Byron Leftwich should be the Jaguars' starter over David Garrard and Quinn Gray.

Leftwich, when he has been healthy, has always been an effective quarterback, and if you have watched him, you can tell that he has gotten better every year. In the Jaguars' first two games this year, Leftwich led them to huge victories, over the Cowboys and the then defending Super Bowl champions Steelers in a nationally televised game. Leftwich is a proven winner, and is one of the most determined and hard working players in the NFL. No one will forget his legendary performance when he was at Marshall, when Leftwich was hurt so bad his teammates had to carry him down the field so he could stay in the game. Last season, before his ankle injury, Leftwich was developing great chemistry with Reggie Williams. The combination of Leftwich to Williams will lead to a lot of Jaguars touchdowns with Leftwich at the helm. Besides that, Garrard has proved to be a turnover machine, and Quinn, though he has flashed great potential, is not as talented as Leftwich and lacks the experience of Leftwich. Leftwich will be more mobile this season because he has lost weight, so his game will improve just from that. Byron Leftwich will be a very good quarterback in the 2007 season.

I don't see Leftwich having any kind of good season. He has never completed a full season. He is either always injured or dethroned as the starter. He has never thrown for more 2,900 yards and his TD:INT ratio isn't all that good (I think it hovers around 1:1). One great performance in COLLEGE does not make a great NFL QB. He did nothing in the Steelers game, it was all field goals and he threw an INT that led to a Steelers field goal. Not a great performance in my opinion. Leftwich is not a proven winner. In his years as starter he has been a loser. He was injured most of the year when the Jaguars went 12-4 and was the starter for most of the season when they went 6-10 and 8-8. He is not the QB that Jack Del Rio thought he was when he drafted him. David Garrard, though he has a lot of turnovers, is much, much more mobile and has better accuracy, he also knows how to win unlike Leftwich. I still don???t think Leftwich will be mobile seeing as he has never been all that mobile. He also needs to shorten that release, it creates problems when he is about to be hit in that it can cause him injury if he lands strange or he could break his arm. In 2007, Leftwich will be riding the bench.

Saying Leftwich is not a winner is completely untrue. Over the last three seasons, he is 19-13 as the starter. In 2004, he was 8-3 as the starter, while Garrard went 4-1. All 4 of Garrard???s victories that season were against losing teams. His loss? Against the Colts. Leftwich's career TD to INT Ratio is 51-33, including his rookie year. Without his rookie year, it is 37-17, which is more than 2-1, twice the 1-1 that you said Leftwich had. Leftwich is good at taking care of the ball and each year has been on pace to throw more TDs than the previous year before injury derailed his season. Leftwich deserves to be the Jags??? starter because he has a chance to be very good. Garrard was good initially because other teams didn???t know how to defend him. Once they realized how to plan for Garrard, he instantly became ineffective. If you think Garrard should be the Jags??? starter because he is less injury prone than Leftwich, Leftwich lost weight this off-season, reducing the chance of him getting hurt, and all of his injuries so far have been freak injuries anyway. Also, Leftwich???s throwing motion isn???t going to cause him to break his arm. If it was going to, he would have already.

I don't think any of the current QBs on the roster should be the starter. They are all terrible, but the fact is, Leftwich is 24-23 as a starter in his career and Garrard is 10-7 as a starter in his career. Garrard has a better winning percentage, but barely. So Leftwich is a loser, in my opinion, moreso than he is a winner. If the Jaguars were to put someone behind center who could draw attention away from that insane running game they would be a very good offensive team. The fact that Leftwich re-injures that ankle he will be even less mobile than he was, weight loss or not. The likelihood of him actually succeeding in Jacksonville is low because of his medical records (he has never completed a season, missing a total of 18 games over four years not the kind of guy I want behind center). Also he has thrown 51 TDs compared to 36 INTs which is roughly 1.5:1 ratio; again, don???t want him behind center. He also never thrown for over 3,000 yards, but what can you expect when a guy can???t finish a season. His average completion percentage is 58.7%, which is decent, but not all that great when most QBs get up and over 60%.

