High draft picks that dont perform as well as expected......

I say Miner despite him winning the Slam Dunk Contest twice.......

Ferry played 13 seasons for Cleveland and San Antonio while being an integral role player......

He averaged 7ppg, 2.8rpg, 1.3apg in just 19.8mpg while converting 39.3% of his 3's......

Miner played just 4 seasons for the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavs, averaging 9ppg, 2.2rpg and 1.2apg in 18.7mpg......

He won a couple of dunk contests but decided to retire instead of playing overseas where he could continue to make money playing the game he loved......In addition he has spurned requests for interviews, leading many to believe he is bitter about his shortened career

I don't think it's really fair to compare Ferry - someone who's played 13 seasons to Miner - someone who's played only 4 season - because it's pretty obvious from career longevity that Ferry is not that big of a bust - but regardless, I'll have a stab at this one

To me, when measuring how BIG a bust is, you have to gauge what they were expected to do coming out of college

Danny Ferry came out from Duke - the storied BBall program that has a great list of college ballers - but in the end, you could say they produce one of the biggest batches of busts when their players turn pro

With the #2 pick in the 89 draft, the Cavs must've thought they were getting somebody pretty good when they selected Ferry - After all, they passed over Sean Elliot, Glen Rice, Nick Anderson, Tim Hardaway, Shawn Kemp, Vlade Divac and many other serviceable players just for this 'Stud' - in the end, Ferry couldn't even compare to Pooh, Mookie and other hacks that were drafted in the first round - but hey, they have more of a right to be hacks - they weren't drafted #2 overall like Ferry

A #2 overall pick busting is much worse than a #12 overall pick busting

Ferry had several good years for the Cavs.......

95-96:13.3ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.3apg, 45.9%, 39.4% on 3's......

96-97:10.6ppg, 4.1rpg, 40.1% on 3's......

When he came into the NBA who was he going to start over???

Larry Nance??? No

Hot Rod Williams??? No

This team had Mark Price, Ron Harper, Brad Daugherty.......

They drafted Ferry for depth and a solid 6th man

First off, no one was expecting great things from Harold Miner coming out of college

He was known as a streaky and inconsistent SG that relied on his athleticism to get his shot off - he had a lousy FG % - and he didn't play for a program as renowned as Duke

Being the #12 overall pick, he was expected to be good - but great? That's a stretch - after all, the #12 pick isn't even a 'lottery pick'

Ferry on the other hand - great things were expected of him - Sure he wasn't expected to start for the Cavs, but he was groomed to be a starter

Ferry was a versatile big man that could shoot the 3 in college - He was meant to be similar to what Nowitzki is now

In college, Ferry showed marked improvement every year - he had a 50+ FG %, was an excellent passer and a decent rebounder - He even won the Naismith award for college player of the year!! He should've been a sure thing...

Many teams fell in love with him, drooling over his potential/upside - So the Cavs went ahead and decided to plonk down the #2 pick on him and what did the Cavs end up getting in return? A huge bust!!

Darko Milicic is regarded as a HUGE bust - well - Danny Ferry was the original Darko...

Miner was being called "Baby Jordan".......He slipped to 12th pick, he was expected to go top 5-8.......

Covered him when I was working for a local newspaper and he was at USC......He was a phenomenal talent and the media was calling him another Jordan......Teams were drooling all over him and it was a complete surprise when he slipped to 12th and the Heat.......

Ferry WASNT a complete bust, he may not have been an elite superstar but he was a very good role player that didnt complain about his role......Every team needs them........Ala Robert "Big Shot Bob" Horry.......Only difference was Ferry didnt hit as many big shots......But they are a perfect example of what team players and role players are.......

A bust wouldnt last as long as Ferry did........

Busts like Miner dont and disappear from the public eye

No - You're mistaken - Miner was never expected to go 5-8 in the draft - The 92 Draft was too strong for Miner to be sniffing the top 5-8 - Miami was stupid to even take a risk on a guy that had nothing but hops

As mentioned before, Miner relied on his athleticism in college - once he couldn't do that in the NBA, he was a sure thing to fail - being able to jump high guarantees you nothing in the NBA

Ferry on the other hand was a big man - If you're tall and have any semblance of coordination, you'll always find some suitors in the NBA - Manute Bol, Shawn Bradley and Muresan ring a bell? Surely it wasn't based on their skill? As such, Ferry would always be able to find a team needing his 'skills' (or lack thereof)

13 years of averaging less than a quarter worth of playing time when you're a former #2 pick only enhances what a monumental bust he was

Feel free to look on the net - You won't find many 'Biggest Busts of all time lists' with Miner on it - while you'll find a few with Ferry on it

People were talking about Ferry as a potential HOFer with the chance to change the way big men played the game - The only HOF he belongs to is the one with the 'biggests busts'

Miner came into NBA on an awful Miami team

March 21, 2008  12:35 PM ET

It's obviously Baby Jordan. What a waste of talent. I'm going to hold my vote for now.

