I'm going to pick DC United.

They're the two-time reigning MLS Supporter's Shield winner, which is given out to the best team in the regular season, they made it to the semifinals of last year's CONCACAF Champions Cup (where they will participate again this season), and also made it to the semifinals of the SuperLiga.

United has the reigning MLS Golden Boot (given to the player who scores the most goals in the season) and MLS MVP winner Luciano Emilio, along with another member of the MLS Best XI (like the All-Pro team in football), midfielder Ben Olsen. United also has 2006 Best XI members Jaime Moreno and recently added Argentinian midfielder Marcelo Gallardo, who's started on such teams as River Plate, AS Monaco, and Paris Saint-Germain.

Lastly, DC United is the only team to have won more than 2 MLS Cups since the trophy's inception in 1996, winning four of them in their 12 year history.

Taking the easy pick. I like that style, but it is not going to happen.

The team that has the best shot at the Cup this year is going to be Chicago. Now I absolutely hate Blanco, but the guy knows how to play. And he actually has a supporting cast who is good enough to make it happen.

At the back, Busch is going to have a great season. He has been injured the past few years, so he is off people's radar, but remember in his last full season as a starter, he took the crew (the CREW!!) to a supporters shield.

On the back line, Guiterez is a solid, veteran defender. Other defenders to watch out for are Segares, Conde, Prideux, and Brown. Great back line.

In the midfield, joining Blanco are Justin Mapp and Chris Rolfe, both National Team members, and perhaps the best wing combo in the league. And Pause and Armas are both going to be solid as DMs this year.

Up front, the Fire picked up Frankowski, who is capable of posting 15+ goals this year as he is a big target forward that Mapp and Rolfe should be able to play balls into very easily. The 3 other forward spots are filled by committee with Nyarko, Carr, and Herron filling in nicely.

The easy picks would have been the Revolution, who've been to the final two straight years, or the Dynamo, who've WON IT the last two years. This was not the "easy" pick you make it out to be.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco is good, yes, but the Fire don't have the complimentary pieces to go with him. I'd rather have Blanco than Gallardo, but Gallardo has more to work with, and the talented Luciano Emilio (who's the reigning MVP of MLS no less) is one of them.

You're saying a team that does committee playing will be good? In baseball, closer by committee almost never works, and doing soccer teams by committee is worse, because with a closer, he only has to have chemistry with the catcher, whereas in soccer, you have to have chemistry with at least the midfielders and the other forward, if not the side backs too. Switching players constantly doesn't allow for that chemistry to be formed.

The Fire barely squeezed into the playoffs last year, and as a testament to how decidedly average they were, they were one of only three teams in the then-thirteen team MLS to not have a player even win a player of the week award once during the year, along with expansion Toronto FC and the Colorado Rapids.

I agree a team by committee doesn't work, but this is not your normal committee. These are all forwards that could be starting at many of the different teams in MLS. And we are only talking about one position. It is a good thing to have players fightining for the staritign spot. Competition for positions yields success. The only reason I say DC was the easy pick is because they are the popular team this year by the media. But american media generally doesn't know squat about soccer. DC is picked to win the cup almost every preseason by the media.

Last year Chicago was one game away from the MLS cup. They lost to NE on an amazing goal by Twellman. But they outplayed NE the whole game and should have made it to the cup.

Last year was too little, too late for Chicago. They really started playing well too late. It took until midseason for them to really peak. With a full season to work together, expect Chicago to be really good this year.

Not having a player be awarded player of the week doesn't mean much either. This game is not about the player, but the team. DC does not have the bench that Chicago does. DC is not deep enough to make it through their long season.

What do you mean DC United's not deep enough to make it through the season? They've done it each of the last two years when they've won the Supporter's Shield. Even if that was true, we're not arguing about the Shield, we're arguing about the MLS Cup. There's only a few games for that, and the less games that are played, the less the depth matters anyways.

Closer's only one position. Like striker, it is usually one of the most important, and so my parallel holds true.

How many forwards are you planning on starting on this team? By my count, you've got 4, that's an awful lot. I think that you either misspoke, or you've completely forsaken any chance at the Fire playing defense.

The team barely snuck into the playoffs though. They didn't play as a team either. They don't have enough to get to the top in today's MLS.

The other teams that didn't have a player of the week were Toronto, which was honorable mention last season in the MLS and Colorado, who were 10th in the MLS. There's most definitely a correlation between the lack of players of the week and how good a team really is. Even the best "teams" have stars. Houston has De Rosario and Ching, the Revs have Joseph and Twellman.

