Eugenio Velez of the San Francisco Giants is the next Hanley Ramirez. This kid is good, real good, and he plays a lot like Hanley Ramirez. He is not off to a quick start this year, but he will come back to hit around .280, and he can steal bases easily, and may steal 30 or more this year. He's a young stud with great potential and he is going to develop into a great player very soon

First off, Velez is a 2nd baseman so I dont know how he could be the next Hanley Ramirez when Hanley plays SS. With that in mind, I am guessing that you just mean who will be the next player to come up and be great right away and play like Ramirez?

My pick is Jacoby Ellsbury of the Boston Redsox. He is in the middle of his rookie season right now and most people have him or Longoria as their AL ROY. He is currently batting .230 (Velez-.235) with 1 homerun, 6 RBI, 12 R, and 4 SB. He is one of the fastest in the league while at the same time, drives in runs along with hitting the long ball. Last year he had 3 HRs in 33 ABs... a homerun in every 11 at bats. Albert Pujols hit one every 16 ABs.

I have a few problems with your pick. Velez does not even start, only has 3 runs and 4 rbis, he also only has 2 steals. You told me in your arguement that he would get 30+ stolen bases THIS YEAR.. that is nearly impossible when he rarely starts. The same way with AVG. You said .280? That means nothing if he only gets 200 at bats! Unlike Velez, Ellsbury DOES start and IS good, real good.

OK, I am sorry but you have a huge flaw in your arguments and it is your whole point. You say Ellsbury starts, and Velez doesn't, let's just look at the stats. YOU ARE COMPLETELY WRONG THERE!! Ellsbury has failed to start 5 times this year having 0 at bats. All together Ellsbury has 39 at bats this season. Velez actually has 51at bats in one less games, so i think ypu had your stats backwards there. The last time Velez was in the minors he hit 14 home runs, 90 RBI's with a batting average of .315. HE also compiled 64 stolen bases, all in 126 games. YOU ARE TELING ME THAT IS NOT THE REAL DEAL? In Ellsbury's 87 game career in AAA, he had 2 home runs, 28 RBI's hitting with a batting average of .298, and with 33 stolen bases. Velez's minor league stats are much stronger, and the only thing that tells you Ellsbury will better is because he got called up late last year, and had some pretty good games. And by the way, ESPN.com is what told me that Velez was going to steal and 30+ bases this year, and just look at his speed, he is just as fast as Ellsbury, so thats it.

Ok buddy, you need to be brought back to earth a little bit on this one. Check it out:

http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/team/depth_chart/index.jsp?c_id=sf

Velez is the 2nd string secondbaseman.. HE DOES NOT START!!! I dont know how much more hardcore facts I need to convince you that he doesnt start. Did Velez brainwash you or something because he most certainly does not start. Now lets see if Ellsbury starts:

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/team/depth_chart/index.jsp?c_id=bos

Oh my goodness, he DOES! Wow, looks like I am right again.

Ellsbury is the real deal and I think everyone knows that.. He has better power, speed, fielding, batting, etc. than Velez does. Velez had a good 2007 AAA season.. big deal, so did Ellsbury. The switch from AAA to the majors is huge and there are tons of players that have great AAA careers but never do well in the majors and so far, Jacoby is blowing Velez away in their major league careers:

Ellsbury vs Velez
AVG- .323 vs .242
R- 33 vs 8
H- 50 vs 15
HR- 4 vs 0
RBI- 24 vs 6
SB- 13 vs 6
OBP- .400 vs .288
SLG- .477 vs .419

Yes, Jacoby blows him away in EVERY major stat category. Check THOSE stats, esse.

all i needed to say has been said, if ellsbury starts and velez does not then tell me why he has 12 more AB's, and Velez has started the past 6 games...

I cant really argue that kind of arguement except to say that I have stated my points. In this kind of TD, you basically have a better shot at winning with picking a no-name guy in AA than to pick a proven ROY candidate and I think that is wrong. Ellsbury is far better than Velez, the numbers prove it and I think it is funny the way that you dont have an arguement now that I have placed hardcore evidence that Ellsbury is far better out on the table..

