Packers to retire Favre's Jersey in Opening Game. Too early?

The Packers have planned to ceremoniously retire their fabled QB's jersey at halftime of their home opener vs. the Vikings. This will be a mere eight months after his final snap, and many players wait a year or two (or in Joe Montana's case, five) until their number is immortalized. So, is this too early? I say no.

Favre was the best QB in the history of Titletown. He didn't win as many titles as Starr (who waited two years), but he was superbly more talented and did bring the Lombardi trophy home. He is the all time leader in just about every significant statistical QB area, and spent his entire starting career in Green Bay. There is no question his jersey will eventually be retired, so why wait?

If anyone disagrees and think Favre's number should be available for a while, take this TD.

They should wait at least until midseason to retire Favre's number, possibly until the 2009-2010 season. They should do this for two reasons, 1) What if Favre wants to come back and 2) It seems as if the Packers organization is just trying to get rid of a man who has been the face of the team.

Say Favre, after a couple games, decides that he wants to come back and play a couple more years. Where does that leave the team, as well as Favre. I suppose that they could un-retire the number 4 for him, but that would take away from the splendor of having it retired. Or they could leave it retired, and strip Favre of his number. Nobody would know that it was Favre running around the field without the big 4 on his jersey.

The Packers seem to not want option number 1 to happen, so I give you option 2. The Packers don't want Favre back (I hear Packers fans cursing me). They want to respect him by retiring his number, but they need to do it quick so that he can't comeback midway through the season and ruin what they're trying to build with Rodgers. They need Favre to completely retire, with no hope of returning. He's not doing it, so they need to do it for him by retiring his number ASAP

No reason to wait and no better way to start the season. If Rodgers struggles than you have to put that over his head on top of everything else. Opening day on a nationally televised game seems to fit right.

Retiring your number has no bearing on whether or not a player can come back. All that hoopla is just writers trying to drum up a story.

Wonder when this will officially be tallied as a win. It's my 200th.
