Right now their #1 is reggie brown, who would probably be t leas a number 2 starter on most teams, and sometimes a number three. they have the potential to not only reach the playoofs, but reach the super bowl and a wide receiver is what they lack.

Reggie Brown had 61 catches last year. Thats good. Kevin Curtis had 71 catches. Good also.

The common logic is the Eagles need a WR. This is true to a point, but is not the sole reason for their becoming also-rans.

Look at the #'s. The Eagles receivers last year had statistically one their best seasons in 5 years last year. They combined for 190 catches and 2564 yards - the most from the WR position in these last 5 years. So how can you blame their missing the playoffs and Super Bowl solely on the WR position?

More to blame, could be the coaching staff's "dink and dunk" philosophy, particularly in the red zone. The Eagles are one of the worst teams in the league in converting Red Zone opportunities to TD's. A game breaking receiver does not help much in this area of the field. A physically dominant TE could be much more effective in these situations than a WR.

Forfeited Turn

Ok. Since I need the practice, I'll keep going as if I had an opponent who was trying. Lets say he made a good rebuttal to my argument.

While a big play receiver would not improve red zone efficiency, he helps you score from outside the red zone. True, but the Eagles didn't have much trouble moving the football outside the red zone. The Eagles were one of the top teams in drives over 10 plays, yards per carry, and in the top 1/4 in first downs.

The Eagles special teams units did nothing to help them out. No returns for Td's on punts or kickoff returns, fumbles, int's, or blocks. No non-offensive touchdowns whatsoever. How about a great Kick returner? That would help. How about a more reliable David Akers this year? Akers was not his efficient self last season - is it time to replace him? Here's a real good one - How about a dilligent trainer who can keep Donovan McNabb healthy for 16 games this season?

Philly has some good receivers. Obviously, a better one would help, but unfortunately not everyone can have one. A good team can win without one. Philly's problems run much deeper than just one good WR can help fix.

Forfeited Turn

Forfeited Turn had 0 catches last year for 0 yards. How is he going to help the Eagles get back to the Super Bowl?

The Eagles have some good wide receivers already, the best they can do within the salary cap. Kevin Curtis scored 8 touchdowns and had 77 catches. Although Reggie Brown struggled at times, he had a good 2nd half of the year last season and finished with 61 catches.

The Eagles have had no problems either last year or in the years past, getting the ball to their wide receivers.

A flashy WR signing would have helped their PR this offseason, but that alone won't put them over Dallas, NYG, and Washington in the NFC East.

So UNC if you're not here to make arguments this time should we vote for you anyways?

That was based on a comment from your last TD: http://www.fannation.com/throwdowns/show/145881

Maybe he's going to "argue" via interpretive dance?

If so, where's the YouTube link?

March 19, 2008  01:06 PM ET

Wow, all the eagles need to make the super bowl is a WR? Not a healthy QB, RB, coach with his head on football, being moved to a new division....

March 19, 2008  01:07 PM ET

I'm thinking that they do not need a bad wide receiver...

March 19, 2008  01:14 PM ET

How about another OK receiver that drops balls all the time?

March 19, 2008  01:15 PM ET

There are plenty of ways to argue against this. I'll avoid commenting on them until Thug makes his pitch.

March 19, 2008  01:27 PM ET

Correction: Curtis had 77 catches.

March 19, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Vote to Thug for the better of the 1st round of arguments...will change if warranted.

March 19, 2008  01:28 PM ET

The Eagles wide receivers are bad but they are getting better. Mcnabb is healthy again and they finished the season really strong.

Good job, Thug.

Curtis had 1100+ yards and was 8th in the NFL. How much more production are they really going to get from whomever gets brought in?

It's been recently proven that you can win without superstars.

THROW IT DOWN BIG MAN....THROW IT DOWN!

March 19, 2008  02:10 PM ET

a big play receiver does not neccesarily improve your redzone %, but he does help you have less red zone attempts by scoring from outside of the red zone, where coverage is generally softer.

March 19, 2008  02:29 PM ET

Thugmeister has this one well in hand. Anyone forget that they made the Super Bowl without a big play receiver? Yes, TO was on their roster but he was hurt and missed the entire playoffs. The Eagles won the NFC Championship game without him.

March 19, 2008  03:16 PM ET

Yes. I think they need good wr's bu tim just saying the ones we have right now are good enough. Now what we need to worry about is TE. L.J. Smith might not be playing this year.

March 19, 2008  03:17 PM ET

this is a dumb throwdown. That's like saying, " when a realy good team beats a really bad team the good team is better than the bad team " NO **** SHERLOCK!!!
