The Phillies will make the playoffs. True or False and Why?

The above statement is completely and utterly false. The Phillies will not make the playoffs. The Phillies don't have starting or bullpen pitching, have a strong offensive lineup, and play in a tough division. Same scenario as last year? Yes, but they made the playoffs last year. So why won't they this year?

-While Eaton so far is looking better, Moyer is looking worse, and Myers is looking horrible. Hamels and Kendrick look like last year which is good. But it will not be enough to balance the other starters.

-Aaron Rowand's Departure- I underestimated his impact. I thought who needs him anyway, we still have J-Roll, Howard, Utley, Burrell etc. Even after the acquisition of Jenkins, his bat can't match Rowand's. Rowand was able to protect Howard, hit right handers well, and play outstanding defense. He is sorely missed.

-Tom Gordon- This guy is not a closer at the major league level anymore. Enough said.

-Sloppy Defense- 7 errors in 5 games? Not good. And the amounts of sloppy plays that weren't errors? At least double!

More reasons to come. (Trust me there are more.)

I will take that as a true statement. The phillies do have good pitching. How about Cole Hamels, the phillies has a new closer who claims that he is healthy and that is Brad Lidge. J.C. Romero is one of the best setup men in the national league. He was the key in their bullpen last year. It is only the first week of MLB. It is too early to make preditions. There's one thing that can affect MLB players and that is players getting hurt. I say the phillies will make the playoffs by getting the wildcard but like I said early it is early to make preditions. More arguments coming.

Let me dissect your wonderful arguments:

-"The phillies do have good pitching."- Are you kidding, besides Hamels, and maybe Kendrick? Lidge and Romero are good, but you can't use them every night, and the Phillies starters for the most part don't go further than 5 or 6 innings. So for the 7th and 8th who do you have? Chad Durbin? Clay Condrey? Ryan Madson? Tom Gordon? Come on! I'm a Phillies fan and I know better.

-"It is only the first week of MLB. It is too early to make preditions."- 2 things wrong with this. 1) It is PREDICTIONS. and 2) if it is too early to make "preditions" than how could you predict they are going to make the playoffs?

-"There's one thing that can affect MLB players and that is players getting hurt."- Good point, not the point of the TD though.

-"I say the phillies will make the playoffs by getting the wildcard but like I said early it is early to make preditions."- Ok apparently the first "predition" was not a typo. For the record you spell it P-R-E-D-I-C-T-I-O-N! *sorry I'm a grammar guy but that is not the point* Wild Card? There are way to many good teams in the NL and unless they win the division the Phils don't stand a chance.

Good Luck, Sportsman

Okay I may have spell predictions wrong, How does that affect me in this TD? Now back to this Td, I know that you are phillies fan, but don't give your hopes up because Phillies do have the offense. What are you talking about there are so many good teams in NL? Mets and Rockies are the only two good teams this year, maybe Cubs may be top 3 teams. It only the first week and anything can happen. I am a red sox fan, remember the year 2004, when the Yankees was up 3-0 in the ALCS. Everyone said that there was no way that the redsox would comeback and they did. About last year, when the Mets was up 10 games in the final month of the season and everyone said that the Mets would wrap up the division but guess what Phillies won the divison. My whole point there anything can happen. Nothing is impossiable.

Ok, sorry about pointing out the spelling mistakes. And the Rockies and Cubs from what we can tell are kind of struggling early on. Anyway I think that the Phils will have a hard time even finishing 3rd in the NL East. I know anything can happen Sportsman. I see your Red Sox. I also saw that it took us 162 games last year to be in first place by one game. So don't worry I am not losing any hope. Nothing is "impossiable" you are right. But remember had it not been for a Mets collapse, the Phils would have never made the playoffs. They don't have the depth in pitching, nor do they have the leadership/bat that Rowand provided, and they are in a tough division and league. It was great to Throwdown with you Sportsman, and you had a lot of insight, and thanks for the pep talk :).

No problem Anthony E. I know that the Phillies are in a hard division but they can still reach the playoffs. Too bad for the Mets that they choke. It was the mets fault. Still, the Phillies still has a chance to make the playoffs. It was great TD with you Anthony E.

Good Luck!

Easily vote left. The offense is really good, but they have no pitching AT ALL! Hamels was good, but do you think he can repeat those numbers in a hitter's paradise? And Brad Lidge is a good closer? You've gotta be kidding me. Way out of his prime.

Vote left. Pitching sucks, they aren't making the playoffs. Plus, so far better argument.

Way to be a Negadelphian Angelo. It's one week into the season, Myers has pitched two games, granted they were both awful, but he'll get better when he re-adjusts to being a starter again. Moyer did not pitch nearly as bad as his line inidcated-sloppy defense was, but that game was an abberation. And the Mets and Braves haven't shown anything for me to say that either of them are better than the Phillies. Outside of Santana nobody in the Mets' staff has done anything so far and thier pen was rocked yesterday. And as for Rowand, his absence is overrated, and Victorino is far better defensively, and with the way Burrell has been hitting, he can more than protect Howard.

Anthony E.....what do you think? First you say the Phillies will not make the playoffs, then you say they'll make the wildcard....make up your mind. Sport710, Phillies pitching is a joke, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. No vote either way.
