No crystal ball crap fellas....OK??? Based on production (last season obviously) AND POTENTIAL!!!

No Order

1) Seattle - Lofa Tatupu...Julian Peterson....Leroy Hill. Solid Core top to bottom

2) Dallas - Demarcus Ware, Greg Ellis and company will have another good season

3) Green Bay - A.J. Hawk, Nick Barrnet and Brady Poppinga. IF and I do say IF... The packer make the playoffs, you can thank these 3.

4) Baltimore - Ray Lewis, Terrel Suggs, Bart Scott.....and CO. As long as Rex Ryan is the DC, Baltimore WILL be the most feard D in the NFL.

5) Buffalo - Hahahahaha......Yeah Right....But wait. Angelo Crowell, Kawika Mitchell, and the Monster formally know as Paul Posluszny....Looks like the REAL DEAL to me...

I think you're pretty hypocritical when you say no crystal ball **** and then say potential, but nevertheless, here are my linebacking cores

In No Particular Order

1. New England Patriots- Say what you want about age, but these groups of linebackers are still pretty damn good(and damn near perfect) Seau, Vrabel, Bruschi, and Adalius Thomas are more than solid linebackers

2. Baltimore Ravens- I know the team was afwul last season, but its hard to make up for having ancient McNair or awful Kyle Boller at QB: Jarret Johnson, Bart Scott, Terrell Suggs, and Ray Lewis are a pretty fearsom foursome

3. San Diego Chargers- This group has two of the best linebackers in the league: Matt Wilhelm, Stephen Cooper, Shaun Phillps, and Shawn Merriman

4. Chicago Bears- This team had a very disappointing 07 season, but like the Ravens the Bears had an awful offense with no QB, a bad Cedric Benson, and no real receiving threats: Hunter Hillenmeyer, Lance Briggs, and Brian Urlacher

5. Green Bay Packers- A very young, talented group that was oh so close to going to Arizona last January: Brady Poppinga, A.J. Hawk, and Nick Barnett

President Bush just signed legislation to prevent teams from double teaming Seau and Teddy B. He said it was in the best intrest of America to keep these guys unscathed. After all, they were the Bomber piolits who dropped the Bomb on Hiroshima....They also were second in command on Christopher Columbus' 15th century voage to dicover the new land

The Bears lost production last season on D for one simple reason. They thought they were the best in the NFL. They bought into thier own hype....Just like Ryan Leaf. Now im not comparing Urlacher and Briggs to Leaf, just stating what happens when you belive what the media is writting about you and you BECOME COMPLACENT.

SD - What really happend to the production of Merriman?? Was it really the roids?? Looks like it......But you got to remember, this is based on POTENTIAL as well....

Crowell had 120+ tackles, 2 INT, 2 Sacks....Add in a HEALTHY POZ....SB Champ Mitchell, and you have the making's of one helluva LB core. Better then the Bears?? Yeah, but its only because they have a better D line in front of them. Ever since they lost thier DT's the D in Chi-town has been struggling to say the least....

I don't really see the connection between the worst QB of all time in Ryan Leaf, and outstanding linebacker in Briggs and the best MLB in the NFL. The Bears didnt buy into their own hype, they had no offense whatsoever, and it finally caught up to the defense, which carried that team for years. Grossman/Griese/Orton are bad quarterbacks, Benson looks like a bust, and who the hell did the Bears have to throw to, Mushin Muhamed, Berrian? On top of that they lost several important players along the way, two starters on defense in fact. Like I said before, the Pats may be old at linebacker but their corps is still an elite group in this league, you don't go nearly perfect without some good linebackers. Sure Merriman dropped off from 06, but thats what happens when you have a monster season like he did, he gets much more attention placed on him. I'm not so sure why you are so high on the Bills, Poz has proven nothing so far, and Crowell and Mitchell are decent, nothing special. There are several corps I would take over Buffalos

"I don't really see the connection between the worst QB of all time in Ryan Leaf, and outstanding linebacker in Briggs and the best MLB in the NFL."

Let me try to be a little more clear...The Chicago D was dumb enough to listen AND buy into what the MEDIA was saying about them. Just like Ryan Leaf...He bought into the media hype and forgot that you actually have to work for things. The Bears were the best D in the NFL the season before last and they were riding that into the 08 season. Even with a few injuries, and every team has em...They were SHELL's of thier former selve's. THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT....

The Pats are no longer a ELITE group....****?? The only reason they even posted decent numbers last season is because they were ahead by 30 points at half time. That pretty much ELIMINATES the run game from their opponents game plan....Making thier opponent 1 dimesional. Not that the D was that great, but when you know they have to pass all game, makes things a little easier

Remember, this is about potential as well....Not just last season. Poz may have been one of the Best LB's ever to come out of the LB factory known as Penn State.

Everybody hates on the Patriots linebacking core because they gave up that last touchdown drive to the Giants in the Super Bowl. Lets say that Jarvis Green actually sacks Eli, or Harrison bats that miracle pass down, then the Pats win the Super Bowl, go undefeated, and all this talk about the linebackers being completely washed up is never even brought up.
Also, what is with this insane theory you have about the Bears buying into their own hype. You cannot underestimate what the Bears defense had to deal with the entire season, a very pathetic offense. The Bears only weapon is Devin Hester, who is primarily a kick/punt returner.
Sure Poz has potential for the Bills, but are you honestly saying that the Bills linebacking corps is one of the five best in the entire league? I don't think so. San Diego's is much more talented than Buffalo's. I would take Merriman and Phillips over the Bills three linebackers any day.
The Cowboys I'm not so high on either. Sure Ware is great, but Ellis isn't anything special. I would not put Dallas into top 5 status either

Actually, the GB LB corp consists of: Hawk, Barnett, and Justin Chillar or Brady Poppinga. Chillar was recently signed (from St. Louis) and is likely to be in on running and short distance downs while Poppinga will play a pass rush LB on 3rd & distance.

oops, Brandon Chillar, not Justin....not sure where I got Justin from.

Goodell, give up on the Bills!

And Trent Edwards will NOT be a Top 10 QB...

The Bears didn't become complacent Goodell, they became injured. Why do people keep overlooking the fact that they lost two defensive starters in the first game against San Diego alone? They were so injury riddled they had to sign undrafted ROOKIE free agents to come in and play noseguard. No defense can overcome key players going down every week, especially one that has a terrible offense as a counterpart.

April 1, 2008  01:22 PM ET

Wouldnt potential be considered crystal ballish?

April 1, 2008  01:24 PM ET

both lists have flaws... this has to come down to arguments... bears over bills and anyone over patriots.

April 1, 2008  01:25 PM ET

No SD Goodell? I know people hate Merriman, I am one of them, but his numbers are still impressive post Roids.

April 1, 2008  02:56 PM ET

lol.....Hey lynch, we got 25 more days.....WHOOOAAAA!!!!

April 1, 2008  03:25 PM ET

Ravens aren't top LB core any more, but def. top 5.

Why do you say they became complacent? Maybe it's just me, but I didn't see the media all over the Bears defense last summer. Could you give some examples of how they bought into what the media was saying?

Also, even if what you're saying is true, this TD is about next season. I really think Briggs is going to play better after finally getting his longterm deal done, and Urlacher has had corrective surgery this offseason to fix his back problems. (Even with them he still put up great numbers.) Add in a quietly solid Hillenmeyer and that's a damn good linebacking core.
