This is designed for an intra-division homer debate...so hopefully only Cowboys, Eagles, Redskins fans need accept.

I'm in a homer mood today. So today I'm here to make my argument that Eli Manning is the QB you want leading your team in the NFC East. Eli began his career in NY with much fanfare, forcing his way from the Chargers at the cost of (if the Giants drafted as the Chargers) Shawn Merriman, Philip Rivers, and Nate Kaeding.

Nobody was more down on Eli than I was. I have admitted to begging for a trade in the past. And obviously, upon winning the Super Bowl, I changed my mind. I reserve the right, as far as I'm concerned.

Its safe to say that Eli will give you 24 TD's, 17 or 18 INT's, 3,300 yards, and play all 16 games most (if not all) seasons. Those are roughly his career averages for his 3 full seasons. His completion % will likely stay around 57%.

With Eli, its more than the numbers. Often he has been criticized for his lack of fire, for his demeanor on the field. In NY such things cant be taken for granted. He never threw his team mates under the bus, however I believe the absence of Shockey helped him evolve as a QB. He is still only 27, and a SB champ.

Let me preface my statement: I AM A COWBOY HOMER. Born and raised in Dallas and of course will choose Tony Romo. I know he is the butt of many jokes becasue of the Seattle game and of Jessica Simpson but if you could take the cowboys out of your cross hairs for this TD it would greatly be appreciated. Also I will follow your format of not getting too "stat-sy" in the first argument.

I don't think I would want or expect Eli to "lead" my team. He is not that type of player. He is quiet, reserved and doesn't show much emotion on the field. Lets be honest, Shockey is his puppet master. In the huddle, Eli trembles at Shockey's presence for some reason...that is why he played so much better with Boss. And I believe that Eli falls under the Trent Dilfer category of SB Champs. His success was really do to the outstanding defensive performance of the Gints.

Romo's demise this past season in the playoffs was due in part to his WR's. TO not being 100% against an outstanding defense and Patrick Crayton dropping balls. Romo has had a season and a half of starting experience and still has really good numbers and accomplishments.

There are different ways to define leadership. The NY and national media villified Eli for his inability to show emotion, or take a team on his shoulders. He proved people wrong.

I'm not giving Shockey credit for being a puppet master. It had nothing to do with his input. It had to do with his route running and what seemed to be a lack of attention. Often, Eli would end up hitting Shockey in the back of the leg with a pass, and we'd kill Eli. It happened so often that perhaps Shockey is the real culprit.

His Super Bowl MVP had much to do with his defense, but can't we say that about many Super Bowl winners? Eli has been a solid 4th quarter QB, and what he did in the final moments of the SB this year was nothing short of spectacular. The players believed in him, and he, together with Tyree, made a play nobody believed could happen.

We can't keep coming up with a new reason for Romo's demise. 2 seasons now with truly ugly performances. You can't say that TO and Crayton COST him wins, especially when his 'really good numbers & accomplishments' are a direct result of HAVING a guy like Owens on his team. Eli delivered a title, together with his defense.

You judge Romo on less than 2 years of startin experience yet you forget Eli's first 2 years If your juding on less than 2 years of performace, you would of strung Eli up in time square and let everyone pelt him with stones based on his first 2 years of crap I had to watch of his play. Romo, with not even 2 full years of starting, has already become #1 in the following Dallas Cowboy Franchise Records:

Games with 300+ yards passing: 7; Romo already has 10 such games in his career, three short of Aikman's club record of 13

Passing TDs 36

Passing yards 4211

Completions 335

And is tied for the following Dallas Cowboy Franchise Record:
TD passes in a game: 5 (tied with Aikman)

Lets not forget about all the QB???s that have played in Dallas ??? Merideth, Staubach, White, Aikman, Quincy lol
He is also the second person in the history of Monday Night Football to throw 5 interceptions in a winning effort. Romo may be 0-2 in playoff appearances, but he has shown signs of progress every year which should be scary to other teams in the NFC East. If he has accomplished this much in such a short amount of time, what will he do next now that he has Garrett for another year

Eli was judged since day one. He's matured since, and been consistent in his approach to the game, win or lose. What have we seen in 2 Romo playoff appearances?

We have seen him get too nervous in difficult situations. We have seen him stray from his gameplan, down against the Giants, and eventually barking commands in obvious anger at his teammates on the field.

The Cowboys weren't just some team last year. They were projected Super Bowl contenders who played against - and beat - the Giants twice in the regular season. And yet the playoffs come around and they lose their way.

