The draft lottery is a joke. These owners put too much money into their franchises to have the future of their team decided by ping pong balls. The Heat, who have the worst record in the league, are dependant on the lottery for them to draft Beasely or Rose. If they were to get cheated in the lottery, it could set the franchise back another year.

Having a draft lottery also takes away parody in the NBA. If Portland gets lucky in the lottery again, they could take Rose or Beasely and be a potential Finals team while the Heat are potentially left without rose or Beasely depending on the draft lottery. There is too much money invested in these NBA teams for the draft lottery to screw them up.

The lottery may be crazy, but it is a stable and needed rule. This prevents teams from just throwing games in order to get the number one pick. With the lottery if you throw games, there isn't a guarentee you'll get the top choice.

With all of the scandals in the NBA (refs betting on games), we can never be sure if teams will try to pull some scandal just to ensure the top pick.

Plus the lottery adds excitement, an unknown outcome. The lottery is fair to all losing teams, who says the Heat deserve the #1 pick more than the T-Wolves do?? The lottery is fair to all teams, giving each a shot to get the best pick.

No one knows how the draft will turn out, so we can never say if one team gets cheated until years later (people probably thought that the Bulls would get jipped for not being able to draft Sam Bowie, but look how history is changed because the Bulls got a lower pick).

While you say that having a draft lottery will prevent tanking, teams will still tank so that they can have a better shot at winning the lottery. It is not fair to a team like Miami that the short term future of their basketball team is decided bye the draft lottery. What if the Nuggets miss the playoffs by half a game and then win the lottery? they draft Derek Rose and are most likely a top seed in the NBA this year. Now, only MInnesota or Miami gets a blue chip player. The other of these 2 teams is left without a future superstar, while the Nuggets just found the missing piece to their franchise.

The draft lottery had nothing to do with the Bulls dynasty. the BUlls scouting staff should have been good enough to see that Jordan was going to be a very good player. Somebody will get jipped this year, but most likely they will not get lucky like the Bulls did and draft a 6-time champion.

The Bulls give us an example of how we may think we are getting ripped off (with let's say the fifth pick), but we won't really know until time has progressed.

Teams may still try and tank (you are right), but the lottery ensures that maybe the (cheating) team will not get the higher pick. Miami doesn't need the draft to improve, they can still pick up a player in the draft, then go to free agency and make a pickup which will improve their franchise.

As I mentioned, the T-Wolves may deserve the first pick more, because they play in a more dominant western conference. The lottery isn't merciful because you played in a weak conference or tough conference, it is fair to all teams, because it wipes out everything except the record and let's probability do the rest..

There is no way i can win this TD. Im foreiting.

OK, I'm gonna be goin to bed, I'll try and finish this sometime in the future.

If I don't respond to your argument, it's not because I'm rude, but because my schedule will be tight tomorrow, I'm sorry.

Yeah, the lottery is necessary in sports where one player can turn a franchise around, such as basketball and hockey. In football and baseball it isn't nearly as important because even if you draft a franchise QB you need a line, receivers, etc. But in basketball, teams with no chance would tank in February if they could get a player like Oden, Durant, Lebron, so forth.

As long as Isiah Thomas is involved there will be "parody" in the NBA.

Before the lottery teams did tank, it was ugly and obvious and competitive.
Teams tank now, just not so obviously or as often and definately not competitively.

I like the lottery, of course my Blazers were able to get the #1 pick last year and that was becuase of the Lottery. I think the lottery has a chance to benefit teams that dont give up, even when the season is over. IE: Miami Heat, who quit playing ball back in December in hopes of getting the #1 pick. I would love for them to get the #3 pick and teams like the Blazers to get the #1 pick again. The Blazers are out of the playoff race and could easily throw the towel in, but they dont. Brandon Roy comes back with his sore hip and helps lead the Blazers over the Lakers who were playing for #1 seed in the tough west.