Ellsbury showed off all his skills in limited appearences in Boston last season, and now the Red Sox finally have made room for him to play full-time and he has proven that he IS a big league OFer. He has all the skills you look for in center field and at the top of the batting order, and he knows exactly how to make use of his outstanding speed.

There are a few players you could pick here that are going to be great.. Ellsbury, Upton, Rasmus, Maybin being some of them but I just dont think that Velez is in that group..

Ellsbury is #10
Velez is N/A

Either SP Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers, OF Cameron Maybin of the Florida Marlins or 3B Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays

Ellsbury isn't really the next big thing, since he is all the rave already. His post season heroics, and antics late last year when he was called up has already built himself a name. The dude on the left picked a guy nobody has really heard of... u picked a guy EVERYONE has heard of. Vote to the left, pending arguments

April 20, 2008  12:20 AM ET

hey batman, that makes no sence

April 20, 2008  12:24 AM ET

I think he was meaning me to pick someone like Hanley Ramirez (aka all-around)... that is why I didnt pick Evan Longoria. Justin Upton.. forgot about him.

Batman, him picking a guy that nobody has heard of should go against him. EVERYONE has heard of Jacoby because he is GOOD. His guy doesnt even start and he says that he is gonna get 30+ steals?

April 20, 2008  12:26 AM ET

To me its the same thing as picking Jordan as the best #23. See Cubs fan in the above comments. THOSE would be acceptable candidates because they havent had a shot yet, and are technically "nobodies" since they don't have a starting job. You even say so yourself : "who will be great right away" Ellsbury was already great.

April 20, 2008  12:29 AM ET

4 things here

1. vote to Skip
2. ellsbury will be 3x better than velez will ever be
3. how can he have that great of numbers when, to my knowledge, he does not start?
4. fvkasm2x needs to rethink things

April 20, 2008  12:31 AM ET

vote right. velez? are you serious? your "description" of velez sounds exactly what ellsbury's is and what velez's isnt.

April 20, 2008  01:17 AM ET

Hello Fannation... i understand Ellsbury is much better than Velez. If this was my TD, i would agree with CUBS above, and picked Longoria. The point of this TD in my opinion, is to pick a "random nobody", who will have a great career. The object is to pick a draft type guy, or a guy in the minors who could come up and be big. Ellsbury has already done that, so to pick him is silly in my books. Its like picking Braun, Hardy, Dice K or Joba Chamberlain. Not really the same thing as the challenge put forth.

April 20, 2008  01:36 AM ET

Batman, do you wanna know what Braun/Hardy/DiceK/Joba and Ellsbury DONT have in common? ELLSBURY IS A ROOKIE!!!!!!!!! You are missing the point entirely. Longoria doesnt have the speed that Ramirez has..

April 20, 2008  01:58 AM ET

I'm thinking Upton...

April 20, 2008  01:59 AM ET

Actually, Joba is also a rookie

Buccholz, Ellsbury, Fukudome, Joba, etc.... all poor picks. Sure they are rookies, but are they really?

Great_1, explain to me why Ellsbury isnt a "real" rookie? I am a little lost on that one.

Right now I have to vote to the left. That can change though.

April 20, 2008  12:24 PM ET

^I meant right

April 20, 2008  12:54 PM ET

can u not see the arguments? because just look at the numbers i showed, velez seems as if he is better to me, cuz he has better #'s

April 20, 2008  03:19 PM ET

just look at the numbers that I showed... Velez DOES NOT have better numbers and, sadly, you refuse to beleive that.

oh, yeah, i forgot.... Ellsbury is on pace to get 36 SBs and Velez is on pace for 17.

April 20, 2008  08:05 PM ET

this shouldnt be close... i have far better arguements and a way better pick... but i aint complaining