This is my focal point: Eli Manning turns it on in crunch time. He is known to do very well in the 4th quarter, he never wilts under the spotlight that is NY, he took a team that was good into the playoffs, on the road, against arguably the 3 best teams in the NFC - and then defeated an undefeated team that they had played just weeks before that. His statistics will never be outstanding. He won't be the $.e.x.y. pick.

Tony Romo can have all the 300 yard games he wants. And the line of succession matters little to me. In the NFC East, right now, I'd want Eli Manning taking my team to a title.

It has been less than 2 months since the Super Bowl and already most non-New York fans have forgotten about it. As historical as the win was for the Giants the win belonged to the defense. If you think Eli is clutch then God bless you...I hope you don't have any children with a college fund to bet on that next season. The Gints strength rest on the defensive side of the ball. If they are off their game ELI can't and will not get it done. Can you remember a game where his defense played so badly that Eli had to win the game for his team and actually did it...I cant.
Let me guess, you went out and bought a Dilfer jersey after the Ravens SB run as well too huh? Before you know it that fat bloated Lorenzen will beat out deer in the head lights Eli and he will be another sacrificial lamb to the NY media....I'm sorry I am still laughing with your comment about how Eli turns it on in crunch time.

He may have a ring but I would rather have Romo leading my team than that sorry excuse for a leader. What will become of the locker room when Strahan leaves. I can see Eli sitting in the corner while Shockey addresses the team. No one in that locker room looks up to ELI ..NO ONE!

Wow...moon is saving his Manning Awesome points argument for later....

March 20, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Haha...nah they will stay off the docket today rstowe...maybe I'll throw the Awesome Points in later.

March 20, 2008  09:43 AM ET

I didnt make much of an argument, admittedly, in round 1. I'm waiting to see what kind of comeback I'll face. I left it open for all 3 teams. It appears Romo will be the choice though.

March 20, 2008  09:44 AM ET

There's more than one Eli Manning. And Moonie chose the wrong one. Vote ---->

March 20, 2008  09:51 AM ET

ill take manning down the road, hes young and has already shown big game leadership and performance

romo is simply a below average qb who had the luckiest 1st half of a season in NFL history, he wildly threw pass after pass that you cant get away with in the NFL and did, too bad for him luck runs out

March 20, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Homer TDs!!!

Yay

March 20, 2008  09:54 AM ET

no donovan love??? the guy has the 3rd highest winning percentage of any qb since 2000. and 2nd best playoff winning percentage.. behind some guy named brady.. i know i know cant win the big one.. people used to say the same about manning.. truth is when donovan is healthy neither eli or romo can touch his effictiveness.. campbell doesnt even deserve consideration. and lets face it other than a very good playoff run the rest of eli's career is just not good. lets not forget trent dilfer led the ravens to a sb win.. now thats a homer statement!!!!

March 20, 2008  09:55 AM ET

The obvious choice is McNabb when healthy no one in the NFC is better. The NY defence and a lucky catch got N.Y. over. Dont get me wrong it was a great play (once in a life time), but mostly luck like the immaculate reception. I am a die hard Skins fan

March 20, 2008  09:58 AM ET

...when healthy

that is why i didnt pick mcnabb...he is never healthy

March 20, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Yeah thats a good idea, follow moons 'format'.

March 20, 2008  10:01 AM ET

March 20, 2008  10:02 AM ET

March 20, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Hahahahhahaha I remember that TD WIllis....

Dizz was still becoming acquainted with most TD'ers on Fannation. Made me laugh, a lot.

March 20, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Wow...and then there was 3. Looks like I'm not lookin good here.

Guys...I know people can vote after 1 argument...but 3 votes already? Yeesh.

March 20, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Moon, homers often cannot think rationally. Feel your forhead with the back of you hand, hot? Of course, you have a fever. Only a very ill person would take Manning over Romo. Why do you think they call manning 'el turd' in new york?

March 20, 2008  10:41 AM ET

I like to think that I'm a clear-minded homer. I don't sit here and pretend every team I like is good, or championship caliber. I'm just making the points I believe to be true. And besides, this was designed to be a homer on homer extravaganza.

March 20, 2008  10:52 AM ET

moon i may disagree with you but much respect for sticking to your guns and making a cognative point..

March 20, 2008  11:03 AM ET

Thanks. Part of this is punishing myself for my own previous Eli-hate. I simply think with his abilities and what he has shown us as a warrior on the road this past playoffs, even the Super Bowl aside, he is the best to lead a team in the future.

March 20, 2008  11:07 AM ET

obviously i dont want him to succeed but i do think people expected too much of him too quick.. at least now he has won.. which is more than anyone can say for romo..

March 20, 2008  11:07 AM ET

The best to lead a team into the future?

Oh god, you certainly provide a fellow with some good laughs!....
