This is getting out of hand. I don't know what the International Steroid Convention Committee (aka IOC) was thinking giving the Olympics to a country like China. Here are 3 good reasons the US and all other countries should boycott the 2008 Olympics.
1. Communist state. Again, why are we going to support a communist country? Didn't the US kill thousands of innocent people in Vietnam over communism? Now we are helpign out a communist country's economy by sending over athletes. They won't let journalists criticize the government. Do we want to hold the world's 2nd largest stage in a place like that?????
2. Tibet. Why don't we hold the 2016 Olympics in Darfur? 2008 is already being held by terrorist and genocidal countries. Tibet has been under genocide for over 50 years now by the People's Republic of China. It's time we take a stand and boycott the Olympics and help end the tyranny of China in Tibet.
3. Pollution. The air in China will kill athletes. I guarantee you athletes, probably from the marathon, will have lung problems soon after. I know someone who will probably be competing in the Olympics. It would suck mightly if she got sick from the air in China

You're talking as if our athletes attending the Olympics somehow implies that the US supports the moves China is making. The athletes may represent the United States, but anyone with half a brain knows that just because we're giving our athletes a shot for a medal doesn't mean we advocate what the Chinese are doing.
We are helping the Chinese economy? Us being there as opposed to us not being there does not make a huge impact on the Olympics, when you consider the number of countries that attend. And again, we are not supporting communism just because we're attending. This is politics...
...which also leads to your Tibet comments. Boycotting won't help them. Remember when we boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics because the Soviets invaded Afghanistan? If I recall correctly, there were plenty of other countries that boycotted, and this had almost no impact on Russia, or what they did in regards to Afghanistan. If you think boycotting the Games will have much impact on Tibet, think again...
You are talking about potentially ruining these athletes' chances to compete. In four more years, they may not be able to do as well, or even compete. This is their chance, not the government's.

Of course us being there makes a huge difference. #1 we are the world's largest market, so that means we will most likely supply the most tourists from the western world and that menas business get boosts. If the US leaves, I don't think Mali can make up for the lost profits of tourists.
Sending athletes makes us support them. The USA is being represented at the Olympics, held by a genocidal and tyrannical country. Anyone with half a brain knows that politics are just as important as sports for the Olympics. Look at the '36 Berlin Olympics. The primary objective of HitIer was to support Nazism. A gathering of all the world's country has to include politics.
For a long time the genocide in Tibet was unknown by most Americans. With the protests, more and more people are learning about the genocide. If the US would pull out and say directly because of the Tibet situation, then there would be more knowledge on Tibet
The Olympics are an old sporting event that means nothing now. None of the world's major sports (basketball, baseball, soccer, rugby, cricket) have a major stake in the Olympics. This is the perfect stage for a protest, and this is the perfect way for it

You do realize that the China of today is not the same as the China of 30 years ago, 20 years ago, even 10 years ago? Ever since Deng Xiaoping's economic reforms in the '70s and '80s, China has moved away from a Stalin-esque Communist rule to a much more liberated society. Diplomatic relations with them have also become better. What type of message will boycotting send? It will make almost no difference in Tibet, and will completely undo decades of relations. I'm not saying it will lead to WWIII, but it helps not at all.
For us to do anything about Tibet, we have to give China a real ultimatum, that they have to stop or we'll sanction them and perhaps use armed forces. Pulling out athletes does nada. And we also can't have a double standard -- if we help Tibet, we have to help other genocides which we are doing almost nothing about, such as Darfur, or Kurds in Turkey (one of our allies).
Also, in response to your '36 Olympics point, we did send athletes to **** Germany. Does that mean that we supported them? Was the US in the '30s a **** sympathizer? Based on your arguments, if we go there, we agree with them...right?

dont bring politics to Fannation. cause it could get nasty. Plus remember one thing, we have to support China, because when you look in the back of a good percentage of the things you buy what does it say? Made In China, and its also a Communist country which looks like is going to change to democracy soon

Sure. It's going to change to democracy. Just like Russia has changed. Putin didn't appoint a successor at all. He didn't poison dissedents either.

Are we talking about what Putin has done, or what Russia has done? Because they're different.

I wouldn't count on China becoming a democracy any sooner than Iran. That being said, however, I believe China is our country's largest money lender and without them this country would be broke. Boycotting the Olympics only hurts the athletes of the country doing the boycotting. It changes nothing.