Byron Leftwich is a winner, owning a 19-13 record since his rookie year, with one playoff appearance. Leftwich has already had successs in Jacksonville, and the Jags will be able to draw attention from their running game due to the continuing development of Leftwich to Williams, in addition to Byron being able to throw to Matt Jones and Dennis Northcutt. Leftwich has always had success when he has played. Garrard had success and then played miserably. Leftwich is truly a good player, Garrard is a player that teams just needed to see enough of to figure out how to shut him down. A 37-17 TD to INT ratio shows Leftwich???s success. Several factors point to Leftwich???s emergence this season. The general manger, James Harris, passed on Brady Quinn, which shows their faith in Leftwich, because no one knows what Byron is capable of better than the GM, who is hired to make personnel decisions. Also, when does a player lose weight, and then still get hurt? Never. Also, Leftwich is in a contract year, and players will often perform better in contract years, using the extra motivation to boost their game. Byron Leftwich will be the Jaguars??? starter in 2007 because he is the best QB on the team.

Leftwich is 24-24 (including playoffs) over his career. He has thrown 51 TDs and 36 INTs. Wherever you are getting your numbers it is seriously wrong BIG TIME! Garrard not only has a better win percentage but his TD:INT ratio is about the same as Leftwich's. But again, I'm seriously trying to find out where you are getting your stats from. I will reiterate my point that not a single QB on the Jaguars roster is good enough To start for this team. Actually, to tell you the truth, normally coaches know what a player can do best, not the GM. Another thing, you can???t say a player has lost weight and then NEVER gotten hurt. That is impossible when you look at the number of players that have played. Players lose weight and still get injured; injuries occur no matter how much you weigh. I highly doubt the Jaguars will resign Leftwich unless he has an absolutely stellar year and actually survives a season. You also talk as if the receivers he???s throwing to are Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison. Matt Jones is big, kind lanky and has the abilities, but is not really all that great as is Reggie Williams. Northcutt has never been all that great over his career; he will probably be the return man

None of them should really.

June 12, 2007  10:59 PM ET

hha good point...

ps jags fan vote for urself lol

June 12, 2007  11:01 PM ET

What's a good point? We both had long arguments.

June 12, 2007  11:09 PM ET

He has a rocket for an arm!

June 12, 2007  11:11 PM ET

But he is too injury prone and the release is much too long.

June 12, 2007  11:20 PM ET

He may have thrown an int against the Steelers, but NO FG... pittsburgh lost 9-0

June 12, 2007  11:23 PM ET

Oh **** thats right!! I completely forgot, my bad everyone. I'm really sorry for that mistake...****...

June 12, 2007  11:25 PM ET

he should definitely be the starter, and when he gets injured this year, Garrard should come in and hold down the fort. I have seen enough of Garrard as a starter. When healthy, Leftwich just gives them the better shot.

June 12, 2007  11:34 PM ET

Not really. Here are Leftwich wins totals each year of his as starter and Garrards in parentheses:

2003: 5-10 (0-1)
2004: 8-7 (1-1)
2005: 8-3 (4-1) Leftwich lost the only playoff game.
2006: 3-3 (5-5)
Total: 24-23 (10-8)

June 12, 2007  11:40 PM ET

Excuse me, Garrard didn't play in 2003, so let me correct that.

2003: 5-10 (0-0)
2004: 8-7 (1-1)
2005: 8-3 (4-1) Leftwich lost the only playoff game.
2006: 3-3 (5-5)
Total: 24-23 (10-7)

June 13, 2007  11:58 AM ET

Leftwich will get injured, plus Garrard is better

June 13, 2007  05:17 PM ET

bring in culpepper and Big Ben is never wrong

June 13, 2007  05:19 PM ET

Ooh, Culpepper would be a great pick up for this team. They would have a big gun under center (one who doesn't have a hugely long release) and he will be able to zip it in there to those huge receivers.

June 13, 2007  06:13 PM ET

Who the **** is voting on this?!?!? They obviously don't know what the hell they are thinking!!! Jagsfan doesn't even have his stats right...

June 13, 2007  06:27 PM ET

Big Ben knows his stuff =)

June 13, 2007  06:27 PM ET

Damn straight!

LOL

June 13, 2007  06:49 PM ET

You're right Big Ben, you kill the other guy in the argument, how are you losing?

June 13, 2007  06:50 PM ET

Then vote for me League!!!

June 13, 2007  07:49 PM ET

The only flaw, Ben, was the miss about the PIT at JAX game. I was there. Just horrifying. Crazy Jags fans started chuckin' beer bottles at me and I got ushered out by security.

Oh, good argument too. Very solid, and I think Byron Leftwich should have been returned to sender a long time ago. There's a reason they are looking to bring in Culpepper guys. That reason is the team has no ability to judge a quality quarterback.

Yeah...I still can't believe I messed that up...I even watched the game on Monday Night Football!
