Alex Rodriguez 3B

My pick, which I guess are predictions:
Cy Young: Johan Santana, Mets
MVP: David Wright, Mets
Yeah, I'm gonna have to go against my will and say the Mets.

First I will argue A-Rod vs. David Wright:
Alex Rodriguez is the reigning AL MVP from 2007. Also Rodriguez has won AL MVP 3 times, as Wright has never won an MVP award in the Major Leagues. A-Rod was the MVP last year leading the MLB in home runs with 54 and also quietly and respectably stole 24 bases. David Wright may have stole 10 more bases, but they are not as important as home runs and A-Rod had 24 more home runs than Wright. Since 2001, in 4 of the 7 years Barry Bonds has won the MVP for the NL and he did not get it for his stolen bases, he got it for his power numbers. Also in 2006, Howard won it because he was the league leader in home runs. David Wright was tied for 14th in home runs last year and a year like that just will not win you the MVP award, and i do not think Wright will have that much better of a year this year, but he will need to if he wants to be the NL MVP. Other possible candidates in the NL that will be more likely to win the MVP this year are the following:
Prince Fielder
Matt Holliday
Albert Pujols
Jimmy Rollins(has everything Wright does + more)
Hanley.
In the AL there are not many you could say would be better than A-Rod.
Wang vs. Santana next argmnt
erwin: Back Again. said 04/17, 05:11 PM
The reason Wright hasn't won an MVP yet is this:
Fiirst, he is only 25 years old and has only played 3 full seasons in the majors. Rodriguez didn't win his first MVP award until he played 8 full seasons in the majors.
"David Wright may have stole 10 more bases, but they are not as important as home runs"
Exactly what logic is behind this statement? Home runs get you runs, but stolen bases can become even more important than home runs in close, tight games. Stolen bases are important for a small-ball team such as the Mets.
"Jimmy Rollins(has everything Wright does + more"
Rollins stole 41 bases last season, and you say stolen bases aren't that important. Well then...also Rollins doesn't hit for a better average than Wright, and Wright and Rollins hit the same amount of home runs. Wright also had more RBIs than Rollins last season.
In the AL there are PLENTY. Manny, Big Papi, Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez, Vernon Wells (he's gotten off to a great start). There are just as many if not more candidates in the AL than the NL.
I guess I'll argue the pitchers next also.

Okay now I will do Wang vs Santana. First off, i would like to ask you to actually hear me out before jumping to conclusions about how you think Santana is better, but he is not. Santana and Wang have both been pitching since 2006 and Wang has had the most wins since 2006 among all pitchers. Wang has had 3 consecutive 19 game win seasons and Santana is not as consistent. Santana does have nasty stuff, I will admit but if Wang can get his sinker to bite hard and his other new pitches in his repertoire, he will be almost unstoppable, This is also the first year Santana has ever pitched in the New York, and do you know how many superstars have come to New York and not been able to produce? (i.e. Carlos Delgado). Santana is not off to a great start and it will take him a while to adjust to the pressure of the Big Apple. He also has to adjust to his new catcher which is very important that they are always on the same page. And lastly, you can't expect Santana to just arrive at a new team and win the Cy Young Award, while attempting to adjust to the new atmosphere.
erwin: Back Again. said 04/18, 10:28 PM
How exactly does Santana have to adjust? He played in the AL with the Twins, the hitters' league. Now he's in the National League with the Mets, a league with more pitching. It should only get EASIER for Santana now.
Santana is better than Wang. And Santana has been pitching longer than Wang. He didn't start in 2006. I'll show the stats. They're last season's.
Santana
ERA: 3.33 (career high as starter)
W: 15
L: 13
K: 235
WHIP: 1.07
Wang
ERA: 3.70
W: 19
L: 7
K: 104
WHIP: 1.08
The only reason Wang had more wins is because Santana played on a horrible team and got NO run support at all. He still pitched very well. Wang could give up 5 runs in 5 innings and still win.
Wang has had 3 consecutive 19-win seasons? Where the hell did you get that from? He's only had 2.
2005: 8
2006: 19
2007: 19
And anyways, that doesn't even beat Santana's career best, 20 wins.
I don't know how you can say Santana is not as consistent. He has pitched very well this year despite his record. He has only an ERA around 3 and hasn't gotten a ton of support. I have no doubt that he'll bounce back.
Santana has a better chance to win the Cy Young than Wang.

Is this by the current season's stats, or last season's?

I think that it would be David Wright and Johan Santana or Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander.
I think that the Verlander-Cabrera combo would be the best though

Although I think Webb and Peavy will win it before Santana, I really think Wright has the better chance to win.

If not Santana/Wright, maybe Hamels/Utley...I mean they gave Howard and Rollins the MVPs, and Utley was the supposed frontrunner in 2007 before he got hurt...

You could still add Manny/Beckett if you want to. I can see that, although I wouldn't like to.

I really don't like how the Cy Young is mainly based on wins since I don't think its an accurate way to measure pitchers, but Cy Youngs are usually the 20 game winners. Wang, with his run support, has a realistic shot at 23.
And A-rod, well, hes just A-rod.

Wang won't realistically have a chance at the Cy Young and David Wright has a decent chance as MVP.
