Who will be a better team, the Pittsburgh Pirates or the Baltimore Orioles?

Well, everyone knows that the Baltimore Orioles have gotten off to a hot start . . .

Even with that said, the Pittsburgh Pirates will have the better record.

For starters, they are in the worst division in the MLB . . .

The Baltimore Orioles are arguably in the best division in the league . . .

Now for pure skill, the Orioles had an average pitching staff last year but the reality is that Erik Bedard, their staff ace is gone.

That leave's the O's with Jeremy Guthrie and three other guys with earned run averages of over five last season.

The Pirates have a much better rotation, they have Zack Duke who has a lot of potential even though he struggled last year but he should be better . . .

They also have Ian Snell who is one of the most underated pitchers in the league, he had an ERA of 3.76 last year. He is so good that as he gets older (now maybe), he could contend for Cy Young (well, with a waaay better offense).

But the good thing is that Pittsburgh also has a better offense than Baltimore after Baltimore lost it's best position player, Miguel Tejada.

I'll get back on that in my second argument.

I will go with the choice that a lot of people wouldn't agree with.

I gotta chose the Orioles here.

I know that we shouldn't really go off of 6 games, but the O's have played very well already this season. They have a lot of good players, and they have good pitching too.

Hitting:
Brian Roberts
Melvin Mora
Luke Scott
Adam Jones
Ramon Hernandez
Kevin Millar
Nick Markakis
Aubrey Huff

Pitching:
Jeremy Guthrie
Daniel Cabrera
Steve Trachsel
Adam Loewen
Brian Buerres

Greg Aquino
Dennis Sarfate
Jamie Walker

George Sherrill

They have a good hitting team. They have Brain Roberts, who will get on base a lot, they have Nick Markakis who is a good hitter. They have Adam Jones, who is a good young hitter, that will do well this year.

They have some good pitching. Guthrie didn't do bad last year, and he will improve with time. Cabrera should also improve this year. Loewen is a young pitcher, and will most likely get better with time.

This team is a young team. They shouldn't do extremely bad this year, and they will get better with time. I say that they will do better than the Pirates because one, the Pirates aren't good.

Ran out of room....

First of all, Brian Roberts had a career year last year and is not likely to happen again. His average, homeruns, stolen bases and on-base percentage last year were all either the best of his career ir second best . . .

. . . In other words, that year is not likely to happen again and should see a decline in numbers . . .

Jeremy Guthrie was just an average pitcher last year, only had a 3.70 ERA and didn't have that many wins or strike outs last year . . . and he is the Oriole's ace.

Everyone thought that Daniel Cabrera was going to be a future ace but all he did was pitch four below-average seasons, I'm not so hot on Adam Loewen either.

Here is a compare of Pittsburgh's top three pitchers last year and Baltimore's top three pitchers last year:

Pittsburgh:

Ian Snell - 9-12, 3.76 ERA, 7.7 K/9

Tom Gorzelanney - 14-10, 3.88 ERA, 6.0 K/9

Matt Morris - 10-11, 4.89 ERA, 4.6 K/9

Baltimore:

Jeremy Guthrie - 7-5, 3.70 ERA, 6.3 K/9

Daniel Cabrera - 9-18, 5.55 ERA, 7.3 K/9

Brian Burres - 6-8, 5.95 ERA, 7.1 K/9

Loewen only pitched six games last year, maybe a fluke? Didn't include hom because of shortened season.

Okay, 1,191 characters . . . ran out

Brian Roberts might've had a career year last year, but he is still a good player. He can hit, and he can play the field. You shouldn't expect him to do as good as last year, but you shouldn't expect him to do bad. He is a good player, who will do good this year, and will do well this year. Don't expect a career year, but don't expect a bad year. He will have a good year this year.

He isn't going to have a huge decline, maybe just a touch, but not drastic.

Guthrie was young last year, and now he has a feel for the league. He will do better this year. He will be adjusting to an ace position in the pitching staff, and he should do better in that role.

Daniel Cabrera isn't a perfect pitcher. He is average. He wil do about avergae this year, and he shouldn't have too much problems. I mean, it doesn't mean that he will do good, but he won't do absolutely terrible like last year either.

Loewen is young, and will have a full season now to prove himself. He might not be the greatest pitcher, but he shouldn't do bad. He is young, so he will just need a full season to get use to it.

The Pirates aren't a good team. Don't expect too many wins from them.

Roberts is getting older and won't be close to effective as he was last year.

Loewen pitched only six games last year so no one has any idea of how he'll do. Well, he is young and I wouldn't count on him to contribute much.

Adam Jones is still very young and I think that he will have big struggles at the MLB level. He is expected to be the second or third best offensive guy on the team and there is no way that he will live up to that.

Aubrey Huff was great - about five years ago when he hit over 30 homeruns. Now, all he will give you is a .270 average and 15 homeruns. Below average . . .

Melvin Mora is getting too old and I wouldn't expect stats much better than Huff's.

Pittsburgh has a average offense - better than the Orioles.

Freddy Sanchez is a good bet for the All-Star Game, he will hit .300 or more . . .

Jason Bay made the All-Star Games in 2006 and even though he had a bad year last year, he still belted over 20 homeruns . . .

Andy LaRoche is a good RBI guy and should get 90-100 this year . . .

Xavier Nady has gotten off to a quick start, hitting two homers in the first two games, he might hit 30 . . .

Pittsburgh's offense is much better.

Brian Roberts might be getting older, but he still has time to be a good ball player. He isn't just going to fall off the face of the earth. He is still going to be able to play well.

Adam Jones is a good player, and he can hit the ball well. He has a year out of the way already, and he has some experience, so he should be better this year. He isn't going to be the greatest player in the MLB, but he is still going to do pretty well. He will live up to the 2nd or 3rd. He is a good player and can get on base.

Aubrey Huff is a player, who is declining, but can still hit pretty well, and will give you a .285 or a little better BA. He is still going to contribute to the Orioles.

Melvin Mora is also getting old, but he is still going to be able to provide 20 HR, .285 BA.

Pittsburgh has a worse offense than the Orioles. Plus, Pittsburgh doesn't play in an easy hitters park.

Matt Morris as a top #3 pitcher on a team isn't good. He is getting old, and not going to be able to pitch as well anymore.

You can't base anything off the first week of baseball. It doesn't say anything. Nady might give ya 30 HR, but not a great BA.

Orioles are better than the Pirates.

Damn, I thought you were going to choose the Orioles. I will make the best argument that I can though.

i love the o's and think that thell do better but to be far,ill wait

Report Offensive Comment

That is fine. I just wanted some throwdowns. I will argue anyway. I can argue the Orioles pretty well.

Report Offensive Comment

Tough choice, the O's will probably start collapsing, but can I really take the Pirates?

Report Offensive Comment

Dyhard, you a converted Orioles fan now?

Report Offensive Comment

I'm not a huge fan of them, and I wouldn't say I hate them...so I like them. They are leaning towards the I like the Orioles. Top 5 favorite team, no. Top 10...yes.

Report Offensive Comment

The Orioles are about 6 or 7.

Report Offensive Comment

Its sad to see Morris as a teams top 3 pitcher.

Report Offensive Comment

The Orioles have more talent than the lowly Pirates who can't ever seem to get out of their own way. Vote to Dyhard on this one.