March 21, 2008  12:42 PM ET

Gonna wait for all the arguments. Both guys are making solid cases.

I mean, Danny Ferry had a better NBA career than Harold Miner (Miner is only remembered for the slam dunk contests, really). Miner only played 4 years in the league. On the other hand, Ferry was a #2 draft pick, Miner was a #12.

Holding the vote for the end of the TD.

March 21, 2008  12:45 PM ET

For me, it was easy to see that Minor was the NBA equal of what they call "AAAA" players in the MLB (too good or excel at the AAA level but not good enough for "The Show"). I never thought much of the hype.....nor much of Danny Ferry's hype at the time either.

At least Danny Ferry was relatively serviceable though.

March 21, 2008  12:51 PM ET

Of course Ferry had a better career - he played 10+ seasons - you can at least expect that from a #2 over pick, no?

When a #12 pick busts, it's a big deal - but not as big a deal as a #2 pick busting - and I think we can all agree that Ferry was a huge bust in this aspect - regardless of how long he played - no one expects as much out of a #12 pick as a #2 pick - and 10+ years of mediocrity on Ferry's part doesn't really save him from the dregs of bust-hood

Finish Saturday

Miner was being called Baby Jordan

LOL

Harold Minor

March 21, 2008  01:43 PM ET

No.1 pick is a No.1 pick

March 21, 2008  02:07 PM ET

Miner is on several biggest busts of all time lists

Just an FYI

March 21, 2008  02:09 PM ET

Yes - a 1st round pick is a 1st round pick - but a #2 overall lottery pick is way different from a #12 non-lottery pick

You often see teams trading 1st round draft picks with protection clauses in them - not many protect the pick all the way to the 12th pick - they usually protect picks within the top 10 - and there's a good reason why...

March 21, 2008  02:12 PM ET

When your nickname is Baby Jordan, you have lots to live up too and your expectations are high. He didnt even come close to that. BUST.

Miner is on several biggest busts of all time lists

Just an FYI

djroxalot: 9-1 in March

Please find me some lists that you've found online with Miner on them - below are two that I have found after a quick search with Ferry on the list - there's one that even ranks Ferry as a bigger bust than Sam Bowie - now that says something

http://journals.aol.com/gmen1201/top-ten..../entries/2006/12/29/ top-ten-biggest-nba-busts-of-all-time/953

http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/Draft/050612.htm

Notice how most of these players listed are lottery picks? No one really cares if a non-lottery pick busts - it's surprising but nowhere near as bad as a lottery pick busting

March 21, 2008  02:15 PM ET

With a nickname like "Baby Jordan", that isnt a bust???

He didnt give himself the nickname

March 21, 2008  02:18 PM ET

I'm going to vote to djroxalot.

March 21, 2008  02:19 PM ET

We're not arguing whether Miner or Ferry are busts - they are both busts

we're arguing which one is the greater bust

A #2 overall pick with nothing but 13 years of mediocrity is always shockingly worse than a non-lottery 1st rounder busting

Most lists naming the biggest busts of all time don't even list draft picks outside the top 10 - it's a bigger deal for a #2 overall pick to bust

March 21, 2008  02:23 PM ET

Vote to DJ due to this factor. 13 years in the league vs 4.

Any first rounder, regardless of # overall, who washes out after just 4 seasons, is a bigger bust than a guy who lasted 13 years, even if he was never a great player.

March 21, 2008  02:30 PM ET

Ferry wasnt a bust at all

NOT EVERY player is going to be an elite superstar

Ferry was a solid role player while Miner didnt even last long enough to get a label as far as a player

Yea ok - didn't you say you've seen Miner on lists of 'All time Biggest NBA busts'?? How's the search going? Not much success right?

Not saying you're wrong or I'm right - but do a few searches online - I guarantee more people think Ferry's a bigger bust than Miner - I guess they're wrong hey?

Trajan Langdon was drafted 11th in 1999 and was a draft bust
