College Rivalries are much stronger than Pro Rivalries

The only pro rivalry in any sport that comes close to a college rivalry is Red Sox/Yankees, but even then it's pretty obvious that it is not quite as strong as the good college rivalries.

Besides Red Sox/Yankees give me a rivalry NOW that comes close to Duke-North Carolina, Ohio State-Michigan, Texas-Texas A&M, Texas-Oklahoma, Alabama-Auburn, Florida-Florida State, South Carolina-Clemson, Indiana-Purdue, Kentucky-Louisville, USC-UCLA, USC-Notre Dame, Michigan-Notre Dame

The list goes on

How about Colts-Patriots? A rivalry with spectacular drama, two of the game's best Quarterbacks, and an ingenius coach in Belichick, eh? Some of the rivalries you mentioned are known only to the people who inhabit the city that college is in. And, half the rivalries you mentioned are with teams that have been average or worse in the past couple years. OOOHH, Indiana-Purdue-nothing gets me pumped like a matchup of 6-6 teams.Cubs-Cardinals, Cowboys-Skins, Bears-Packers, these are rivalries that are just as strong as ANY of the rivalries you mentioned.

Colts-Pats is up there but still it is not near the intensity of the matchups I mentioned. There is no way that any of the three you mentioned is even close to Duke-North Carolina in basketball, Ohio State-Michigan in football, Texas A&M-Texas in football. I expect the Professional sports bias from living in New York, no division 1 powerhouses closer than Penn State.

First off, I don't actually live in New York, I live in New Hampshire, and we have a ton of professional teams in New Hampshire. Perhaps you didn't catch my first response to you. Half of the rivalries you mentioned garner interest only from the people living around the area that college is located. Texas-Texas A and M gets interest from many people living in the Southern United States, but Colts-Patriots, Yankees-Red Sox, Cowboys-Skins, and others captivate viewers across the nation to watch. Yankees-Red Sox is bigger than every other rivalry in the States. Views for the ALCS Yankees-Red Sox games in 2004 were bigger than the USC-Texas Rose Bowl.

The intensity of Rivalries has nothing to do with the national scale. Also the high ratings for the 2004 ALCS wasn't because of the rivalry, it was because people wanted to see the Red Sox win.

Redskins Cowboys, Bears Packers, Chiefs Raiders just to name a few.

yankees-red sox is watered down, it gets more attention than it deserves

June 12, 2007  03:20 PM ET

Outside of Yanks/Sox none of the pro rivals can match college.

June 12, 2007  03:23 PM ET

I would say that the Colts-Patriots isn't an intense rivalry yet, because they've only been going at it for a few years, even though it seems longer. The NFL rivalries I would bring up would be Cowboys-Redskins and Steelers-Browns, but I do not think that they are as strong as all of the rivalries listed in college. The only thing that rivals Duke-UNC is RedSox/Yankees. Even with that, there is debate, and Ohio St./Michigan is right up there as well. It's all about matter of perception and preference. I perfer most college sports, so I am more apt to watching UNC/Duke in basketball than any of the big NBA rivlaries (if they exist). However, I MLB is more accessible, so I would watch Yankees/RedSox or Braves/Mets over any college baseball game (with the exception of UNC being in to CWS). This is a great throwdown, and I won't vote until I've seen all arguments, but I'm interested to see everyone's take on it.

June 12, 2007  03:24 PM ET

I just mentioned three in the NFL that are huge (or have been).

June 12, 2007  03:25 PM ET

Bears-Packers is the only one that has close to as much tradition as the college rivalries.

June 12, 2007  03:27 PM ET

Red Sox/Yankees is the strongest rivalry in all levels of sports. No college rivalry comes near it.

June 12, 2007  03:29 PM ET

alright ben you just lost all credibility on the subject by saying that Redskins-Cowboys is the greatest rivalry in sports. All of the NFC East rivalries are just about the same. Used to be the same thing with what is now the NFC North when the Lions were good in the 50's.

June 12, 2007  03:34 PM ET

i didn;t call skins boys the greatest rivalry in sports. sawx yanhks is.

June 12, 2007  03:39 PM ET

Ah, I never said it was the greatest...I said it was huge a huge rivalry and as you said all of the NFC East games are big rivalries, but Cowboys-Redskins stands out as the greatest in the NFL.

June 12, 2007  03:53 PM ET

Back in the day Celtics-Lakers

June 12, 2007  03:56 PM ET

Is USC-Texas considered a rivalry now? Why don't we just consider everytime a team plays another team, we can just call it a rivalry.

UNC/Duke vs. Red Sox/Yankees is a great argument for pro vs. college. because those rivalries ARE huge. every other rivalry, whether it be pro or sport, will wall short of those two. However, thus far, I'm thinking college gets the edge, because I cannot name another compeeling rivalry that I'm generally interested in in pro sports other than Red Sox-Yankees (this is discluding my own pro teams, of course). However, I am interested in college rivalries such as Ohio St./Michigan and the SEC rivalries, as well as USC/UCLA.

June 12, 2007  03:57 PM ET

Um how about the fact that every school rivalry involves every single thing that the schools compete in. Sure Duke vs. UNC the football version doesn't mean as much nationally as the basketball, but don't you think that the schools don't wanna win that game worse than most of the other matchups that year?

June 12, 2007  04:00 PM ET

that last arguement about the 2004 ALCS having more viewers than the rose bowl is completely irrelevant. USC and texas is hardly a football rivalry. If you are gonna take one of the best pro rivalries at its largest stage then take the best college rivalries too. if michigan met OSU in any bowl or unc and duke met in hte NCAA tourny it would be a much bigger deal than sox and yankees.

June 12, 2007  04:00 PM ET

Anyone who tries to compare Colts vs. Pats to just about any college rivalry should be slapped silly and kicked off this website. We're talking about a rivalry that has only popped up in the last 6 or 7 years vs. some rivalries in college that are A CENTURY OLD!

June 12, 2007  04:09 PM ET

I think Yankees/Sox is the only Pro rivalry that has lasted continously for over 50 years whether the teams are good or not.

Lakers/Celtics a rivalry now? Nope.
Cowboys/Eagles a rivalry 30 years ago? Don't think so.

June 12, 2007  04:43 PM ET

I like Army-Navy football game. To me, thats a great rivalry.

June 12, 2007  04:56 PM ET

do non college rivalry's steal mascots and make up songs and symbols of the opposing team strom the feild after wins or take down goalpost no point for jezi

June 12, 2007  07:02 PM ET

no way college rivalries are way better that why they have
RIAVALRY WEEK . . .

June 12, 2007  07:18 PM ET

college rivalries give one team bragging rights for a year...pro rivalries give one team bragging rights until they meet again 6 weeks later
