Make an MLB pitching staff using only players age 26 or younger. Include a reliever.
Players must have started the current season on their team's active roster. Based on entire career.
1. Jake Peavy, Padres (26)
2. Justin Verlander, Tigers (25)
3. Scott Kazmir, Rays (24)
4. Cole Hamels, Phillies (24)
5. Matt Cain, Giants (23)
Reliever (does not have to be a closer): Joba Chamberlain, Yankees (22)

is this whos better or who will have the better season? ill argue in my next
erwin: Back Again. said 04/07, 01:52 PM
You didn't have to use an argument for that. You could have fanmailed me.
Anyway, I'll begin. It's a pitching rotation. What do you think? I am going by the better players, where they'd fit in a stacked rotation.
Peavy, the defending NL Cy Young Award winner, is the obvious ace. He is masterful at every aspect of pitching, from ERA to strikeouts.
Verlander, at age 25, has already thrown a no-hitter. He's won 35 games in only 2 full major league seasons, has a great 3.81 ERA, and logged over 200 innings last season. He's the ace of the Tigers' staff.
Kazmir does not play for the best team, we know that. But he still managed to win 13 games last season while striking out an MLB-best 239 batters. He's fantastic, and very young.
Hamels was fantastic last season, winning 15 games with a great ERA of 3.39. He's a future ace, but my staff is so loaded, he's the 4th starter.
Cain has never played for very good teams. Because of that, he went 7-16 last year. It was not his fault, as his ERA was 3.65. For his career, he has an ERA of 3.68. He's a good fifth starter here.
You just wasted an argument on a simple question. Haha.
kingloval coffee black said 04/08, 07:40 AM
ok but i think ill only need 2 arguements to do this. im suprised that you forgot felix hernandez. i think he is a better pitcher than matt cain. he might be a good fifth starter but if u throw in king felix you get a 14-7 record with only improvement possible.
his era may have been higher but his k's were higher by a small margin. his numbers will also improve with the addition of erik bedard. he will fill in at the number 2 spot in the rotation which will be less pressure put on him.
and now that i look at it carlos zambrano(26) and fausto carmona(24) are nonexistant on ur list. zambrano had 18 wins and fausto had 19 wins so i think that hamels and kazmir are gone in my books.
fausto vs. kazmir
fausto had 19 wins a 3.06 era with 137 k's while kazmir only had 13 wins granted he had more k's but his era was .38 points higher at 3.48.
zambrano vs. hamels
zambrano had 18 wins a 3.95 era and 177 k's and that was in the midst of signing a huge contract extension which put added pressure on him. hamels is a great young pitcher who had 15 wins the same amount of k's but i think the contract year put added pressure on zambrano and i think hell have a better year this year
erwin: Back Again. said 04/08, 07:59 PM
Felix Hernandez? He really has not proven much. He is inconsistent. You'll get 7 shutout innings, then five days later, he gives up 7 runs in 3 innings. You can't trust him. Matt Cain, on the other hand, lost 16 games because he got no run support. He was great last year.
And also, give me one reason why his numbers will improve with the addition of Bedard. If anything I think it will lessen his numbers.
Fausto is good, but remember, he played for one of the AMerican League's best offenses. Kazmir, on the other hand, played for an absolutely horrible team, yet still managed to win 13 games, AND he was injured for a while. I'll take Kazmir, who'd be a Cy Young contender on any other team.
You think Zambrano will have a better year? Give me one reason why.
Hamels is an up-and-coming STUD. He gets great run support with the Phillies, but he also pitches. WELL. Hamels is younger than Zambrano, and he'll only get better. Zambrano is too inconsistent for my liking.

Peavy is awesome, but Felix is just filthy and throws harder. Plus I am a Mariners fan so I am probably biased.

Peavy, verlander, and Kazmir are all really good, and should be at the top, but i think King Felix is better than Cain or Hamels

PROBABLY biased? Though Felix has the POTENTIAL to be awesome, the guys listed are ALREADY awesome.

Carmona easily trumps Hamels. Kazmir and Zambrano are close. One is injury prone and the other inconsistent.

Hamels is better than Felix.
who has the better ERA? Hamels
who has the better WHIP? Hamels
who has the better BAA? Hamels
who has the better OBPA? Hamels
who has the better OPSA? Hamels
who has the better K/9? Hamels
so how is Felix Hernandez better than Hamels?
and Carmona does not "easily trump" Hamels.

how doesnt carmona easily trump hamels?

let's look at 2007:
ERA: advantage Carmona
WHIP: advantage Hamels
SO: advantage Hamels (in less innings)
BB: advantage Hamels (but in less innings, so we'll take that with a grain of salt)
BAA: adv. Hamels
OBPA: adv. Hamels
SLGA: adv. Carmona
OPSA: adv. Carmona
K/9: adv. Hamels
K/BB: adv. Hamels
BB/9: adv. Hamels
H/9: adv. Hamels
so let's tally it up there:
3 for Carmona and 9 for Hamels.
so you tell me how does Carmona easily trump Hamels?

This argument is all sorts of flawed. By the nature of the TD, all the players haven't proven much. And Cain lost 16 games? Every one because of run support? Doubtful.
Vote Right.

Cain was back to his usual inconsistent self Monday during his teams home opener when he couldnt locate his pitches and made the light hitting Padres look like the 27 Yankees. Vote reeight.
