Dallas Cowboys would be better off in a 4-3 Defense.

Dallas would be much better off in a 4-3 defense than a 3-4. This way Ware would be rushing on every play. This would also allow Dallas to rush the passer better.
Here would be the new front seven: (Reasons for each move in next arguement)

LDE: Anthony Spencer (Ellis would play here in passing downs)
LDT: Chris Canty
RDT:Jay Ratliff
RDE: DeMarcus Ware

LOLB: Akin Adoyele
MLB: Bradie James
ROLB: Zach Thomas

Absolutely not, for one major reason: with Ware at OLB the offense doesn't know if he is rushing or dropping back in coverage. That is the biggest reason for any team to run a 3-4. Ware is also athletic enough and fast enough that he can drop in to coverage, and he is a greater asset to run defense from the OLB spot.

There is also the issue of if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The Cowboys were the best team in the NFC last year until they ran in to the Giants miracle run. It certainly wasn't the 3-4 defense that cost the Cowboys that game, and there is no reason to think they won't be just as successful next year with the same defense.

When running a 3-4 it is important to have A) a solid DT and B) LBs that can stop the run. The Cowboys have both of these things, and it worked pretty well last year. There is no evidence that a 4-3 defense would be more effective.

DeMarcus Ware should be rushing the passer on every play. You are not going to fool anybody when he blitzes. Dallas is only hurting themselves by sending ware out in coverage. There are many LBs that can cover as good as Ware can; there are few Lbs who can rush as good as Ware can.

While the 3-4 works fine, our Defense can not win a game own its own. In a 4-3 I think our Defense could be one of the best in the league. While we have a great offense it would be nice to have a great D as well.

Pass Coverage is a major weakness of the 3-4. If ine of the ILB blitzes and the RB goes out for a pass to the other side, it is impossible for for the other backer to get all the way out there and cover the RB. When ware is in coverage, teams can double Ellis and Dallas has one of the worse pass rushes in the league. But if Ware and Ellis are both rushing on every play, Canty and Ratliff are not doubled and can bring a better rush. As far as for if it aint broke dont fix it, Dallas has not won a playoff game in a 3-4 defense in a long time. Its time for change; dont bring about the point about Dallas knot winning a game with the 4-3 b/c Dallas stunk the last time they ran one

Ah, I get it. You are a huge Cowboys fan and are looking for ways to get better. Well, rest assured, the Cowboys will be back at the top of the NFC again next year and the Packers will probably not be a threat either.

You claim that pass coverage is a major weakness in the 3-4, but in fact it can be a strength. I don't believe that the offense knows the defensive play call, so how would they know which side to send the RB to? Ware has also bee a more effective pass rusher from the OLB position, getting more sacks and pressures. This may be due to natural developments, but I doubt it.

He is also, as I mentioned, a greater asset to the running defense in the OLD position, which is just as vital as rushing the passer. With him on one side and Thomas on the other it will be very hard to run on the Cowboys.

You don't change your defense every time you lose a playoff game. You state that the Cowboys haven't won a playoff game with a 3-4 in a long time, but when was the last time they won with a 4-3? Yeah, probably during the Triplets era. They've had a solid defense for some years now, and it's largely due to the Tuna's implementation of the 3-4 defense. Keep it.

Yes Ware has more sacks at OLB, b/c every time he is a DE it is a undoubted passing situation. If he played DE full time he would be very successful. Remember, he was drafted as a DE out of Troy who Dallas wanted to convert. He made a name for himself in college by sacking the QB. Dallas would get alot more production in the 4-3 out of Canty and Ratliff. They would not be doubled as often, therefore leading to more oppurtunities for sacks. To me this is more of maximizing talent than changing defenses. The Giants won the SB with a great pass rush, and in a 4-3 Defense I think Dallas would have a greater oppurtunity to win a SB if they ran a 4-3.

Ware doesn't stop the run well from the DE position, which is why he didn't play it every down. If he is a good pass rusher and a poor run stopper from the DE position compared to a good pass rusher and a good run stopper from OLB, and everyone else is roughly equal, why change anything?

What he did in college is nearly irrelevant, as many players switch positions. Derrick Thomas went from DE to OLB, for instance, and became very good.

The Cowboys best pass rush comes from the 3-4 because the offense doesn't know where the blitz is coming from. The Giants ran a 4-3 because Osi and Strahan are natural DEs and would be ineffective at OLB. Ware is more effective at OLB and should stay there.

There is no need to change the defense in Dallas. A 4-3 would make Ware one-dimensional and damage their run defense while having only a minimal impact on the pass rush. You have yet to address the run, which is more important in the playoffs. That is why Ware needs to stay in the LB corp.

Damn my computer at work. I tried and tried to get this one. But good argument. ---->

It's all good. Just win it.

Ware is a beast. No reason to confine him. Let loose the dogs of war!!!

I agree RobertMenn, that is why he must rush on every play.

But if you keep them guessing, it will be better for the defense. I like you arguments though. This will come down to the end. But I'd rather put him where he's needed.

Some LB's have trouble adjusting from 3-4 to a 4-3 or vice versa. As with the case of Jonathan Vilma. Hopefully, he'll revive his mettle with the Saints.

I agree with keeping an offense guessing. Ware has too much talent just to confine him to rushing the passer. He can also pick off the ball and disrupt the running game. Move them around. Keep the offense on its toes. If they spend too much time looking for Ware they're going to make mistakes elsewhere. Once we shore up the secondary, this defense will be THE force to be reckoned with. And, yes, I am "THE" Cowboys fan. Well, at least the oldest one here.
