With their key offseason aqcuistions this year, i don't know if anyone can dispute this. With the siginings of Edgar Renteria and Jaue Jones along with the blockbuster deal that aquired Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera. Although the depth coul come into question, form right now, the tigers look like they could be dominating

I wouldn't start ordering your WS or LCS tickets just yet. And by "deep" playoff run, thats all you can mean. While their offseason acquisitions were good, they did leave them with some holes. Specifically, defensively. Cabrera is a rather weak fielder at this point in his career. Jacque Jones is also a somewhat atrocious fielder. So with Cabrera at 3rd and Jones in left, they better hope they don't go up against much right handed hitting this year.

Dontrelle Willis will be new to the AL and will have to learn to throw to 9 hitters instead of 8 this year, add to that his struggles the past 2 years and he is no guarantee to be effective. Their bullpen is weak also, and they did little to help that in the offseason.

So, while they look impressive offensively, over 162 games in the tough AL Central, they might be lucky to even find themselves in the playoffs, let alone advance to make a deep run.

If they can afford the plane tickets, hotel and game tickets to all those games....then, yes they will

"i don't know if anyone can dispute this."

That's the best part.

Well, somebody has to step up and take these things, before Goodell gets em. May as well be me.

Would someone PLEASE take a look at Willis career stats? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=5470
2 out of 5 seasons have been good. What makes anyone think he will fair any better in the AL with stiffer line-ups and no pitcher to give him a break every 9th batter.
Both Bonderman and Robertson are career sub .500 pitchers with eras in the 4.6 - 4.7 area code. Then there is Rogers at 43. How much do you really think he has left in the tank. Even Roid Roger wasn't the same at this age.
Zumoya and Rodney are neither one on the active roster and who knows when the will be or what you will get when they are.

March 25, 2008  02:07 PM ET

Thank you Coach...I've been saying that since the trade but nobody wants to listen.

March 25, 2008  02:23 PM ET

Actually Roger Clemens was better in a lot of ways at 43 than 37.

But you're right Zumaya and Rodney are the only good parts of their pen and they may not be there until after the all star break and who knows in what condition?

Willis is about as overhyped as they come. Robertson and Bonderman are .500 pitchers. Their career record is very reflective of their years with a 100 loss organization. Kenny Rogers arm is about to fall off, and it's only had moments of glory as is. Average rotation, no bullpen, very little defense, and a killer lineup. That sums up the Tigers in one sentence.

....okay, really it was more of a fragment, BUT STILL; they won't make a deep run, they might sneak in, but there are much better teams that will be in the AL pennant race.

If you've been saying it then I've been shouting it from the friggin' rooftops...

March 25, 2008  03:12 PM ET

I would agree that Bonderman and Robertsons sub .500 records in part reflect their time with the club when they were horrible however, if you take a look, their era's have remained fairly consistant, which i to say in the 4.00 and 5.00 area. While part of their records could be attributalbe to the team, they have much to do with their mediocrity as well.

My other Tiger questions are:
1. Ordonez had a career year last year with a career best RBI total and a batting average fully 51 points above his career average. What reason is their to believe that he will keep this up at 34 and 11 seasons?
2. Sheffield is two years removed from his last stellar season. He is 39 and been in the league 20 years. Why should one believe he has 30/100 left in him?
3. Renteria was a train wreck in his last stint in the AL, why is this time any different?
4. Your catcher is 36 with 17 years behind the plate, an old goat by a catcher's standards. Will he be in the line-up all year?

March 25, 2008  03:42 PM ET

Stop making these!

March 25, 2008  03:54 PM ET

The only thing working in Willis's favor is he should have a lot better team around him instead of the 10 million dollar payroll he had before, plus hopefully he's motivated. It'll be interesting to see him pitch this year.

cabrera had on a .002 difference in his fielding % over inge and only had 2 more errors so his defense shouldnt be in this argument
