Johnny Cueto

There are 2 rookies of the year, not one for all MLB. You are going with an easy pick based upon one start...so I'm going with Kosuke Fukudome.

Cueto has these stats:

1-0
2.02 ERA
18 Strikeouts
0 Walks

Do you know how many players have done that in there first two starts in the Modern Era?

The answer is ONE....Johnny Cueto that is amazing 18k/0bb

I hope you realize its only APRIL 9th.

Ok so Cueto has some excellent stats after TWO starts. He's also on pace for 353 strikeouts, 20 wins, and 263 innings pitched. I'm sorry, but its unlikely he comes even close to that amount of innings pitched. Let alone over 350 strikeouts.

His contract was purchased a week ago from the minor leagues. He posted a 5.03 ERA in Rookie Ball before doing well in the minor leagues. Lets give the league some time to figure the kid out.

I'm going with Fukodome, who has a body of work I can judge and who is eligible to be the rookie of the year. These numbers will come down, however he is in the top 5 in every offensive statistic in the NL except for slugging, where he ranks 9th. Leads the league in OBP. And I won't be shocked if that continues. In Japan, he was known for a keen eye at the plate. That doesnt go away overnight.

The guy steals bases, plays a solid outfield, can hit for average and moderate power (20-25 home runs) and is batting in the 5 hole for Lou Piniella, in the middle of a lineup expected to do some damage and playing under pressure to start winning NOW. Thats alot of responsibility there.

The most impressive thing about Johnny Cueto's first outing for the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday was that he shut down a good fastball-hitting team primarily with his fastball. The TV radar gun had him mostly at 94-96 mph, and almost all his pitches had good life and enough tailing action to prevent hitters from sitting on them. He started the majority of the Arizona Diamondbacks' hitters off with fastballs (14, by my count), and when he reached two strikes, he again went for his fastball more than half the time. His slider, not his changeup, was his go-to secondary pitch until the sixth inning, when he switched to his changeup, especially with two strikes, throwing nearly all changeups to Jeff Salazar, Chris Young, Chris Burke and Orlando Hudson in those counts in the final two innings he worked.

The crux of my argument is the timing we're talking about here. I was one of those blown away by his outstanding gem. Time can only tell however how he will fare. I'm glad you posted an argument here, at least.

Orlando Hudson had to ask around before the game for a scouting report on this guy. There was no advance scouting available, and the best anyone came up with is that he's a 'young Pedro'...thats quite a compliment and may very well be accurate. Good major league hitters turn on fastballs in time, and he's at the top of his game right now (he's been pitching for awhile, compared to just 2 months at the most for hitters). This might seem like I'm fishing, but he's given up a home run in both starts, and he plays in a bandbox. While he's on pace for 353 k's, he's on pace to give up 41 hr's. Neither will happen.

Lets see after his first go-around whether he stays consistent.

You didn't say anything about Fukudome. Its not often you can place a rookie with plate discipline, speed, defensive prowess, and solid power totals in the 5 hole of a lineup expected to go deep this year. He is the answer NOW for the Cubs, and is a valuable peace to Piniella's puzzle.

Get him Moondizzle!

Plenty of choices here since you didnt specify the league....I was going to throw Ellsbury into the mix as well as Longoria, except the Rays are being cheap and not promoting him.

Moondizzle

Seer better step back because Dizzle is bringing the fire.

April 9, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Haha. "Fire"...

April 9, 2008  09:38 AM ET

I like me some Cueto but, common 2 starts he cant be the only choice at this point.

April 9, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Cueto was rock solid in his debut. Nobody is going to doubt that. But its April 9th. Some teams just had their home opener. Lets be serious here. Detroit isnt going to go 0-162....despite early warning signs.

April 9, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Yeah and I just don't see the O's wont win the division.

April 9, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Gotta love Seer's well thought out argument though.

April 9, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Haha. Yea. Solid stuff. Cueto is the best pitcher ever.

April 9, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Go get some MoonDizzle....I like your pick...

April 9, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Henry Rollengartner is Rookie of the Year.

Thanks astrosfan.

April 9, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Hmmm. I step into the room....see a battered and bloody body....and moondizzle holding a bat. That about sums this TD up.

Carry on.

April 9, 2008  10:34 AM ET

Louisville Slugger...my favorite.

Cueto could be rookie of the year. Nobody knows. Its April 9th. Thats my theme here. I have to go with the guy who has a proven track record, regardless of what people think of Japanese rookies. The rules are the rules.

April 9, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Moondizzle with the Teabag!! What a beautiful thing.

April 9, 2008  10:50 AM ET

Haha...lets not get carried away. I could have inserted words like 'clam chowder' and 'bowling ball' into my argument here. Seer: lets see an argument man.

April 9, 2008  10:51 AM ET

I'm still waiting on a argument from him too.. hopefully he dont try to copy wikipedia again... lol

April 9, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Dude you have enough time to change your avatar to a picture of a fantastic hiney, but you can't finish your argument? Lets go.

April 9, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Better argument by Moondizzle thus far. Vote right unless Seer comes up with one last great argument. Fukudome is a better prospect.

April 9, 2008  11:41 AM ET

I can't stop looking at Seer's avatar. Can't....stop....looking....

That is a fantastic hiney... but not even a hiney that good can make up for your arguments.
