NBA Defensive Player of the Year

* State first then argue

-My Pick:

Marcus Camby

I'll take Shane Battier since you took the obvious one . . .

And I'll argue here . . .

Why? Because TDs have three arguments for each people and I'm not about to waste one of mine.

First of all, Marcus Camby is the man for the Denver Nuggets . . . I mean that the Nuggets can't play defense so the other team usually gets a lot of scoring oppurtunities . . .

And about half of the time, the shots miss - basic fact - and Camby scoops up those rebounds since no one else can.

Camby is leading the league in blocks and that is one of the few things he should get a ton of respect for doing . . .

I picked Shane Battier because he is a very gritty defender who usually flies under the radar for the defensive player of the year.

Battier usually guards the best player on the opponent's team - Kobe Byrant, LeBron James, - you know who I am talking about . . .

. . . and I haven't seen many high scores by those kinds of players when the play against the Houston Rockets.

Battier does most of his work outside of the paint but he still averages 5.1 rebounds per game and 1.2 blocks per game.

Camby stays near the basket and he doesn't do much when shooters are outside.

Forfeited Turn

I have to make this fast, I'll be out of here in a few minutes.

Camby gets all of the stats because no one even attempts to get a rebound, block, or anything else in that manner.

Shane Battier doesn't have the stats like Camby for two reasons:

One: He is on a very defensive team

Two: He isn't aa paint player

Battier's effort and strong D keep players out of the paint and he doesn't let them get a shot. They might get a shot but Battier always gets in his face . . .

. . . and that is something that doesn't always show up on stats.

Sorry, I have to go . . .

Battier may not play in the paint as much as Camby does but that doesn't neccessarily mean anything.
Camby is supposed to play in the paint because he is a Center, where as Battier plays Small Forward, requiring him to play more of a perimeter game.
So you are saying that because Battier does not play in the paint he shouldn't have more blocks and rebounds than Camby. You are probably right there. BUT, if Battier plays more in the perimeter, shouldn't he at least have more steals than Camby? Yes he should, and NO he doesn't!
Let's look at these stats:
Rebs:+ 8.2 - Camby
Blks:+2.5- Camby
Stls:+.1- Camby
Oh, Houston might be more of a defensive minded team than the Nuggets, but that is what makes Camby more valuable to his teams defense. Without Camby, who knows how bad the Nuggets would be in the interior. In Battier's case, removing him from a defensive minded squad might have an effect on the team, but not as much as Camby's effect for the Nuggets.
Intangibles are good for players, but in this case who wouldn't you rather take?
A center that leads the league in blocks, second in rebounds and disrupts other teams big men, also with great intangibles.
EASY!: MARCUS CAMBY!

A good perimeter defender doesn't have to rack up that many steals . . .

. . . and for not being a player who just camps out in front of the basket, Battier is fourth on his team in rebounds and second in blocks and that is with pretty much everybody on that team trying to take those stats away from him . . .

But that doesn't necassarially mean that the whole Houston Rockets team plays good defense, just good stats.

If it wasn't for Battier, Houston would be out of playoff contention, and I don't think Camby is as valuable to his team.

I would take either Carmelo Anthony or Allen Iverson over Camby any day . . .

Battier is more valuable to his team than that.

Take a look at this website:

82games.com

That has everything that you need to know for who to vote for . . .

It says in that website that every 100 posessions that Battier is on the court, the opponents only score 102.5 points on average in that span - Camby has an average of 107.0.

So, if Camby was so valuable to his team, then he would be giving up less points a night.

BRUCE BOWEN!! He should've won it already. Not a homer pick. He's just the best defender, perimeter wise, in the league. No one else guards the best player on the opposing team night in and night out. And Camby only plays help D. One on one he's not that good. Only servicable.

Raja Bell is a good pick too. Better than Camby.

You could make an argument for Chris Paul on the defensive list, as well as the MVP race.

Report Offensive Comment

MHM has a point its Chris Paul

Report Offensive Comment

Joke............. Bruce Bowen, Raja Bell, Chris Paul, Kobe, Jr Smith, Dwight Howard

*revise to my earlier post Josh smith not J.r JR couldnt win defenive player if his life depended on it, my bad

Report Offensive Comment

CP3 could pull a Hakeem and win them both in the same year... long shot though hey may have a chance at MVP but defensive player for the most part goes to the big guys down at the post it seems.

It's hard to pick Camby when he anchors such a bad defensive team. I know you cant put the blame on his shoulders, just saying its a hard decision to make. Raja is a gritty defender. Bowen's defense hasnt seemed as good this year (with a seeming increase in questionable plays) seems to eliminate him in my mind. I think Kobe takes too many plays off defensively. I can see Camby, Bell, or Dwight Howard.

Camby is the reigning Defensive POY.

SORRY! ; I DIDNT MEAN TO FORFEIT MY TURN. I HAD ORAL SURGERY TODAY (JUST FOR THE ONES THAT NEED A REASON)

Report Offensive Comment

Sometimes I wonder if Camby stand out just because he is the only one on that team that attempts to play defense.

Report Offensive Comment

Both good players and TD arguments

However

<----------------------------------------------------

Battier is on a better defensive team and Camby is the only player Denver has that consistently plays defense

Report Offensive Comment

Just because you are only one who attempts to play defense means squat

You still have to make plays and get the defensive stats

Report Offensive Comment

This guy only has one argument, one forfeit, and one wasted argument . . .

Report Offensive Comment

I would love to see Battier get love. He is really underrated. The dude brings everything to the table

Report Offensive Comment

Dikembe Mutombo.

The forfeit was NOT on purpose! You can't go on Fannation while you are on anesthesia in the Hospital!
