Will the Detroit Tigers have at least 5 All-Stars?

I say yes.

Here is the list of Tiger All-Stars last year:

Carlos Guillen
Placido Polanco
Pudge Rodriguez
Justin Verlander
Magglio Ordonez

All of those guys are excellent players and will probably get into the All-Star game again.

That list? That was after they added Miguel Cabrera, Dontrelle Willis, Jacque Jones, and Edgar Renteria.

Miguel Cabrera is a perenial All-Star, Dontrelle Willis and Jacque Jones look to turn things around, Edgar Renteria hit .330 last year, he might do even better thios year.

Now lets look at the players who got snubbed of making the Al;l-Star Team:

Jeremy Bonderman
Curtis Granderson
Gary Sheifield

Now all of those guys are back with bigger names and more fans.

The Tigers will, no doubt, have five All-Stars.

OK, I'll go against the grain and say they will not have 5 all-star reps this year.

For starters, you have to remember that last years A.L. all-star game was managed by Leyland and his staff...the guy who picks reserves...they won't have that advantage this year.

Sheffield, while still a pretty productive hitter is a full time DH these days and can't seem to stay healthy for long stretches as age creeps up on him.

Verlander/Bonderman/Willis - Come on. Bonderman and Willis are both coming off of seasons where their ERA was over 5.00. To expect either to sniff the A.S. game is crazy. Verlander has a shot, but no guarantee.

Polanco had a career year last year in making his only A.S. game during his 10 year career. It's overly optimistic to expect to see him make it this year again.

Jaques Jones? You kidding me? Not unless he buys a ticket.

Granderson might be worthy but has an awful lot of competition in CF in the A.L. so he's a likely omission.

Maggs and Pudge are likely representatives if they remain healthy. Verlander if he gets off to a good start. And I'll give you Cabrera if he quickly adjusts to the A.L.

Somewhere between 2 and 4 is more likely.

Jim Leyland wanted to win that game, he didn't just go out and give free passes to the All-Star Game to his players. If he was doing that, why didn't he pick Jeremy Bonderman?

Jeremy Bonderman was 9-1 by the All-Star Break last year, he just tends to do bad in the second half. He will make it if he has another consecutive good first half.

Dontrelle Willis bombed in Florida most likely because of desire to get out of the organization. Face it, that team was the joke of the league last season, Detroit will give him a fresh start.

Verlander is a fantastic pitcher, I can almost gaurantee he will get to the All-Star Game. He has had two great years, I don't see that stopping. With a better offense than last year, he should get a lot more wins.

Placido Polanco has always been a good hitter, right around .300. He has a good chance to hit high again, but if he plays great defense like always, that will get him in.

If Jacque Jones finds some of his power, he could be a sleeper pick for the All-Star Game.

Granderson was a 20-20-20-20 guy, he has a hge name, and hit .300 last year. Sounds like an All-Star player.

At least five will make it, maybe more.

"Dontrelle Willis bombed in Florida most likely because of desire to get out of the organization."

Wait. You believe Willis purposely tanked in Florida just so he'd be traded? Interesting as Willis said repeatedly he DIDN'T want to be traded. But taking your statement at face value, this is the kind of guy you want to see in an A.S. game? One who would purposely play below his abilities to get out of a bad situation?

Polanco is indeed a good punch and Judy hitter with a career .305 BA. What he isn't is a perennial all star. He had far and away career highs last year in BA and Runs scored. None of his other numbers have ever been overly impressive and he was a 1st time all star at the age of 31 last year. Career season = 1 and done in A.S. appearances.

I'm still laughing at the Jacque Jones pick. Finds some of his power? The guy has never hit more than 27 home runs in a season. Has never driven in more than 85 and has never had a BA higher than .304. You think he has a legit shot to be an All Star? As an OF in the AL? If so, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn for sale...cheap.

Granderson has too much competition in CF. He has an outside shot but probably not this year.

I didn't mean that and you took what I wrote in a different way.

"Dontrelle Willis bombed in Florida most likely because of desire to get out of the organization."

Wouldn't it be extremly hard to play your best when you are on a team that is the joke of the league?

Yeah, Polanco had almost no impressive numbers other than his .341 average, his errorless season, his .400+ average with two strikes, two outs, and with running positions. Yep, nothing out of the ordinary here . . .

Jacgue Jones will have tons of power, tons of runs, and all of that stuff batting in this lineup. A fresh start with a fantastic team could give him that big boost to make the All-Star team. The AL doesn't have fantastic left fielders so Jones has a good chance if he can hit near 30 homeruns, 100 RBIs, and .300+ average.

Granderson has what, a 35-year old Ichiro Suzuki and an overated Grady Sizemore? Ichiro is getting older and might not get the steals and average he used to and Sizemore's stats are nowhere near superstar status.

Guillen should improve while playing 1B.

Any way you slice it, Willis is not likely to make the A.S. team. He's been in steady decline for a couple of years and is now going to have to face A.L. hitters on a daily basis.

Yeah, Polanco had a nice year LAST year when he made the team. Point is, that was a career year for him, not his typical season. Expect a regression to the mean, which is not A.S. worthy for him.

Again with the Jones thing. For starters, the AL doesn't have fantastic left fielders? Ever heard of Manny Ramirez, perhaps? And it doesn't much matter, after the fan selected starters are voted in, the manager can use any OF position player to substitute anywhere. Jones is 32 years old, been in MLB for 9 years, and has never sniffed an A.S. game. On top of THAT you are giving him numbers he's NEVER reached before. The last time he hit .300 was five years ago, he's NEVER hit 30 HRs or driven in 100...Not even playing Wrigley. Now he's moving to a pitchers park and you think he's going to have an offensive explosion?

OK, so the guy trying to convince me that Jacque Jones is going to be an all star now calls Grady Sizemore overrated? Come on, man

The Tigers are likely to send between 2 and 4 players to the ASG

guillen and pudge, thanks but no thanks

I think they could put up 5 all-stars, but I have to say that CCC takes this one.

Report Offensive Comment

Polanco, Verlander, and Cabrera are the only Tigers who will make the All-Star game. Pudge isn't a top 5 cathcer anymore, Sheffield can't stay healthy, and Guillen and Ordonez won;t have years like they had last year.

Report Offensive Comment

Pudge will make the A.S. merely because of his name. Polanco shouldn't get it with Cano, and Roberts, kinsler, Kendrcik all of which I think are better 2b. Curtis Granderson has to deal with Sizemore, Ichiro, Hunter and so on.
