray. This one deserves more attention than it received.
