Create the best soccer team based on the following rules...

Rules:

1) You may chose only 1 player per country for the list (example: no Pele and Ronaldo)
2) Any era is fine / living or dead
3) Must have primarily played the position you assign (for example, you can't put Beckenbauer as a striker)
4) List your formation

4-4-2 with staggered mids

My team:

G - Lev Yashin (Russia)
LB - Elias Figueroa (Chile)
CB - Franz Beckenbauer (Germany)
CB - Franco Baresi (Italy)
RB - Jaap Stam (Denmark)
LM - George Best (Northern Ireland)
CDM - Bobby Charlton (England)
CAM - Diego Maradona (Argentina)
RM - Michel Platini (France)
ST - Pele (Brazil)
ST - Johann Cruijff (Netherlands)

Not much to argue as I don't know what I'm going up against so I'll simply discuss my reasoning behind some players left out.

England: had to go with Sir Bobby over Moore and Banks
France: Zidane is a close second to Platini in my books
Germany: Beckenbauer is my favourite player & Klinsmann & Mueller are all second choices
Denmark: Sorry Schmeichel, Yashin is just better.
Netherlands: van Nistelrooy and van Basten are second class to Cruijff
Italy: Faschetti was 2nd choice to Baresi

More to come

GK-Peter Schmeichel (Denmark)
RB-Paolo Maldini (Italy)
CB-Bobby Moore (England)
CB-Franz Beckenbauer (Germany)
LB-Elias Figueroa (Chile)
RM-Johan Crujiff (Netherlands)
CM-Diego Maradona (Argentina)
CM-Michel Platini (France)
LM-George Best (N. Ireland)
ST-Pele (Brazil)
ST- Hugo Sanchez (Mexico)

Maldini I just changed the side. Crujiff Played Wing as well as striker. Sanchez is one of the greatest strikers of all time. Staam is Dutch so you broke your own rules.

My bad on Stam. If you allow me to change it I will choose:

Rafael Marquez from Mexico / Spain.

Schmeichel vs. Yashin

I stated above that Yashin is better than the Great Dane but allow me to explain why Yashin is better. First, the trophy awarded to best keeper is called the Lev Yashin award because he is the best.

Proof: Yashin was awarded the European Footballer of the Year Award in 1963. This award is usually granted to strikers and midfielders. Aside from Oliver Kahn NO other keeper has won this award. FIFA granted Yashin the title of Greatest Keeper of the century--not Schmeichel. The number 1 keeper in the world is Yashin.

Cruijff DID play wing but not half as much as striker. He is KNOWN for being a striker like Jordan is KNOWN for being # 23 so that kind of breaks my rule too. Plus, he is more effective as a striker than Sanchez. Cruijff is considered by the best soccer players in the world to be the greatest striker in the world... even more so than Pele. He was voted as footballer of the century by FIFA.He was European footballer of the year 3 times--to Sanchez ' 0. This awards were his STRIKER, not WING awards.

Crujiff is listed as a CAM/Midfield player he is officially a Midfielder. You beat me a GK but My midfield is set better as Crujiff is a better Mid than Charlton. Plus Bobby Moore beats Franco Baresi and Maldini beats Marquez and to top it all off Marquez is a CB not a RB.

Cruijff is a striker first and foremost man. Check his listings. He wreaked havoc in the World Cup as a striker.

So you admit Gk defeat--excellent.

Bobby Moore beats Baresi? How so? Baresi is considered by many to be the greatest defender of all time. He was an anchor in the walled defence of AC Milan in the early 90s. Moore is considered the best in England simply because he was part of the '66 England squad that won the WC. That's a fantastic accomplishment but certainly a TEAM and not an individual effort. England hangs on to the Booby Moore days because they have no WC. Italy is known to have the best defenders in the world and to be considered the best in Italy is something special.

Marquez vs. Maldini

Backs are backs when when it comes to positioning. For example, Maldini is a CB and an LB but never a RB as you have him so don't be so hard on this. Marquez has nowhere to go with up in his career as he is still playing. He plays in Barca which is one of the best teams in Europe.

Moore is also considered one of the best defenders of all time.

Now to Maldini vs. Marquez

MAldini is a much better defender than Marquez. He has accomplished a lot over the course of his career and he's still going strong Maldini will always be a better defender then Marquez. Maldini is playing ion Ac Milan which is also one of the best teams in europe.

Can I change rb's to CB's

March 28, 2008  02:04 PM ET

Tough.

March 28, 2008  02:55 PM ET

FCB82: your list is very good, but you made a mistake.

You put:

RB - Jaap Stam (Denmark)
ST - Johann Cruijff (Netherlands)

Jaap Stam isn't Danish, he's also from the Netherlands.

^ Dealt with by the other TDer--rectified in my second argument. HOWEVER, he has Cruijff as a winger when his pre-dominate position was striker. That too was part of the rules.

What about that girl from Bend It Like Beckham?

March 28, 2008  03:15 PM ET

^ She's the towel girl.

Seriously though,

I don't know enough about the history of soccer to compete in a Throwdown based on its' history....I first started by watching the World Cup in '94 and only really started watching club soccer this decade.

March 28, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Good to know. I guess you'll have to base it on arguments then. Or not vote at all but the arguments should be strong enough... i hope.

March 28, 2008  04:21 PM ET

Johan Cruff (sp?) was enough for me FC. You get the vote.

March 29, 2008  08:51 AM ET

I don't know a lot about soccer either but going by the arguments (which is as it should be) voting left.

March 29, 2008  10:13 AM ET

HOWEVER, he has Cruijff as a winger when his pre-dominate position was striker. That too was part of the rules.
FCB82 | 03/28/08, 03:11 PM

First, it is "PREDOMINANT"... WHY does everyone persist on this site into trying to use "dominATE" in such a manner? It is incorrect... but not enough to stem my vote...

In the Dutch "Total Football" system (and @ Ajax), Cruyff (Anglicized spelling) was nominally listed as a striker. Yet I can easily understand what Crappo is saying here... with players constantly moving "out of position", Cruyff the striker often was seen blazing down the wings or through the midfield as much as he was a pure striker. I'm going to allow both of you to keep him in respective position without penalty...

I would've taken Eusebio over Sanchez @ forward, Crappo... and I would have preferred more than the dearth of argumentation you offered us. FCB82 is getting my vote based on stronger arguments...

(But you should've known better about Stam! ;-)

Im taking Marquez over Maldini.
