Cheezhead: Is Most Likely Gone said 04/14, 03:43 PM
I'm giving this award to the Seattle Mariner Raul Ibanez. This past week he went on a batting surge. The outfielder hit four home runs with eleven RBI. He went .370 with 27 total bases, including a triple. Ibanez also scored seven runs.
What? You don't think this is the man for the award? The argue!
ROYALwCHEESE BS CB MS 2179 66 said 04/14, 03:53 PM
Well, since this is PLAYER of the week, you picked the Offensive player of the week, but the player of the week was ChiSox pitcher. 14 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, 17 K's, an ERA 1.93, and a WHIP of .93. The best pitcher and player in the MLB this week.
More to come in the next arguments...
Cheezhead: Is Most Likely Gone said 04/14, 04:04 PM
Wait hold on. Who exactly did this? All you said was "ChiSox pitcher". Well anyway, it will be hard to argue a batter against a pitcher. And even harder when I don't even know his name. This will probably come down to a matter of opinion. It's like comparing Rodger Federer and Tiger Woods.
Anyway, those stats are nice. But Ibanez, who really isn't thought of as a big-time threat to any opposing team in my mind, really stepped up this week. Like I said it's hard to compare a batter and a pitcher, but I think four home runs, seven runs, .370 average, and 11 RBI is a bit more impressive than those stats.
ROYALwCHEESE BS CB MS 2179 66 said 04/14, 04:28 PM
Ha, sorry, of all the stats I put, I forgot to put his name, which is Javier Vazquez. And the point I would like to make is, since I know it is tough to compare pitchers and hitters, the teams these guys faced. Ibanez faced the Orioles, the Dev... the Rays, and the toughest team he face was the 7-6 Los Angeles Angels. The pitchers that he faced had records of 0-1, 1-1, 2-0, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, and 2-0, a combined record of 7-6 with a combined 7 no decisions. Javier Vazquez pitched against the Twins and struck out every batter he face except for Denard Span, Justin Morneau, and Mike lamb. He struck out Carlos Gomez and Adam Everett out twice. His other game was against "the best offense in the league who will score 1,00 runs this year", the Detroit Tigers. 0 earned runs, and 9 K's, and no walks.
Cheezhead: Is Most Likely Gone said 04/15, 04:03 PM
Ibanez did face the Orioles, but remember, they are leading the AL East. The Rays aren't much competition, I'll admit that. And the Angels, despite the record, are a very good baseball team. Sure, the pitchers he faced weren't too good, but do you expect all of them to have a good record after only two or three starts? 2-1 or 1-1 looks like a bad record, but the only thing that looks good early on is 3-0 or 2-0. So you can't really take the records that seriously.
You talk about teams and their records against Ibanez and how the best team he faced was 7-6, well Vazquez faced the Twins, who are 6-7. He also played the 3-10 Tigers. It doesn't look like Vazquez had the toughest competiton ever. In fact, it looks like Ibanez had a tougher competition:
Combined Winning % for Ibanez's opponents: 55%
Combined Winning % for Vazquez's opponents: 53%
So that really throws out your strength of schedule argument.
ROYALwCHEESE BS CB MS 2179 66 said 04/15, 07:41 PM
My mistake in my last argument. I didn't mean to imply that the Angels are a bad team. But anyway, when I said when Vazquez faced the Tigers, I did say that everyone was expecting them to have the best offensive season ever, and he comes into Detroit and blows them out. Vazquez faced hitters including Gary Sheffield (who the Tigers are struggling without), Maggloi Ordonez, and Migueal Cabrera. And for the Twins he face Morneau, and Mauer. Now, grant it, not the best lineups, but the Tigers hitters have depth as do the Twins at this moment. Let's throw the strength of schedule out, because one, that was a stupid argument by me and two, a 2% difference isn't much at all.

Oh come on, what about Ortiz? Between attempting to curse Yankee stadium and being benched he made one heck of an impact on the MLB this week :-P

Yea, Reynolds was my third pick, as weird as it may sound. I just wanted to give this TD a twist. And right after I found out I was losing, I lost another win. I hate when that happens.

striking out adam everett twice is by no means an accomplishment, i watched him squirm in the battersbox in houston for 3 or 4 years.

I understand, but I was just pointing out the batters that he struck out twice, that's it.
