Miguel Batista, Erik Bedard, Felix Hernandez, Jared Washburn=hood

I will say the Mets.

FHernandez can be great, but has yet to prove that he can be consistent by compiling 2 solid seasons back to back. So far, it's been one or the other.
Bedard, a good K pitcher who can be dominant at times but wether he'll be able to recover from his injury is something to consider. So far, a lackluster spring training. Both have great ERA's as they streamline the Mariners staff, but after that, you will have mediocre pitching at best. The rest of their starters are abysmal:

Washburn: 10-15, 4.32 ERA, not that great of a pitcher
Batista: 16-14, 4.29 ERA above .500 record, but a high ERA
Silva: 13-14, 4.19 He is experimenting with a new cut fastball and thus far no success.

Now, how can you call the M's pitching staff the best when they have 3 mediocre starters with a high ERA of over 4. Other than FHernandez and Bedard there's really not a whole lot of talent or depth. Not a whole lot of stock thereafter. It is lopsided.

After Santana and Pedro, here's how the rest of the Met projected starters fared last year.

OPerez: 15-10, 3.56 ERA
Maine: 15-10 3.91 ERA
OHernandez: 9-5, 3.72 ERA

From that,Mets are more solid top to bottom. Lower ERA

Forfeit huh.

Well, I am going to expatiate a bit more on the Mets staff. Just wanted to clarify one thing, I'm not implying that the Mets have the best pitching staff in baseball because there are a lot of solid rotations out there. But what I am arguing is that the Mets do have a better rotation than that of the M's. I am providing the stats and argument to support it in the process.

Mets have a solid 1-2 punch in Santana and Pedro.Their 3-4 starters in Maine and Perez can be effective as any 3rd or 4th starter. Each had 15 wins with a sub-4 ERA. For many pitchers in the majors, that's a heck of an accomplishment.
Overall, Mets' rotation exhibit more balance, consistency, and depth. Santana is one of the best, and Pedro although past his prime can still be effective. If El Duque makes the rotation, all 5 starters had winning records LY, and all have posted an ERA below 4. That's impressive.

Mariners: 2 starters w/below 4 ERA. Mets have 4 starters, 2 of whom are former 2 CY award winners.

LY, M's overall team ERA was 4.73. The Mets: 4.26. Significantly lower. Although Bedard might help bring that down this season, I can say the same for Santana who's a bigger impact.

Good Luck kevincampbell.

UHH METS??
Red Sox Beckett Dice-K Buckholtz Lester Waikefield
Yanks Wang Pettite Hughes Kennedy Moose

I did have the RedSox in mind as well Girardi but decided to go with the Mets anyway. I think they are still better than the Mariner's rotaion though.

March 27, 2008  11:01 PM ET

Its the diamondbacks. Come on guys...

March 27, 2008  11:03 PM ET

Red Sox? They prove their overratedness once again.

How bout the INDIANS? Yeah, they're pretty good.

March 27, 2008  11:04 PM ET

B Webb= Top 5
Dan Haren= Top 10

Then you have Randy, who when healthy, is basically unstoppable. Doug Davis will give you 15 wins, maybe fifteen L's too. And Micah Owings is developing into a solid pitcher and is aready the best pitcher with a bat.

Mets. ----------------------->

March 27, 2008  11:59 PM ET

Just for dramatic purposes...I'd have chosen the Jays.

And I'd have won the argument (but maybe not the vote).

March 28, 2008  03:09 AM ET

Both of you have the wrong people. The Indians do have the best pitching rotation, so does Pittsburg, Diamondbacks are also great. San Diego good as well. All of those are better than the two you chose.

March 28, 2008  07:53 AM ET

Don't forget Cleveland

March 28, 2008  08:12 AM ET

I'm a Mets fan, but El Duque will not be on the starting rotation. It will most likely be Jorge Sosa.

March 28, 2008  08:30 AM ET

good work Kevin.

March 28, 2008  09:29 AM ET

Cubs had a great staff last year ERA-wise, as did basically all the teams in the NL West.

March 28, 2008  09:38 AM ET

D*dgers could have the best rotation by the end of the season.

March 28, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Nice- the Angels lose John Lakey and Kelvim Escobar early in the season and all the M's fans come out of the woodwork suddenly assuming they're going to the world series or something. Just like the Tigers and Mets- you have to prove something, you don't get a ring for making a trade. Last time I checked the Angles beat the M's in their division, the Tribe handed the Tigers their ****, and the RedSox took it to everyone. And the M's have far from the best rotation. Tribe, RedSox, D-Backs, Mets, and Padres... Hell the Rays have a better 1-2-3 punch then the M's once Kazmir is back in a week or so in Tampa- Kazmir, Shields, and Garza?! Yeah- far from the best. More like one of the better, but no means the best.

March 28, 2008  09:50 AM ET

so it's not verlander - rogers - bonderman - willis ? I beg to differ.

March 28, 2008  09:51 AM ET

A Fact: Are those Angles accute or obtuse?

March 28, 2008  10:12 AM ET

The Tigers rotation is deep 1-5. But look at their era's. They all aren't exactly sub-4.00 besides Verlander.

March 28, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Dontrelle Willis?

'Cubs had a great staff last year ERA-wise, as did basically all the teams in the NL West.'

NL West...weakest hitting division in baseball (minus the Rockies of course) might have had something to do with the ERAs being so low :-)
