No rivalry in sports is better than it.

They hate each other and just love to try to beat each other. It is a rivalry between the players and the fans. And it goes bact to more than 100 years ago ( or close to that).

I will take the Boston Celtics vs. The Los Angeles/Minneapolis Lakers.

First of all, part of what makes a great rivalry is the time in which the games are played, i.e. regular season, late regular season, playoffs. Obviously the Yankees and the Red Sox cannot play each other in the world series, but they have only squared off in the playoffs 3 times, all three in the ALCS.

The Lakers and the Celtics have played each other in the NBA Finals 10 times, with 4 of those series going to 7 games.

"They hate each other and just love to try to beat each other. It is a rivalry between the players and the fans."
Arent all rivalries things where the teams love to beat each other? The Celtics love to beat the Lakers; the Lakers love to beat the Celtics. The fans love the rivalry to.

Although the Lakers and the Celtics rivalry has cooled down a little bit as of late because of how terrible the Celtic have been in recent years, there is a decent chance of the two teams meeting in the NBA Finals this year, you never gave a time period so I will go back to the Bird-Johnson years.

You got two of the premier players in the league (both can be argued the best) matching up for the finals. morel8r

After I looked in the comments, I realize that they Yankees vs. Red Sox isn't the best rivalry in sports. But nither is Boston vs. LA. The Rivalry may have died down in the past couple of years, but it still is one of the hottest rivalrys in sports.

ok... so if you admit that I guess this TD is kinda pointless.

we both think that our arguments are bad... I should not have gone with celtics lakers, so I dunno.

I didn't say that it wasn't a good rivalry, though.

What about Duke and North Carolina thats a heck of a rivalry

April 2, 2008  10:50 PM ET

yeah it is but i don't think it would be the most intense in all of sports

April 2, 2008  10:56 PM ET

michigan vs ohio st. ?

April 2, 2008  10:57 PM ET

I was thinking Michigan-Ohio St or Duke-North Carolina.

April 2, 2008  11:00 PM ET

Both have died down over the years.

That said, the Yankees- Sox game has more tension than LA vs. Bos.
There aren't those big Rivalries in the NBA anymore (except one, LeBron vs. Pistons)

April 2, 2008  11:15 PM ET

I also would have to say that the UNC-Duke Rivalry is probley the top!!!

April 2, 2008  11:33 PM ET

I was thinking duke UNC but all o the finals appearences changed my mind.

April 3, 2008  12:35 AM ET

Well, the MEDIA definately pushes the Yanks-Red Sox rivalry...

April 3, 2008  12:54 AM ET

I'd go back to the Bill Russell/Jerry West era to argue the Lakers/Celtics.

April 3, 2008  06:42 AM ET

If this is all I have to compare, yanks/sox, but the best in all of sport, no way.Mich - OSU, Duke - UNC, and a few others I'd list first.
Maybe the best in all of baseball.

April 3, 2008  06:50 AM ET

AMERICAN sports, yes. World? No. That honor goes to Rangers-Celtic.

April 3, 2008  07:54 AM ET

both are not the best.

Bears vs Packers.

Mets vs Cubs

Duke vs UNC

================================================================ =======

They also cannot play each other in the ALDS as they're in the same division. So they can ONLY play each other in the ALCS. So you're suggesting that it's not the biggest rivalry based on MLBs playoff structure?

April 3, 2008  09:35 AM ET

Giants vs ******* d*dgers.

April 3, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Its obviously Yankees - Red Sox, which goes to show when the guy on the left spits out the rivalry and nothing else - and leads with 5 votes.

April 3, 2008  10:01 AM ET

SKINS - Cowboyz still a great rivalry usually with playoffs at stake

Boston/LA 20 years ago? Possibly, but not now...