"Do we want to hold the world's 2nd largest stage in a place like that?????"
Yes? I WOULD like to keep the world's 2nd largest stage in a peaceful state, thank you very much. So, because they're socialist, you want to become enemies with them for the sole reason that we did the same in Vietnam (which was clearly a huge mistake)? That's...an interesting concept you have there.
If we're going to be enemies with them, then do it for your 2nd and 3rd reasons.

@ Irish - I'm Chinese and I have to say you're retarded - I assume, despite your user name, that you're an American
It's Americans like you that give the rest of America a bad name - it's people like you that always look to throw the first stone
I don't for one second condone China and their history with Tibet but there are few things that need clarification
#1 - China is by no means a Communist state anymore - They are Socialist and even then, that's a stretch and they are such only in name - If you are unaware of the differences between Communism, Socialism etc - I suggest you do some reseach and then ask yourself if China still complies with traditional Communist or Socialist states
#2 - I assume your outrage over Tibet was exacerbated by the recent protests? If you weren't such a lemming and actually looked into it - you would have found that the Chinese government, for once, got a raw deal from the Western media over Tibet - The protests, on the part of the Tibetans, were by no means peaceful - if you head to www.anti-cnn.com - you will know what a horrible job the western media has done in reporting this incident
Lastly - you should realise that no country is perfect - I am Chinese and I grew up in the west - I am always judgmental of China because they've screwed up plenty in the past - I also always champion the US as a bastion of all that is good - but you should ask yourself - is the USA perfect? I could hand you a list of all the deplorable things the US have done historically and I am sure there are countless others covert actions undertaken by the US that not many know of
The Olympics is all about putting aside political and cultural differences for a few weeks and bonding with each other through the commonality of sports - I wouldn't hold it against any nation wanting to boycott the Olympics - but picking on China when basically every country (especially the US) commits mistakes is stupid and puerile
I implore you to at least get your facts right lest you show how stupid you are - either that or you should, to be fair, start some TDs highlighting some of the great faults of the US - or do you think that the US is perfect while every other nation is a rotten apple in the global community?

The only logical argumentation from Irish so far has been his third point, one which has largely failed to be addressed here: POLLUTION...
You want to know what the Beijing air will do to highly attuned athletes? Check this article out...
http://www.helium.com/tm/646764/september-staged-olympic-preview
Also, here's something else I wrote about boycott:
http://www.helium.com/items/654324-certain-arguments-supporting- boycott
A boycott will do nothing to alleviate the political problems of which you speak, Irish... but it WOULD protect the health of the athletes... voting to the right due to more sound argumentation...

Whatever, China still dumps crappy products on the world market and hurts the global economy. To me that???s worst than communism/ socialism because that affects me. Frankly, I could care less how other countries want to treat their own citizens, but screwing with the global market by "dumping" is wrong. I just hope no one on this sites kids had to play with lead paint toys.

Bigalke, this is what I could find on pollution:
"Concern has been raised over the air quality of Beijing and its potential effect on the athletes.[c] Although the Beijing Municipal Government, in its bid file in 2001, committed to lowering air pollution, increasing environmental protection, and introducing environmental technology,[98] research data show that even if the city were to dramatically cut down its emissions, pollution would still drift over the neighboring provinces,[99] from which 50 percent of Beijing's air is believed to originate.[100] At current levels, air pollution is at least 2 to 3 times higher than levels deemed safe by the World Health Organization. Marco Cardinale of the British Olympic Association has stated that air pollution coupled with heat and humidity makes it "very unlikely we'll see outstanding performances in endurance sports."[99] Despite this, Beijing, in its commitment to improve air quality, will remove 60,000 taxis and buses from the roads by the end of 2007 and plans to relocate 200 local factories, including a prominent steel factory,[99] before the games begin.[100] The Chinese government has provided assurances that "blue skies are a requirement not only for Beijing, but also for the places around it."[101] The United States Olympic Committee has also expressed its assurance that the air quality of Beijing will not be a concern for the U.S. delegation to the games.[102] Nevertheless, recent medical research by the IOC suggest air pollution could pose a risk to the health of athletes.[103]" (per Wikipedia)
Now, I know that this is certainly not a plus for athletes, but it is obvious that China is doing everything it can to lower pollution levels. I don't see this as grounds for a boycott anyways. We should help them lower the levels, rather than threaten to boycott over something they (currently) have little control over.

They have already shutting down the factories over there before the games and saw the air quality improve drastically.
Aren't we pass the hatred for communism yet? Its just a form of government. Read up on it before you start hating on someone for being communist. Communism doesn't mean the citizens aren't free or have civil rights. Stop reading your propaganda BS. As stated above China isn't communist anymore anyways. It has become a socialist country.
