The NBA has had a lot of talent come in and then not play and end up spending their whole career on the bench. In the NFL teams value their picks more and play them and let them make something of them selves not all of them of course. But the truth is that NBA draft produces more busts. Yearly the NBA draft will produce about 5 or 6 b??sts in the draft.
BSchwartz07 said 04/03, 02:53 PM
You have got to be kidding. The NFL has 7 rounds, the NBA has what, 2?
But to show you how wrong you are I'll take the 2003 NFL draft class. They just finished their 5 year in the NFL, so they should be just hitting their stride. Instead here are 12 guys that were taken in the 1st round that haven't done ANYTHING in the NFL.
#2- Charles Rogers, Hasn't played since '05, 440 Career Yards
#6- Jonathan Sullivan, Hasn't played since '05, 1.5 Career Sacks
#7- Byron Leftwich, Started 8 games since '05, just cut by ATL, and nobody is calling
#12- Jimmy Kennedy, Only 1 season as a starter, played in 3 games last year, started 0.
#14- Michael Haynes, 4 career starts
#15 Jerome McDougle, 0 Career Starts
#19 Kyle Boller, currently the Ravens' 3rd string QB
#22 Rex Grossman, only 1 full season as a starter, last season posted 7 INT to 4 TD
#25 William Joseph, 17 starts in 5 years in the NFL, has played in 3 games since '05
#28 Andre Woolfork, NEVER been a starter 12 starts in his career and 3 INT
#30 Sammy Davis, 3 Career INT, has started 6 games since '04
#32 Tyler Brayton, 6 sacks in 5 years, not too great for a DE.
This is just 1 round!
Crappo said 04/03, 03:43 PM
Ok as an example I will use the 03 draft class as an example.
There were 14 players unable to make anything of themselves.
Mike Sweetney
Jarvis Hayes
Mickael Pietrus
Marcus Banks
Luke Ridnour
Reece Gaines
Troy Bell
Zarko Cabarkapa
Aleksandar Pavlovic
Zoran Planinic
Travis Outlaw
Brian Cook
Carlos Delfino
Ndudi Ebi
That's 2 more in 3 less picks.
On average these players are averaging 3.1 ppg.
The NFL players you listed at least got to play NBA draftees usually start on the bench and stay on the bench. In the NFL Draft there is 32 picks in the NBA draft there is 30 picks. So there is a bigger chance of there coming a bust out of the draft.
BSchwartz07 said 04/03, 03:55 PM
Well lets see here.
-Pietrus- 7.1 PPG 3.7 RPG, so he may not be a star, but he is still playing.
-Outlaw- 13.3 PPG 4.5 RPG
-Cook- 5 PPG 2 RPG
Those are just 3 of the names you gave. These guys are 6th men and such.
In the NBA only the first 5 to 10 picks are EXPECTED to actually become a starter or change a team. From there the middle to late first round picks are supposed to be 6th men, or bench fillers. So I don't think these guys are really "busts" the are doing what people thought they would do.
In the NFL guys in the first round are expected to become HUGE additions to a team while 2nd and 3rd round guys are expected to fill in and become role players that start.
The guys I have shown should have done NOTHING, the guys you have are doing what is expected of them.
You can say that the "average" of your guys are putting up 3.1 PPG, well the "average" of my guys have not even seen the field in 2 or 3 years.
The guys I have shown should have done NOTHING, the guys you have are doing what is expected of them.
Crappo said 04/03, 04:28 PM
That's just one draft class if you look into the history of the draft in both leagues you will find that there are more busts in the NBA then NFL. Now, to Millicic although he may be starting he is starting for one of the worst teams in the NBA. When he was drafted people acted like he was a savior. He failed to start and did not accomplish anything. He averaged 1.7ppg and saw about 5-7 minutes on the court.
Let's just look at some past busts in the NBA.
Just to name a few
Kwame Brown 1st overall.
Michael Olokwandi 1st overall.
Len Bias 2nd overall Died from Coke overdose less than 48 hours after being drafted.
Dennis Hopson 3rd overall got arrested after threatening to kill his wife.
Sam Bowie 1st overall drafted ahead of MJ, Sam Perkins and Charles Barkley.
Rick Robey 3rd overall Drafted ahead of Larry Bird.
These are just a few there are plenty more.
BSchwartz07 said 04/03, 04:48 PM
HA, that's all you got? You have to throw back to the 80's?
Here are the 1st round QB's that have flopped since 2000
Vick
Carr
Harrington
Ramsey
Leftwich
Boller
Losman
On to the 1st round RB's
Ron Dayne
Michale Bennett
TJ Duckett
William Green
Chris Perry
Kevin Jones
Cedric Benson
And the WR's
Peter Warrick
Travis Taylor
Sylvester Morris
R. Jay Soward
David Terrell
Rod Gardner
Koren Robinson
Fred Mitchell
Ashley Lelie
Josh Reed
Charles Rogers
Mike Jenkins
Rashaun Woods
Matt Jones
Mike Williams
I could go on, but there is only so much room.
CRAZY, you have to throw back to the 80's to come up with 6 busts, I didn't even go back past 2000 or use more than 3 positions to get 29 guys.
Still think the NBA has more busts? I have 12 more positions.

You have five starters in the NBA. You have twenty-two in the NFL, not counting special teams. So if the NBA has exactly four times as many busts, they would still win it percentage-wise.

I don't know where that logic comes from leech.
The way I see it is that each NFL team has 7 picks (before trades and such), chances are that only 2-3 of those guys actually make a team. That makes for 4 wasted picks PER TEAM every year.

why do they even have that many rounds in the NFL Draft?

There are more noticed busts in the NBA, because there are LESS busts. There aren't as many noticed busts in the NFL, because there are more.

Unless they're super high-profile guys like Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Tim Couch, etc.

NBA drafts are just more obvious, because there are less spots available on an NBA team. They carry what, 12 players? so there are very few slots to fill.

Crappo, Darko STARTS!!! and you have another guy that is putting up over 13 points a game!
ALL of my guys are COMPLETE scrubs. Of them the majority are either on practice squads, way down on the depth chart, and haven't seen the field in YEARS! Your guys see the court EVERY NIGHT!

Just because you don't hear of many of the players after the draft, it doesn't mean they're busts. There are just so many positions and so many specialty players that no one is going to get that much attention besides the big names stars.

I wouldn't say Jarvis Hayes is doing nothing. He's been a key role player off the Detroit bench.

True, BS, but Darko was taken over some good players, including Dwayne Wade. How good would the Pistons be today had they taken Wade instead of Milicic? They would probably have more than just 1 title now.

Does that necessarily make him a bust? Or just not as good as others? I see a bust as doing NOTHING, Milicic is a starter, which has to mean he is doing something right, so I wouldn't jump the gun and claim him as a bust, you know?
