Roy Williams (11) or Chad Johnson (85): IF the Cowboys could get one of them, who?

I know this is all rumors and whispers, but IF the Cowboys could get one of them, (for the same price), who should they get?

I say they should pick up Roy Williams. (that means YOU pick Chad Johnson)

The guy has some of the greatest hands in the NFL, which he uses to pulll down some of the most acrobatic catches I've ever seen. He has the size to go across the middle or "post up" a defender in the end zone (6'3" 215lbs). The guy's highlight reel speaks for it'self, but since this is FanNation, I'll have to write about it.

His 40yd dash time: 4.35
His Vertical Leap: 42.5in

So not only could he run by most defenders in the NFL, he could out jump pretty much everyone in the NFL. All this makes for a great pickup, and a better pickup than Chad Johson.

This TD has been passed around like a cheap... well, use your imagination.

I'll take Chad Johnson over Roy Williams RIGHT NOW.

I capitalize "RIGHT NOW" because Johnson is more established, accomplished and has more experience. Johnson is a better guarantee of a great WR than Williams. Here's why:

Johnson has 5 consecutive Pro Bowls to Williams 1 (he was an alternate and crept in when Torry Holt was injured)
Johnson has 3 All-Pro selections to Williams 0

The age difference is 4 years so I know some people will say, "Give me the younger guy." My point is that the younger guy MAY (not a guarantee) be better in the future but RIGHT NOW if I was Dallas I would want an immediate solution, 3 - 5 year solution and guarantee that comes with Johnson.

Still not convinced? Here are there stats from last season:
Johnson - REC - 93 YDS - 1440 AVG 15.5 TDs - 8
Williams - REC - 64 YDS 838 AVG 13.1 TDs - 5

Johnson is better across the board. We can't even exam post-season stats because Williams doesn't have any. Again this goes back to my "RIGHT NOW" point. As it stands Johnson has more accomplishments, experience and better stats than Williams. What more do you need?

Well, this isn't a right now patch it up fix. This is who would you take. Chad is 4 years older. The Cowboys are trying to get younger. They already have aging WR's. Why add another to the mix. Especially one that comes with a circus side-show that Chad carries around. We already have T.O. No more room for another circus act in BigD.

I don't know how Chad is better all across the board. He's had a far better QB than Roy has ever had...and he still complains. You never hear about Roy bashing his team...and he plays for DETROIT.

Chad's stats might be better, but he's been in the league longer and played for a better team. Chad has had compliments on offense. Roy has had NO ONE until last year when they drafted Calvin Johnson. They only way to compare is to use their first 4 years in the league:

Williams:
Games Played - 55
Ctch - 245
Avg - 14.9
Yds- 3652
TDs- 28

Johnson:
Games Played - 60
Ctch - 282
Avg - 14.3
Yds - 4124
TDs - 25

So as you can see, very similar. But Chad has been fortunate to have a ProBowl QB throwing to him, not to mention a solid #2 WR.

Roy is bigger and stronger than Chad. And in the Red Zone, that's what you need. TD=W

Please don't mistake RIGHT NOW with a patch it up fix. I clearly stated that he would ensure success NOW and the next 3-5 years. That's certainly not a quick fix. Winning a Super Bowl means more money. More money means better players. Better players... and the cycle continues. Chad is the better immediate and 3 - 5 year choice for this.

Circus acts? Of course! No-one would go see a Dallas game in Dallas or on the road because they had two of the hottest players in the NFL that get so much media attention. It's a draw my friend. More so than Roy Who? NFL is a business like anything else.

Of course Chad has been in the league longer! That's precisely what I was saying. MORE experience, accomplishments, etc...

In your first argument you used 40-dash and vert leap as arguments. Sorry to say but Chad has a recorded 4.27 40-dash (an irrelevant way to judge a WR anyways) and a 40 inch vert leap (certainly comparable to Williams).

A poster eluded to this but another issue here is CONSISTENCY. Williams has been hit and miss since he stated. Only 1 season with 1000+ YDS. Only 1 seasons with a Pro Bowl alternate nod. Only 1 stand out season.

Out of space... more to come.

Okay, Johnson's vert. leap: 40in
And Williams' vert. leap: 42.5in

That's a 2.5in difference. Factor in that Williams is 2in taller and that is 4.5in. I know, simple math. But that's a big difference. The difference in making the catch and NOT making the catch.

