Make an NFL offense using only players who were drafted first overall. You can use active or retired players. No offensive line. Include a starter and a backup for every position.
*Note: for the tight end position, there has only been one drafted first overall. So only use him, you don't need a backup.*
QB: John Elway
Backup: Terry Bradshaw
RB: Earl Campbell
Backup: OJ Simpson
WR: Irving Fryar
Backup: Keyshawn Johnson
TE: Billy Cannon
Good luck!
rstowe said 04/12, 09:55 AM
This was kind of limited at most positions. Especially at RB and WR...you took the 2 best at those positions so I'll do my best to pick different ones just for the sake of this TD (at least change the order)
* = Differences
QB - John Elway
Backup - Peyton Manning *
RB - Bill Dudley *
Backup - Charley Trippi *
WR: Keyshawn Johnson (couldn't find any 2 better WRs so I switched the order)
Backup: Irving Fryar
TE: Billy Cannon

First, for Peyton Manning vs. Bradshaw.
It's gotta be Bradshaw right now. Peyton Manning, at the end of his career, will overtake him, but right now it's Bradshaw. Bradshaw is a hall-of-famer and won 4 Super Bowls. At this stage of his career, Manning has better stats. But I think he won't be able to overtake Bradshaw until he wins at least one more Super Bowl.
Bill Dudley vs. Earl Campbell is good. But here's the knock against Dudley.
He played in the NFL for 9 seasons, yet he only scored 18 touchdowns and ran for just 3057 yards. Campbell passed Dudley's CAREER TOTAL for touchdowns in just one season, 1979. And he passed Dudley's rushing total in 2 seasons.
Now for Trippi vs. OJ.
Let's take the murders out of it, and focus on just their play.
OJ was the first running back ever to rush for more than 2000 yards. He also ran for 61 TDs in his career, compared to Trippi's 23. Trippi also ran for just 3506 yards, which OJ passed in one three-year span.
Fryar should be above Keyshawn. Fryar was a 5-time Pro Bowler and scored 84 career TDs. Fryar has more yards, TDs, and Pro Bowl appearances than Keyshawn Johnson.

Bradshaw v Manning - you said it best when you said at this stage of his career, Manning has better stats. I personally believe Bradshaw is highly overrated just because of the 4 rings....
I"m not going to argue the RBs....I picked 2 just to be different. My guy's can't compete numbers wise but they are in the Hall of Fame as well.
Fryar played in 4 more seasons than Keyshawn and only made 1 more pro bowl....Keyshawn averaged a pro bowl once 2.75 seasons, Fryar made it once every 3.
As for the numbers, Keyshawn played 4 less seasons but....Keyshawn is only 37 receptions, 2214 yards and 20 TDs behind Fryar....so even though Keyshawn not the same player when he retired that he was when he started, he would only have to average, 9.25 receptions, 553.5 yds and 5 TDs a season for 4 more years to tie Fryar....even an over-the-hill receiver like Keyshawn at the end of his career could of put up those numbers.

Bradshaw vs. Manning. I understand Manning does have better stats. That he does. But my question to you is: Manning has all the stats, as did Bradshaw, so why hasn't Manning gotten more out of it?
Partially because Bradshaw was surrounded by better teams. But also partially because Manning has played well all the time when it REALLY counts: the playoffs. Although he had that great run in 2006, other times he has just not been able to lead the Colts to a win when they most need it.
Take this season against the Chargers in the playoffs. Manning put up an outrageous stat line, 402 yards with 3 TDs, but also threw 2 picks, both of them crucial.
With the game on the line, Manning hasn't come through like Bradshaw did. That is really what separates them to me.
For the RBs...I commend you for giving the effort of doing something different, but no offense, I have a huge advantage.
Here is the thing. In Keyshawn's final 4 seasons, he reacked up 3235 yards. But also, he had his worst season of his career in those 4 years, a 600-yard year with Tampa. He declined so quickly. Fryar played so well in all his years. In his final 4 seasons, he had one 1000-yard year. Johnson had 0
rstowe said 04/12, 11:28 AM
The biggest problem Manning had in not doing more in the playoffs wasn't due to his play, but a lack of defense. The one year he did win the Super Bowl - what happened....his defense finally played. Bradshaw benefitted from playing on a team that had one of the greatest Ds to ever play.....all he had to do was not lose the game for the Steelers. Bradshaw through too many picks for my liking (just like Favre but without the other stuff that goes with Favre)....if Bradshaw was on any other team at the time, there is no way he makes the HOF....Manning would still have put up those numbers on any other team....
You do have the advantage at RB....I'll give you that.
Keyshawn peaked early in his career I'll give you that but I do believe if he played for 4 more years, his numbers would be better than Fryar's easily....Keyshawn's best years were better than Fryar's that is why the numbers are so close even with Keyshawn playing 4 less seasons....

I think it would have been more fair not to pick a backup especially at WR or RB....there weren't too many good ones to choose from to start so you hamstrung me with old guys for RB...I'm just saying....not complaining.

I know who those guys are. They're Hall of Famers. I just went more modern with mine. But your team is good too.

I know you do Erwin.....but the run of the mill voters won't.....I don't mind of course...I like an uphill battle.
Great idea for a TD.....never knew just how many QBs were taken 1st....

Yeah...and a ton of them didn't even pan out.
In 1936, Heisman winner Jay Berwanger was drafted and then decided not to play! I just find that funny.

Neither Rice, nor Irvin were drafted #1 overall. But they both changed the game. I think Irvin would've been right there with Rice if he wouldn't have gotten hurt.

I agree with rstowe on the Manning vs. Bradshaw debate, erwin has the RB thing won, but on the WR argument I gotta go right, if Im not mistaken Fryar had a pretty darn good QB throwing to him most of his career, what great QB's did Keyshawn have, and you are knockin him for only having a 600 yard season in Tampa? In Tampa a 600 yard season is like a 2000 yard season somewhere else for a reciever. Good TD both of you, pretty close.