Nobody is trying to start 4 strikers. I didn't ever say that. I actually indicated that they would have to compete for playing time.

DC is not deep enough to make it through the season. They are good enough to win games in the regular season, but they wear out at the end. You mention the last two season as proof. But in both of those seasons they got eliminated in before even making it to the Cup. Same thing will happen this year.

Have you really watched any games this year. DC does not look good. Even in today's match against TFC they looked bad. I know they won big, but that was against a ten man Toronto side. Their midfiled is not strong enough, and their defense has too many holes on the sides. All it takes is a decent cross to put a ball in the net against DC.

But my post is not to argue against DC, it is to say why Chicago will win it (which is something I didn't catch in your last post). Chicago is a better road team. Everywhere they go, Blanco's fans show up and often cheer louder than the home team's fans. DC has good home support, but the support on the road is not good enough to propel them to victory. And since the final is at the HDC, Chi has the advantage.

Good luck in your first TD Mike.

Ive lost my first four throwdowns, its allright if you lose your first

April 5, 2008  07:21 PM ET

Thanks Hemo. Good luck to you.

April 5, 2008  11:48 PM ET

Nice TD Mike. I've seen a lot of people do a lot worse on their first than you did.

April 6, 2008  12:02 AM ET

Blanco will lead the Fire to the Cup.

April 6, 2008  12:31 AM ET

Thanks Hemo. Unfortunately, I couldn't predict my team, RSL, to win it all. But here's hoping!

April 6, 2008  12:44 AM ET

I don't have a team, Eintracht Frankfurt hasn't joined yet.

I live in Oregon, so I support the 'Quakes on the count that they're closest.

April 6, 2008  12:54 AM ET

Dynamo would have been the easy pick. While I believe Chicago have improved they don't have the depth to go through as MLS Cup winners.

April 6, 2008  12:55 AM ET

Hemo...

Frankfurt ist schiesse. :)

April 6, 2008  07:16 AM ET

The one big problem with Chicago is Busch. I used to love the guy and I thought he was one of the best. But I just don't see that any more. He had some very shaky moments against the Revs and I think he may eventually cost them. As for DC United, they also are a very strong team, but I just don't see them winning the MLS Cup. Yeah, they'll probably win the Shield, but not Cup.

Hemo...

Frankfurt ist schiesse. :)

*****Anmd by the way, I have to agree with FCB82. Frankfurt aren't very good, and Bayern are.

This was a very tough pick, but im gonna have to go with Mike. Chicago are to be more feared I believe than DC United because of the creative brilliance of Blanco. Yes they lack some pieces, but DC also have some holes as well. Both with very good arguments though. nice TD

April 6, 2008  01:07 PM ET

This reminds me of my TD about the FA Cup. I had Portsmouth going the final but I lost cuz a lot of ppl thought West Brom would beat them. You know what, Portsmouth won.

Both of you guys have great arguments. I know DC is an easy pick. I see Chicago as inconsistent during the regular season but I think they'll be feared in the playoffs. REMEMBER: unlike the other foreigners in the league, Blanco knows how to play in a playoff system (Mexico has a playoff system for its league). I still have to think about this. Great TD

April 6, 2008  06:07 PM ET

I was hoping for a really wild pick, like Kansas City, who looks pretty dangerous from back to front. DC is pretty obvious, but Chicago is no slouch either. At this moment I am picking the longer shot, which is Chicago. I like how Blanco plays, and everyone seems to be on the same page. DC should contend, but they always contend.

April 6, 2008  08:12 PM ET

Houston wins the last two, how does one of you not pick them?

April 6, 2008  09:55 PM ET

Stronger arguments from hemo than from Mike_E... the right conceded too many points to the left... I'd prefer to see the Columbus Crew (Crew, you ask? Without a team in my region growing up -- I CANNOT root for any Denver teams, just won't happen -- I picked the first team to build a soccer-specific stadium...), but I have more faith that DC United will win the MLS Cup than will the Chicago Fire this season after reading this throwdown...

My vote is going to hemo on the <<<<<<<<<<<<<

Crap. I picked the wrong weekend to be busy... Wizards game, watching the Final Four, first game of my soccer team's season today (we won 4-1), and out to dinner....

Tough call on the MLS, I wouldn't hazard a pick right now (unless I was forced to... in which case it would be ***************