Why is Randy Moss so dangerous in the red zone? Because he's about 6'4" and can out jump everyone with his 41.5in vertical. Wow, that is a big time leap. But Williams has a higher jump.

Why is TO so dominate? Because he's 6'3" 220lb. And he uses that frame to have his way with NFL DB's, which have an avg height is 5'11" and weight 190lb. What's Roy's frame? 6'3" 215lb. That's pretty close.

Chad might have run a 4.27 coming out of college, but he is 30 now, so I'm pretty sure he's slipped slightly. Roy is only 26, and probably still runs every bit of 4.3.

AVG DB:
Height- 5'11"
Weight- 190lbs
Vertical- 38in

CHAD:
Height- 6'1"
Weight- 190lbs
Vertical- 40in

ROY:
Height- 6'3"
Weight- 215lbs
Vertical- 42.5

Who has the bigger advantage in the NFL? Roy Williams

The Cowboys need someone to take over as the go-to guy when T.O.'s gone. Not someone who will retire a couple of years after TO.

You put a lot of emphasis on height and vert leap. These are really 2 factors in the success of a WR. Rice was 6'2, Harrison is 6'0, Alworth was 5'11, Swann was 6'0 and these are some of the best WR ever. Height is imporatn--yes--but certainly not the only factor. The numbers on the field are much more important and Johnson has Williams beat there.

You talked about the first 4 seasons. 3 out of 4 season Johnson was 1000+ YDS. Williams, just once. The one season Ocho was NOT 1000+ YDS is because he didn't start every game.

So do you want the guy who's an inch taller with a 2 inch grater vertical leap or the guy with 1000+ YDS consistently for every single year except his first year when he didn't play every game. Theory vs. practice. Johnson has better numbers and that's what you want in a "go to guy" not height, vert leap and maybes.

Look, it ultimately boils down to this:

Chad Johnson--consistent, better numbers, more accomplishments, great NOW and a guaranteed great WR.
Williams--younger, 1 inch taller, marginally better vert leap and COULD be a great WR.

I'll take Johnson with 1000+ YDS guaranteed for my team over vert leap Williams and his less YDS. That's MY go-to guy.

T.O. is on the team, so yeah. If they could get one right now.

April 10, 2008  11:28 AM ET

I don't know if Williams is faster. About the same. I think Chad ran a 4.27 40yd. I think.

williams in a heart beat... from texas, loved/loves the cowboys, no stupid shennanigans and regular teeth... no contest

April 10, 2008  11:30 AM ET

I'd take T.O. but I won't say why until right starts arguing. Don't want to fuel or influence anyone just yet.

April 10, 2008  11:39 AM ET

You'd take T.O.? He's already there.

April 10, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Woops! Meant Johnson.

April 10, 2008  11:45 AM ET

I just have T..O. on the brain.

April 10, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Don't we all. Oh wait....

April 10, 2008  11:54 AM ET

This is the third time someone has accepted it. Hahaha! But you did say you had something.

^ I did. Well, I think I do. We'll have to see how FN votes. GOOD LUCK!

This is the same Roy Williams who (in 2006) said they were SOOOO close to putting up 40 points on the board against the Seahawks....they scored 6.

He also guaranteed a win vs the Bears in 2006 and the Lions got stomped.

He may not showboat as much as Chad Johnson, but he does have a bit of a mouth.

Though, I'd take Chad in a heartbeat. The age difference does make me look harder at which to choose, but Johnson is consistent whilst Williams has only had ONE 1,000+ yard receiving season.

April 10, 2008  12:22 PM ET

Let me rephrase that, "I'd take Chad over Roy, but the age difference of the two does make me look harder at which to choose. However Johnson is far more consistent than Williams, who has only had ONE 1,000+ yard receiving season."

Much better...

April 10, 2008  12:26 PM ET

^ Your tapping in to my second argument but it's all good.

April 10, 2008  12:30 PM ET

I could probably write your second argument...

Hehe...

Ocho started 4 more games then Roy so those stats are a bit concieving FCB

I'd take Ocho CInco, We already have ONE Roy Williams, and if he doesnt work on his defense soon, he will play as stiff as the one from Detroit.
