This is challenge to a specific person, Buffalo Bandwagon Fan.
In your TD, you state that Anderson & Garrard is better then Brees. I'd love to see you explain why. Is this a Homer TD? Not necessarily, you specificly asked me to challenge you on this subject.
First off, I understand that stats dont tell the whole story. Since sports is all about statistics & the readers like to view them for comparason, ill post a few.
2007 Season:
Brees - 4423 yards 67.5% comp 28 TDs 18 INTs
Anderson - 3878 yards 56.5% comp 29 TDs 19 INTs
Garrard - 2509 yards 64% comp 18 TDs 3 INTs
No, I still dont see where you can say they are better. Anderson benefited from having a great running game as well as 2 PBers as his recievers. Because J. Lewis went on a tear last year it helped open up the offense & kept defenses honest. 70+% of his TD passes were between 2 people as well as over 54% of his completions. This means his success is due to Edwards & Winslow.
Garrard is 100% relying on his GREAT running game. The time he gets in the pocket should be credited to Taylor/MJD. His TD/INT ratio is out of this world, but can he win a game with his arm when called upon?
More to come

Brees vs Anderson
Derek Anderson owes his success to Derek Anderson. Charlie Frye was not on a path to the Pro Bowl because of Edwards and Winslow.
Anderson did throw for over 500 less yards than Brees, however he did not even gain the starting spot until half way through the first game. He threw 127 less passes, had a more consistent run game, and had to deal with much more difficult conditions. His production dropped significantly as the weather made the games run heavy.
Brees is in a pass happy offense and plays in an air conditioned stadium.
And the point of the TD to which this initially stemmed from, the ranking took into account the fact that Anderson and Garrard has youth over Brees and are clearly going to continue their progress and Brees has nowhere to go but down.
Brees vs Garrard
Garrard threw less than half the number of passes than Brees, 325 to 652. He missed 4 games, 1/4 of the season due to injury and sitting out. He also never once dropped below 80 in QB Rating, while Brees accomplished this dubious feat 7 times.
Both Anderson and Garrard did more with less, both lead their teams to the Playoffs, and both will be better than Brees in 2008.

Derek Anderson owes his success to Derek Anderson???
Derek owes his success to Edwards & Winslow. When you are throwing over half of your completions towards 2 guys & getting over 70% of your tds to those same guys, this tells us all you are dependant on those guys. Edwards & Winslow were AMAZING last year. Even Browns fans would tell you, see below, that they are the reason why Derek had his success.
Lets not forget the fact that they had a stud RB in Lewis last year. A good running game opens up the field for the passing game. What did Brees have? Bush? After losing Deuce, Brees had to create on his own. Spreading the ball & finding open recievers. Not just limiting his passes to 2 PBers.
QB rating? Is that all you can give me when comparing Garrard to Brees? Does anyone really care about QB ratings? They DO NOT tell the whole story of the game. As I stated above, David benefits from a solid running game & great O-line. Take out Garrard & insert Quinn Gray, what do you get? The exact same results. Quinn started 4 games & posted 986 yards 10 tds 5 ints. A product of a good system? I say DEFINITELY.
"Both Anderson and Garrard did more with less"
Seriously?!? lol

My vote will go to the Guru unless BBF can give an enlightening argument.
Im a Browns fan and I will be the first to tell you Anderson isnt that great and is a product of the Browns system.
He threw 55% of his touchdowns to B Edwards. Doesnt that seem like a MUCH too high number? Edwards did most of the work making spectacular catches while Anderson got too much credit for it. He had the TE with the best hands in the NFL KWII and a 1,200 + rusher. He benefitted greatly from his offense and most of all. The thing that REALLY pushed Anderson over the top was....
LT Joe Thomas and LG Eric Steinbach. The best left line in the game. When you have THOSE 2 guys protecting your BLINDside, you are in for a good season. 1 sack given up.

Report Offensive CommentThats the basis on my 1st argument Ef. Glad we see eye to eye. Anderson is a good qb, dont get me wrong, but he benfits from the Browns system. Hope Buffalo accepts. He asked me challenge him so I wanna hear his explanation

Report Offensive CommentI am a huge Browns fan and I believe that Derek Anderson may just have been a flash in the pan last year. Drew Brees is better than Anderson, however, I also believe that we soon will see Brady Quinn is better than Derek Anderson.

Report Offensive CommentYeah I think that Brees an elite QB in this league. Neither Anderson or Garrard are even close to that level yet.

Report Offensive CommentI'm going with Guru. Anderson didn't even complete 60% of his passes!
I think he's a product of the Browns system and Edwards and Winslow may have made him look better.

Report Offensive CommentDerek Anderson is mediocre. His rating was middle of the pack, he threw a lot of picks, and he lost critical games.

Report Offensive Commentvote to left for better arguments, but how the heck can anyone say anderson is a result of "clevelands system?" they have no system thats why until last year they were drafting top 5 for years. and jamal lewis made his season in just a few games. i think brees is much better and i like the guy, but if anderson proves this year he is no one hit wonder a true argument could be made for the guy. with him (and minus one game) they threw for 700 more yards than they did any time over the last 5 years.
b-dawk | 03/24/08, 02:05 PM
Report Offensive CommentB Dawk, when I say system I mean he has great offensive weapons last year. Edwards, Winslow, and Lewis made his numbers impressive. Edwards and WInslow gets all the credit IMO
