make a team using only freshman, this year

pg- derrik rose
sg- eric gordon
sf- oj mayo
pf- michael beasley
c- kevin love

I'm only making one change.

PG- Jerryd Bayless

I like Rose over Bayless, obviously.

Rose is a better leader than Jerryd, carrying his team to the #1 seed in the South region. Rose's numbers against NCAA tournament teams:

-17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists against Oklahoma
-24 pts and 6 rebounds against UConn early in the year
-9 points and 10 reb's and 4 assists against USC
-18 points and 6 assists against Georgetown
-23 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists against Tennessee

It is obvious that he doesnt shy away from the attention in big games. That says alot about him, especially as a freshman, leading an almost undefeated team into the tourney.

Jerryd Bayless only contributes to his team in points. He's what you would call the "Baron Davis of College Basketball" is you want to put a label on him. He doesnt average much more points anyway, only 6 more than Rose, and Rose also averages more assists, rebounds, steals, and a better field goal percentage.

Another reason i chose Rose over Bayless is because Rose's team is still in the tournament. Rose is leading his team to a possible Final 4 berth and possibly a chance at a National Title. The closest Bayless will get to the Final 4 is if he watches it through the tube.

Those weren't all big games. Oklahoma, UCONN, and G'town were all beat byover 10 points and they even lost to Tennessee. USC was the only game that was close and the only stat worth noting in thet game was his 10 rebounds. Most of Rose's work comes in C-USA, which gives Memphis no challenge. He plays with an overall solid team which crushes almost all of the competition. Bayless on the other hand, is the leader on a team that plays UCLA, Stanford, Washington State, Arizona State, and USC on a regular basis. He was still able to lead his team to an NCAA tourney bid despite a pretty difficult schedule. They were also playing without coach Lute Olsen, who left at the beginning of the season.

It doesn't matter that Rose's team is still in the tourney. They played an easy schedule and got a 1 seed. It will be interesting to see how long the last in a more competitive environment.

Also, Bayless is a much better shooter than Rose. While his FG% is a litlle worse (about .1), his .410 3-point percentage is easily better than Rose's .337. He has also maintained this despite taking about 50 more 3-pointers than Rose. Also, he is even a far better FT shooter (.839 to .696).

True, they werent all big games, but they were against good teams. You even said it, Memphis beat OU, UConn, and G-Town by over 10 points, and those are good tems. So, Rose led his to team with good numbers...against good teams....and wins by more than 10 points.

I bet that if Rose played in the PAC 10, he would put up the same numbers. In Rose's non-conference games, he's averaging 13.2 points per game and 3.5 assists per game. That's only .8 points less per game and .5 assists less per game. So its not like he's doing SO much better and thriving because he's in the C-USA. Because he's not.

Yes, the C-USA is a easy schedule for Memphis, but the Tigers played a tough non-conference schedule. Playing teams like Oklahoma, UConn, USC, GTown, and Arizona got Memphis ready for the tourney.

I would take Derrick Rose over Jerryd Bayless any day.

Yes, but Rose has a good supporting cast. He has a great scorer in Chris Douglas-Roberts and Dorsey and Dozier are a good inside presence. As easily the best player on the team, Bayless was able to lead his team to an NCAA tournament bid. They would be nowhere without him. In the four games he missed, they lost 3 (the only win came against Oregon State, who as we know is one of the worst teams in the nation) each by a pretty big margin(13,10, 5). And of those games, only one was ranked in the top 25(Memphis). With Bayless they were a far better basketball team. He was their leader as the point guard of the team.

Also, Bayless was more consistent. Rose had many games against not very good opponents. While Memphis won all of these games, it was still apparent that Rose was not making quite the same contributions as in other games. He had 11 games with under 10 points, and 9 games where his turnovers outnumbered his assists. Bayless put up better numbers on a more consistent basis.

Overall, Bayless was a better point guard. He was a far better scorer. Derrick Rose only outnumbered in in assists by .5 pergame. Bayless was also able to lead a bad team to the dance.

No OJ?

Derrick Rose . no doubt is better than Bayless. but good argument on both sides

March 21, 2008  09:21 PM ET

No OJ. His thug life and ballhog attitude is better suited for the NBA than for college. He's one of the few players that I hope leaves for the draft after this year.

I have to vote to the right. A little better arguments in my opinion.
